Not quite correct, uboat.net have that info although not in a table format, at least not on the free part of the site.
But they have it listed here under the diffrent classes.

Quite uncommon.

? Cutters (they patroled the US coasts, but looking at the reports U-boats must have only sink a handfull)

That is 73 small ships. That is 0.063 small warship per U-boat. 175 ships between 500 and 2000 tons got shot at and hit by U-boats.

It would seem that it was common practice not to engage small warships.

Not quite. There were quite a lot of attacks against warships especially earlier in the war e.g. during the Norwegian campaign.

Unfortunately torpedo problems were so dire that the RN escaped many times. If torpedoes had been working correctly, half the British fleet would have been sunk around Norway and the North Sea.

Irishreds radiolog contains a lot of these sort of reports and information, it's quite interesting.

Also, in 1941/2 (I think) BdU issued orders that convoy escorts be engaged as priority targets, which is interesting.

I think in early days of war there were special orders by the ger navy .till 42 there was the order only to attack if u must to. Remember the Bismark she crippelt the PoW to a point where only one of the ten main guns was working and than left to go for merchant man cause the commanding admiral didn t want to waste the ammu on a battleship.
