What are your all time favourite games/sims? You know, the ones that are so in-depth and consuming that you just can't bring yourself to uninstall them, and they sit there for years on your drive to be played when all else is boring, or get automatically installed everytime you reload your OS?

My favourites:
X2: the Threat(Soon to be X3)
CivIII(soon to be Civ4)
Silent Hunter III
Daggerfall
Morrowind(Mostly because I don't want to have to re-install all the mods)
FS2004
Operation Flashpoint: Resistance

There are a few others I would still have if I had DosBox:

wetwarev7: I almost started this thread several times...I see by the response I should have!

Games I loved but no longer play:
M1 Tank Platoon
Silent Hunter 1
D-Day America Invades
Aces of the Deep
Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe
Greant Naval Battles of the North Atlantic, 39-43
Carrier Strike
X-Wing

If anyone knows how to get these old DOS based games to run on my P4, please let me know!!!!

Games I love and still play:
Silent Hunter 3
B17 2: The Mighty 8th (would have been GREAT with multiplayer)
Pacific Fighters
IL2, Forgotten Battles
Call of Duty
Fighting Steel
Sea Dogs
Madden 2003
NASCAR Racing 2003
Empire Earth
KOTOR 1 & 2

And if any of you ever wanted to be GM of ANY hockey team in ANY league in the world, get NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2005 from Sega. It's pretty much just a GM sim (with some coaching thrown in - no moving around the ice checking, shooting, etc), but the depth is unreal...

Von Scheerbach: DosBox is the way to go for getting old games running again. It's pretty easy to use, you'll have to do a little reading but not much.

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1

Main problem with it is that it's pretty resource intensive. If you're running a "newer" DOS game it may not run very well, but most games it runs fine.

My top 15 (in descending order)

1. Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe
2. Silent Hunter III
3. Red Baron 3d (heavily modded)
4. Aces of the Deep
5. Their Finest Hour
6. Cutthroats: Terror on the High Seas
7. Pirates of the Caribbean (heavily modded)
8. Freelancer (heavily modded)
9. Falcon 3.0 ("Major Iambecomelife was courtmartialed for aiding and abetting the enemy...") Dang - right after I beat the Red Baron's kill count :damn: .
10. Resident Evil 3
11. Silent Hill 2
12. Return to Castle Wolfenstein
13. Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory (the only MP game I play)
14. Morrowind ("You are a fool to walk around like that :rotfl: ")
15. Resident Evil 2

The IL2 series almost makes it but loses out because of mediocre immersion & campaign play. SH2 loses out because it was relatively poor out of the box. I think SH3 is the best modern
game both default and with mods. RB3d is a close second with the "Full Canvas Jacket" mod. If only I could get some decent FPS with it...

My CD was stolen several years ago. I had it in the box that my Radeon 9600 came in and someone made off with it, expecting to get a shiny new graphics card. At least they were disappointed when they opened the box  . I haven't bought a new copy yet.

I still play the X-com series, and Medieval(and Rome) Total War.

I've noticed that the DosBox program has some problems with WinXp(mostly graphics) and some games, so I've got a slower Win98 machine for those games like X-com, Daggerfall, Elite, etc....

I played Halflife2 all the way thru, enjoyed it, then removed it. Takes too much space, and just doesn't have the same replay value as open ended games. same with Doom3. I'll play them again, will never sell them, but they just don't rate the disk space they use.

Lately, I've gotten back into Muds....I spend a lot of time at Discworld.

Wow, how could I forget Medieval Total War. That is a great game.

Not to mention the oldies but goody X-COM.

I found a game which is basically a rip off of X-COM called UFO Aftermath. I had to buy it to get my X-COM fix since I've long lost any copies of the original. It was worth the 30 bucks. :)

Yeah, the eye candy is obviously much better. It plays mostly like X-COM. I've wasted may an hour glued to my computer screen whacking mutations and "Greys" (that's their little pet word for aliens).

If you liked X-COM you'll like this. I heard that they might be coming out with a new X-COM. I forgot the company who originally produced it but if you do a search you'll probably find info on it.

Great thread, it's a trip down memory lane. I remember my first (and only other) Sub Sim which was Silent Service and I played it on my Commodore 64!!! :) Ahhhh, happy days. I remember thinking: "These graphics are amazing!!!" :)

Can you imagine, 30 years from now, our children will be trying out something like Half-life2, or Doom3 for history class, and would consider the graphics "quaint"?

WARBIRDS - before they killed the lower realism mode. I was even a Squadron commander at one time ("The Drifters, Guns for hire") with about 30 members. Was always an awesome time when we got together!

#2's
DIABLO II - spent way too much time on this. had 48 characters, all level 80 or above, with 6 level 99's. Sold the acounts on eBay :)

SH III - Mostly because I'm playing it now... but probably won't remain. Fun, but not THAT fun. Maybe if they had better multi-player options, including a "no friendly fire" option that would prevent hack weenies from causing damage (or better yet, have any damage that would have been assessed, be assessed to the shooters sub and not yours).

Other notable:
REAL WAR - fun, and a bit challenging, but not an all-time favorite. I think there's a newer version out there (something like CIV 4, but with tanks and such -- if you know of the game I speask, please PM me) I seem to recall something on the G4 channel that reviewed this game - but I forgot the name :damn: maybe Age of Empires III ?? :hmm: I'm not sure how far that game goes.

The whole time I was playing Civ4, I was gearing my entire civilization towards building a submarine fleet when they became available... :rotfl: :rotfl:

I just finished F.E.A.R a first person shooter with a kind of horror theme to it.

The AI enemy is the best ive seen in a shooting game. I mean these guys run, duck you throw a grenade they're throw one back they even do the getto style with gun outstretched one arm style moving back while firing. They will flank you find other ways of getting to you, if you run they're follow, you hide they're find you and they call for reinforcements.

What i found to be a bit of a bore was to much corridor fighting. Still a good shooter for its realism fighting.

In order of their total domination of my free time and absolute coolness:

1. X-COM -UFO Defence (1994)
2. IL-2 / FB / PF
3. Close Combat series (all of them)
4. SHIII
5. Op Flashpoint + all addons ( Still the most realistic land combat game ever, total freedom of maneuver).
6. Microprose PAW / then EAW
7. M1 Tank Platoon II
8. Microprose GUNSHIP! ( I dug it even though it was nearly impossibly hard to play).
9. Far Cry ( I think it spanks HL2, dont know why but I just love the
weapons, AI, and free range openess of this game.)
10. Grand Theft Auto III and up.

And for Multiplayer, hands down BF1942 and BFII, though Joint OPS if cool too.

And as for games I think are/were highly overated:

1. Call of Duty (It just does nothing for me, way to much action at once and feels like its on rails (no freedom of maneuver).
2. Anything from ROWAN (BOB, Korea, all of them)
3. Every sub sim before SHIII except for AOD. ( I'm talking WWII sims not modern).
4. Microsofts CFS series.
5. LOMAC (I guess modern combat sims are to hard for me when the HUD and instruments are in Russian.

I like to play:
1.Silent Hunter series(I could run SH1 in my pc recently with D-Fend!)
2.Teitoku no Ketsudan series by Koei(this is a simulation game based on the Pacific war; you are playing as the Commander in Chief of Japan or US, and form and command your fleet or give orders to bases you occupied.... your story will be unfolded on the Pacific.)

My Top 10 PC games of all time in no particular order:

1) Myth: The Fallen Lords ---- made by Bungie studios before Microsoft bought them because they wanted Bungie's next game, Halo, to be an Xbox launch title. Myth was the first ever true 3d squad level real time tactical game and it was a masterpiece in every way, both single player and multi-player.

2) All the Infinity Engine Role-playing games (too hard to pick just one.) Planescape, Baldur's Gate I and II, Icewind Dale I and II. No fantasy RPGs have ever come close to these games in pure fantasy roleplaying, story and tactical level strategy gaming excellence.

3) Medal of Honor: Allied Assualt ---- The D-Day Normandy invasion level will go down in history as one of the greatest, most immersive, cinematic, teeth clenching game levels in gaming ever created. Multi-player was top notch as well. Many of the designers left Electonic Arts and formed Infinity Ward which created Call of Duty1 and 2.

4) SHIII ---- I won't preach to the choir except to say that few games have ever matched the simulation experience, graphics, depth of gameplay, realism, replayability and devoted mod community as this game embodies.

5) Everquest ---- Nothing can compare to the experience of entering this living, persistent, 3D gameworld for the first time. A truly mesmerizing experience. No game has ever replicated the absolute fear, awe, and joy in exploring a virtual world than this one.

6) Half-Life 2 ---- The best ever FPS game ever made.

7) Farcry ---- The other best FPS game ever made.

8) Vampire: The Masquerade ---- One of the most underated games ever. For pure immersiveness, roleplaying and adult oriented open ended fun, this game is a must have.

9) Zork I ---- text based adventure game that did more to create a generation of PC gamers than probably any game ever has.

10) You Don't Know Jack I and II (and others) ---- A brilliant series of irrverant trivia games that have generated more laughs, good hearted competition and pure fun in my home than any other compliation of bits and bytes to be sketched into my hard drive.
