View Full Version : Periscope Height ?
Hi there.
I have been playing around with some of the vaules in the game just to see what they do.
One easy thing which I managed to do is change the persicope depth for a sub.
I would now like to know how to change the height of the periscope itself - because its not very useful being at a periscope depth at 25 metres when the periscope doesnt even break the surface.
Any ideas ?

S! and Welcome sir...
there is a "decks awash" mod that does some work regarding a historical basis.
Welcome to your new addiction... fixing stuff!!! Hang out here and you will learn 1001 ways.

I am not certain of this, but the correct periscope depth for a u-boot is 12 meters, not 25. Therefore the correct height of the periscope corresponds to this depth. trying to break the the surface with the scope at 25 m depth would possibly have snapped the scope( that would have been extended over 75 feet!)

I think Pgreen has some misconceptions of periscope depth. It would seem as he has set it... he cannot fully surface. :-?
The good thing is that he has learned to modify files... a little bit. :-j

How did you do that? I want to change depth for snorchel depth. Must be in the same file!
I know this is historically very inaccurate - I just wanted to see if I could edit the settings.
Basically what i have done is gone into the cfg file of the VIIC and changed the periscope depth from about 12 to 25. I wanted to see if the model would take this figure into consideration and adjust the periscope "pipe" accordingly - allowing you to use the periscope from the a greater depth
As it stands - when I order periscope depth from the surface - the sub duly dives to 25m but when I extend the periscope - it doesn't break the waters surface.
I guess if i was to change the schnorkel depth - i would get the same results - possibly even a flooded engine room :)
So basically I need to find another value somewhere which would adjust the length of "pipe"

The pipe length will not change unless we get the software development kit (which Ubi has very rudely decided to not release).
But why in the world would you want to use your periscope at 25 meters? What is so wrong with using it at 12 meters???

Theres nothing wrong with the 12meters and I wouldnt want to use the scope at any other depth - i just wanted to see if the changes I made had any effect.

Therefore... it was your first successful attempt at modifying an in-game aspect of play?
Congrats! It can be scary to go messing about with files when you have little... or even a lot... of experience! The first step is always the hardest on a journey of a thousand miles.
SALUTE! Pgreen
PS: I recommend multiple installations of SH3... one to be left totally alone with the exception of patching to 1.4b. Rename that installation to "DON'T TOUCH ME" and use it as a backup file that can be copied repeatedly/ as necessary.

Yep, I always make sure I can revert to the originals when I'm doing my career

To extend the scope from a 25m Depth would require a NEW scope model that was LONG enough to break the surface. The reason It WONT is because the game knows how long the scope is, and how far it can extend it. IF you did indeed have a scope long enough to do the above, you would sadly find out that when it was lowered, you would have nearly 10m of scope sticking out the BOTTOM of you sub. This besides just looking plain silly, would make diving in shallow water a tad difficult. :)
