View Full Version : Tried 3D Changes - Museum CTD

I tried to view the minor changes I made earlier to the Transport in the museum, but the game crashed.

Here is what I did.

1. I eliminated small parts of the superstructure using the 'tweak' button in wings3d, and then moving the polys. I have the feeling this is where I went wrong - I am a novice to 3d editing after all.

2. I exported the new model as a .obj file.

3. I opened the correct .dat with pack3d, and replaced the file for the hull with the new one. It appeared to work fine.

4. I added the folder to the correct directory (it had the same name as the unedited clone which I already had successfully tested, so all the right entries were already there).

5. I started the game and went into the museum - and the game crashed.

Can someone please point out where I went wrong? It's probably something obvious. :shifty:

Did you ever use the "extrude" function? No model altered with this function has ever worked for me.

I couldn't even find it. What do you use to change your models?

I increase and decrease the scale of objects, for the most part. I also select deckhouses, funnels, etc and move them from their original positions. Very occasionally I will alter the actual shape of individual parts.

If I was to eliminate a small piece of superstructure that was attached to the main model, what would be the best way to delete it? I can't move it as it's part of the ship itself. Or have we not arrived at this stage in modeling yet?

BTW - did you say earlier that there was a way to view the whole ship, including all of its different objects (separate 3d parts)?

What you can do is select the deckhouse or whatever you need to move by holding down the lmb and dragging a "box" over it, just like in a graphic editing program like photoshop. Then let go; the stuff you want to move should be highlighted in red. Then, right click. A menu should appear, and select the "move" option. You shold be able to move the selected items together along axes "X", "Y", and "Z".

To my knowledge there's no way to view all items simultaneously in 3d, other than by opening them together in Wings3d one by one.

It worked this time. Of course, my first changes were not perfect - I left a big opening in the ship - she looked like the burned-out Noronic filled with water and with the top of the superstructure gone. :D It worked though, and I'll continue my work.

Did you get the graphic error (deck skin on the hull?) I'm desperate for a way to solve this.

BTW, it's interesting you brought up the "Noronic". I'll have to research that wreck some more, since all I've read about her were some short mentions in disaster/shipwreck books.

:( Yeah...minor texture problems. The funnel textures seems to be appearing on the deck in a couple of places.

I successfully moved some pieces of superstructure - I think I am catching on pretty well, but when I lowered part of the superstructure, I left a couple of spaces through which you can see the water if you look at the ship from overhead. I can fix that though with practice. Within a week, I expect to have something slightly presentable - two things I am concerned about though, are deleting the many vents which are found along the top deck and lowering a very large part of the superstructure. Lowering the superstructure will just take a lot of practice - but I have heard that deleting objects is impossible, and they can only be replaced. What would happen if I opened a vent (in the program that is :88)) deleted it, and imported an empty file? Would that work?

It's working alright now except for the texture problems, and those aren't terribly serious. I will probably proceed anyway for now.

I hope to complete 3 ships from the Transport - a 7,000 ton freighter, a 6,000 ton ammunition freighter, and a 6,900 ton tanker. I have two more assignments to complete right now though, so I don't have as much time as I'd like. I'll try to do some more later tomorrow.

I hope someone works out a solution for the texture issue.
