View Full Version : Another sub on the map plus follow the sub camera view.

I created a mission just to test my skills if you like to try and get through the English Channel, when I went to the map I noticed another sub icon, there isn't another sub there but the icon is following the player sub.
Also right out of the blue the free camera is now sticking with the player sub, I've never had this option before and I don't have any patches installed, I'm playing with the out of the box sim.
I can still click from ship to ship on the free cam by the way but the player sub is in the cylce of views.

i'd quite like the sub view me-self!!

icons on the map screen?? un patched i don't get any at all---let alone a sub!!! what's the score? any mods?

are you sure it's the player sub it's sticking too? or is it the AI sub? perhaps because the AI sub isn't actually in the game it just flicks to the next nearest sub available which just hapens to be the players sub?

Hi CB, Rubini,

No it isn't an AI sub or not to my knowledge any how, all I did was have a player sub and placed it at the start of the Channel. I've been hounded by a few torpedo boats and few DD's but so far I've evaded them.

I have been puzzling and thinking what I've changed recently, then it dawned on me, I deleted all the German text files plus the speech out of the sim, I just thought they were taking up space seeing as they are not used. I don't suppose that has anything to do with it surely.
If it has then perhaps the sim is reading some of this stuff as well as the English files, could there be some differences perhaps, but why would the cam view change?

As for the ghost sub icon, I noticed when I went to TC, it vanished, but as it vanished it spawned again right after the player sub icon, it reminded me of the spawned icons we got in SH2 from old contacts.

Well I think I have found out what it is. When I placed the player sub in the mission with the Mission Editor I thought I would see what these 2 things did (picture insert).
I haven't done this on any of the other subs I've placed in missions, so when I go in the map screen I zoomed in and when I did a TC I noticed the ghost sub icon appear, if I TC a bit more the icon goes, but as soon as it goes another one appears.

Now also when I first start the mission and press the F12 key I am in Free Camera mode and the sub carries on it's journey, for me to keep up I have to press the arrow keys as you know.
Now if I then press the (.) key it is like the Ship Camera view and it stays with the sub, I can rotate an zoom in the same way as I can on the ship camera.

Feedback appreciated.


Edited to add:

I just tried this on another already scripted mission by altering the sub properties, it didn't work at first but after zooming in and out of the map a few times I got the ghost icon, I could then use the external cam to follow the sub.

is it just you with a time delay on your position?

It is not another sub, the icon is spawned from the parameters I mentioned above (I think) but I can live with this to get the camera to follow the sub in external view, I like the eye candy.

ahh i see!!! because the player sub is added to the contact report functioning -you get the icon on the map from a previous position (as you move away) AND this "wakes up" the player sub external cam view (of which the actual code must have been working in V1 but not fully sorted out--)

pure Col 7777 genius!!! :up: :|\ :rock:

wonder how the heck you get this sorted in the campaign? where's the player sub entry for the campaign engine? going to have a look---do you get a radio report message as well?

Hi CB,

I haven't had a radio report yet... but I was submerged a lot in yesterdays mission evading DD's :)
But I just altered a few other sub's parameters in other missions and it works the same, as I said above I needed to zoom in and out a couple of times to enable the camera view.
I'm wondering now to alter those figures some more and see what happens.

Edited to add:

I just found something else out with this, I went to a mission that started in the early morning, still a bit dark. I couldn't get these things to work, but when it changed to daylight I got the ghost icon and the external camera to follow the sub.
So there is more to find out yet.

No I haven't to be honest, but it does vanish with TC then reappears as it does right behind the player sub icon.

Now it seems these figures do play a big part in the icon spawning, I altered them then noticed the icon appeared after 30 mins, then altered them again and it appeared after an hour.
I can't get it to appear any sooner as yet but I'm still trying.

Edited to Add:

I just got the ghost icon, I turned my view straight away and saw nothing, I then sailed right over the icon and still nothing, this is like the ghost icons we got in SH2.

havent been able to find the player sub entrys for the campaign (migth be in the DAT files some where--would need the extractor aint go it sadly dunno where to get it either!)

but whilst your on a roll as it were Col--how's about trying your subs as player escort mod in SH3---now we know AI subs dont move as stock but what about scripting them as escorts to the player sub in the same way as you did in SH2? Serg's sub should work if the stock don't---set them as escort= true with a good convoy spacing and maybe summat fun will 'appen!! :arrgh!:

back that I used to see in external view. When I went into the
campaign it disappeared. I sure could use it again....

You might be using RUB... the original tga is overwrite if a 'empty' one.
Look for this file: UMark.tga (in ...data\misc folder).

Jim,

I too have lost the orange circle but I'm not using Rub, it might be a totally different reason than you have I don't know.

I've not had chance much today to do any more experimenting but earlier this morning the earliest I could get the ghost spawn was within 30 mins exactly from the start of the mission.
I at first thought it was because of it not being daylight but then after trying it in daylight I realised it was a time issue, I went on the map screen did a TC then after 30 minutes the ghost spawn appeared then I could use the external camera to follow the sub.

I did think of that idea for the wolfpacks a while ago but that was before Serg did his mod, I keep meaning to give it another try.

Thanks Rubini, I replaced the empty RUB changed file with the
orginal game one and now I have it back. Not realistic but will
save me much wasted time.....

Col, have not had time to get into testing your map icon because
of this campaign I am into. Getting many interesting facts and situations doing the campaign, sort of a study in progress....

Hi Jim,

Funny thing happened last night, I was testing, testing & testing still trying to get the time for the spawn reduced when I went to external camera view I got the orange circle back now.
But going back to the spawn issue the earliest I can get it up to now is 30 minutes after mission start, so what I do is do a TC on the map screen and after 30 mins the ghost icon appears then I know after that I can use the follow the sub camera view.

The biggest problem with testing is that different mods will give
different results. And because almost everyone playing is modded somewhat different from most others, posting test results will
not always work for everyone....

I altered a ready done mission the other day and in the alteration I changed the properties on the the convoy in the mission using the entries from the above posts.
This will not suite a lot of you but it can be handy if creating a mission and you want to know where the ships are etc.
After 30 mins of TC all the ship's icons appear on the map screen, plus you can then use the (.) key to view your/player sub and stick with it as well as the other vessels when they are within range.
As yet 30 mins is the least time it takes to activate the ship cam for the player sub, you can see this change on the map screen by the ghost icon that reoccures every now and again.
