View Full Version : Using UUV for traacking contacts?

I played yesterday a mission about tracking a 688i.

You know how hard is to locate one with the Akula, and much more tracking without being detected.

My cuestion is: is possible to launch a UUV to follow the 688i (or any other) with more accuracy but without closing too much?

How easy would be for the enemy to detect the UUV? (apart from hearing or not the launching).
Is noisy as a normal torpedo?

Would it be considered an attack?

I tried, but forgot to slow to 4 knots :damn: , the UUV failed, and I had no more stowed :nope: . The mission was long and I don't want to repeat it.

Sounds like you're in single player. I'm pretty sure a UUV launch will be detected, but I'm not sure how the AI sub will respond. Depends on the doctrine. In any case, the UUV only moves at 5 knots for 30 minutes, so it isn't going to get much closer. Your best bet is to maintain your relative postion with the enemy sub from the moment you first detected it.

as an akula skipper myself a UUV is useless to you in that sence the launch will be detected and the AI submarine will probly fire at you so dont even bother.

your best bet is to extend towed array it makes less noise and you can get a contact easier

Or you can launch your UUV from behind a seamount to monitor over it. But before doing it, just check your back with your TA.

not many sea mounts in the middle of the atlantic where the sea routinely is deeper than 5000meters

and shallow water is an arse cant use TA in shallows cause it hits the bottom

Look at some Seawolf maps were you could find seamounts in the middle of the Pacific, climbing up to - 40 m, with sea floor around at 450-500 m. With the Akula, you can go as deep as 500 m or more, and it leave enough room to use the TA.

All right, was only an idea.

I use the TA. In fact, if the 688i goes slow, is the only way to detect her, but very faint. The UUV thought was for getting another source for TMA.

Thank you all for your answer.

In single I've sometimes chucked the UUV out at 90s to my intended course. Seems to do alright sometimes.
