Izarc is also good for those .rar files. http://www.izarc.org/download.html
I'm a SHIII noob, so not quite ready for RUb 1.44. RUb aside, the Increased harbor traffic mod (standalone version) seems essential to me. Going in and out of the harbor is so cool now I never do it in time compression any more.

The improved smoke mod (I'm using the one that comes with Improved U-boat) seems pretty essential as well.
I'm also using the "Crew Vitamins" mod because it seems unrealistic to me that the crew would poop out after just a few hours of duty.
The many, many graphics mods are good too ... just added a sub skin (paint job, that is) for my latest patrol...
Have fun!

Not to mention the sound when diving.... pretty cool!
If the RUb mod dosen't cover it (or if you choose not to use it) the crew uniforms mod is pleasing to the eye, I can't imagine my SHIII without it. The gramaphone add-ons add alot of atmosphere to the sim IMO (available from U-boot.realsimulations)
here's what I use and recommend for playing @100% :)

Habrour Traffic by Rubini is an essential addition too. There`s also a series of mods by Pascal (Ocean Foam, Smoke and Splash) that greatly enhance the visual experience

err, what on earth is the swastika mod? :o
Well, I am obviously biased, but you could always try the Improved U-Boat mod, available at http://u-boot.realsimulation.com which integrates all the best mods including RuB.
I'll be releasing a new version in a couple of days, mind.

I use this mod too .... all it does is put the nazi symbol ( swastika ) on the flags on friendly ships from what I can see.. gives the ships a more realistic look .....

The only true essentials are the game itself and the 1.4b patch.
RUB takes several good realism mods and incorporates them into one easy package.
Rubini's Harbour Traffic Mod adds life to the harbors. Ships and U-boats coming and going. RUB contains a lite version of this.
SHIII Commander gives your captain a career outside of the U-boat, and contains thousands of names so your crew don't always look the same. It also keeps track of your career(s) and makes it feel real.
Everything else is essential only for immersion and feel.
Any of the sound mods adds better sounds, and the speech mods mostly replace in-game voices with scenes from Das Boot. Of course I like mine the best.
Same with the graphics mods. There are a lot of good ones out there. AIL's mods are all good.
I'm particularly fond of the Radiolog Mod. It gives you hundreds of messages, from important directives to seemingly random distress signals. If you don't like stopping every few minutes to read a new message, try the Lite Version.

Not to toot oRGy's horn too much, but all I use are SH3 Commander 2 and Improved U Boat.
He incorporates most of the mods mentioned here in IuB. The first time I did a crash dive after installing IuB, I almost fell out of my chair....I'm not sure which sound mod that came from, but my speakers were up WAY too loud for that!

Speaking of sound mods can anyone susgest a good one ? I just got a Sound Blaster Live card due to my on board chip was slowing getting depth charged ..... So far is great ! nice clear clean sounds in all my games and music ... I can actually hear the wizz of an arrow I shoot in Theif 2 and the thump of it hitting the chest of a guard
Kinda confused with all the mods comming out or are out . Want to have better sounds when ships blow up , flak and deck gun , and of course I just downloaded Submarine_diesel_exterior.wav but haven't yet tested it ...
Rubini's Harbour Traffic Mod adds life to the harbors. Ships and U-boats coming and going. RUB contains a lite version of this.
Does it? All I ever see is the armed trawler or a DD to escort me in and out of the harbour.
I'm using RuB & Commander with some graphical/sound mods. I found these mods added more life to SH3 after I started to lose interest in the plain game.
