View Full Version : To: Florin Boitor and the Dev Team
Quote from the SH111 web site about harbour editing:-
"In addition, as a welcome bonus, we intend to make the max source file including the tile kit available for the community. You will be able to improve it, expand it and update it (poly count, landmark buildings, new port locations, etc.). Practically, the kit will never fall into obsolescence as long as there will be a Silent Hunter III community."
Question:- Will this ever be made available?

Didn't you all see the word "intend" ???
Wonder why this should be a sticky. SHIII dev-team does not excist at the moment, and the person you are directly adressing is not with UBI, so who is this message adressed to ? ;)
Drebbel
I did not make this a sticky. I did not ask for it to be made a sticky. Presumably one of the moderators of this forum decided to make it visible to the non-existant development team as long as possible.
I wrote it in the hope that the people who developed the product that we use, from time to time look at this forum and take notice of what people had expected from statements made on their website.
Obviously they do not look at this forum.
Therefore why doesn't someone "unsticky" it!
Obviously you are in the "know" as to who develops what so perhaps you could contact the original developers and get a definitive answer to the numerous questions about non-delivery of what was promised? ;) ;) ;)

MLF,
It has been posted several times by myself, I quote "Production has no plans to create a public SDK in the near future"... note the wording, 'Production' not the Dev Team. The Dev Team are/were only employees. As employees of Ubisoft, they do not have the authority or legal right to release the SDK etc.
I know that the Dev Team would have said it in good faith and on the understanding that this was Ubisoft's intentions.
Now with regards to the non-existent Dev Team... now that is not very nice and surely if you were paying attention, you would have noticed how much help they do provide to the community, in their own free time. Do they look at the forum? I don't know. All I can say on that one is that I see it as a Ubisoft corporate decision, so Ubisoft should. Indirectly they have through me.
The original developer was Ubisoft, the Dev Team were employees. The original developer says " "Production has no plans to create a public SDK in the near future"...
Now back to SHIV beta... oops, did I just say that, uhm, forget you just heard that, no don't repeat it... just forget, yes that’s it :rotfl:

ANy one knows those where intensions, never rock hard garanteed features of the game. Even in your quote it states "we intend to make the ".
And the whole sub community had the chance to ask such questions to Florin himself during the last Intercontinental Subsim&Subclub Meeting. We all got a very satisfactory answer. :D

ANY one also knows that it is not a nice thing to make promises if it does not entirely depend on you to fulfill them. Especially when it can be considered as an advertising thing to make people buy more copies of the game.

So you mean that before a release is made a dev-team should not talk about their plans at all ????

You mean like an architect talks about plans to built a nice building complex at some spot in the city so that people will invest in stocks of his firm while it is only up to the mayor to decide on having f.e. a car parking place on the very same spot.

Think you are being unfair on this. I don't want this kind of discussion at all. So you have to discuss with yourself on this one captain.

Nobody forced the Devs to promise anything. At least it was not me. :)

Fine with me. I did not start this. I just expressed my opinion as well as you expressed yours.
Thanks for your input Sergei, and yours Der Teddy. I did not want to start a community argument. However, I must agree with Sergei in that if an intention contributes to sales then that intention should be met.
I understand that the developers are employees. Maybe I should have addressed to to Ubisoft but I thought.... well..... oh what the hell. Its still a good sim but it would have been nice to make the ports reflect the real thing a bit more :(
I would suggest the moderators unstick this before it blows up out of all proportion.

the thing that bugs me is, that if ubi has no intention in finishing the game, eg expansion pack, or doing a sh4, then why are they keeping it?

Maybe the SDK does not belong to them?
I'm leaning towards that theory because one day, I was googling online for some texture images and came across many that were already being used by SH3. Maybe the devs thought that they were sly enough to rip copywrited textures from various online sources, but not sly enough to steal an entire SDK...
Just FYI - ogg vorbis is also a third party designer, of which SH3 has legally contacted about using their technology.
