I think this is about the retail deal guys, sorry. Good news in the long-term but it won't suffice as a substitute for our beloved patch 1.0x. But congrats Sonalysts! We are still rooting for you.

They will release the patch right before the releasing of the retail version, I think...
But wouldn't it be better to release the retail version inclusive of the patch well AFTER the patch is tested by the community?...

Strategy First Signs Dangerous Waters
Montreal, Canada. September 15, 2005. Software publisher Strategy First, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Silverstar Holdings, Ltd. (NASDAQ: SSTR), and Sonalysts, Inc. are thrilled to announce the signing of the realistic naval simulation “S.C.S - Dangerous Waters™.” This all encompassing naval simulator will be available at all major retail outlets before 2006.
I hope they will release the game with the full paper documentation and not the pdf only for cost reduction.

Wishes are the whores of invention.
So no maximus patch but possibly an announcement about a retail deal ?
SS may wish to see more funds flow before satisfying the requirements of the pickier realist hard core (Self included)
The game is very playable as it stands for the wider gamer market.
I hope that I'm wrong ! :hmm:

I am curious how this leaves SCS's tie up with Battlefront.com?
Will they still be the publisher for on-line sales or have they ben left behind by SCS?
Curious to how this is....
I have an idea and an opinion about this but will post it later when I have more time.

I think Battlefront will remain the publisher for the online version.
I doubt the retail version will ship with the full printed manual, it will also most probably include some kind of copy-protection so the 2 markets don't really mix.
Retail for wide visibility and general gamers, online version for "naval hardcore" gamers.
Retail copies sold = more money = patch :) and then DWX :) :)

If Combat Mission is any indication, when BFC published with CDV they retained the rights to all online sales, CDV is retail only.
I would imagine its the same with DW. BFC is still considered their primary publisher, I would imagine, with the retail company providing only logistical support for distribution.
That having been said, BFC is very much on top of their software and is in a position with the 800lbs gorilla CM to dictate terms to their publisher, I'm not sure SCS is in as good a position with DW, however, that's where we can help! ;) :arrgh!:

Who are BFC? who is CDV.
I don't get it. I personally think BF didn't do that great a job.

My 2 cents.
They should offer both versions with and without manual.
Belive it or not some people will be put off by the huge manual. Then again others will drool... ohhh look a REAL manual !
Im glad to see (or guess in this case) that it will be put into retail channels. The ONLY reason I ever even heard of this game was from browsing the sub sim forums.

BattleFront Community=BFC (we use that rather than BF in CM circles)
CDV=retail software publisher

Perhaps, going retail, Sonalysts will have more financial incentive to get the next patch out, with more 'issues' fixed, than they would have otherwise. :|\

You're such an optimist. :-j
I'm not. At this point, I really wish SCS would just tell us that we'll have to mod it ourselves and grant the DWX team permission to make a PCU. Unless, of course, they do want to continue to support the game, but it's facta non verba time. :shifty:
They just follow my bright idea! :|\

I don't understand how adding new platforms is the ONLY way to "support the game". Without a customer-base from which to sell add-ons to, how is DW (or it's add-ons) ever going to succeed? We're going retail so that we can grow the potential audience, so that THEN we can consider releasing addons.
I'm not going to comment on the PCU, because as JSteed and many others know the ability to easily add controllable platforms impacts our ability to sell modifications to our gov't customers.
Of course, if there were just a bunch MORE of you guys then we wouldn't have to worry about all of this... :P

It's not the only way, but with your priorities shifted I think it makes more sense to back off on the PCU stance. Unless you actually plan on expanding after all. Please, prove me wrong! Even a patch might cure my pessimism! :-j

silent hunter 3 has many admirers i also noted sub command and destroyer command not to forget silent hunter 1 and 2 were all good sellers
so why not dw?
The fact that DW will be appearing in a shop near you in the future has to be good.
The higher the sales, the more it justifies a expansion pack. Nobody would ever realease a expansion for a underperforming title, it just doesnt make business sense.
However, I do hope, and im optimistic, having read recent posts on the matter from jamie, that the 1.02 patch is closer now.
Lets all hope that DW performs well on the shop shelves and SCS is in a position to carry on developing this great sim.
After so long without much to mention, Im positive that this can only be a good thing.

There was recently a thread about whether DW was under exposed to potential buyers ...
So, what does this new strategy imply?
(1) That there are naval or hardcore naval gaming enthusiasts who were unaware of DW?
(2) That a significant number of potential buyers already aware of DW will not buy products directly from the Internet?
(3) Going retail will result in impulse sales based on box art and copy?
---
A few comments on the above:
(1) I think everyone who has a moderate interest in this type of game and uses the Internet knew of DW.
(2) This might be an issue; it's hard to measure ... perhaps younger buyers may have been excluded by offering it over the Internet.
(3) You could get a good number of impulse sales, but I really wonder if that is going to lead to a much larger community or simply a high rate of abandonment among purchasers. This type of game can only be enjoyed with a high-degree of committment and interest. Yes, you could turn on auto-crew and show truth, but probably there are better choices for low intellectual challenge and high fidelity sound/graphics.
---
Well, this should be interesting.

If I were not a previous customer of BFC through Combat Mission I probably would not have bought DW, unless it were MORE expensive.
Let me explain, I'm sick of paying 55.95 for internet order software that's not any good. If this were marketed as a professional level product (I consider CM to be in that class but for other reasons) and were in the 80-140 range AND as I said before, for all practical purposes finished with a few minor bugs, I'd probably take a chance and buy it, based on the fact that at this price, I'd expect a certain level of quality that the standard internet price no longer seems to imply.
I bought DW based on the experience I'd had from BFC and Combat Mission and figured they knew what they were doing, plus I'd played 688i.

Congratulations Sonalysts. I believe DW will succeed with more visibility. It is a one of a kind product. And is one hell of an innovative piece of gaming software. And I do want to address a couple of your comments if I may:
I don't understand how adding new platforms is the ONLY way to "support the game". Without a customer-base from which to sell add-ons to, how is DW (or it's add-ons) ever going to succeed? We're going retail so that we can grow the potential audience, so that THEN we can consider releasing addons.

I agree with what you say here Jamie. Add-ons are not the only way to advance DW. But on the same note, it is a very important part of it IMHO. I hope you folks at Sonalysts see your own product here as having incredible potential in expanding the use of the simulated battlespace. With more add-on platforms, I'm excited by this potential. I can truly see you guys milking this for all it's worth. I do not know what resources you guys put into creating these naval platforms in your games. But the possibilities seem endless.
I truly hope that DW is a top seller in the retail world. You guys have truly built a uniquely entertaining simulator here and deserve all the success in the world. So hopefully, we can get "MORE of us guys" in here. Excellent news and best wishes.

It's good news. There's plenty of people who wouldn't bother going through the hassle of buying online, I'm confident there will be some sales out of this.
DW was the first title I bought with BFC, and that was because I really wanted it. I actually own all three Combat Mission titles, but they're the retail versions, because I'm a casual player (Well, CMBB did nearly eat my life for a short time) and picked up each one well after they were released.

Well looks like BattleFront are out of the game.
I just went to the Dangerous Waters site clicking on the link in Jamie's sig and if you click on the order link on the SCS Dangerous Waters site it takes you to Strategy First page.
But if I go to the BattleFront site and then click on Dangerous Waters it goes to the www.battlefront.com/products/dw/index
page....
Gets more interesting every day. I can't wait to see it on the shelves.
Just hope SCS will host an image of the Box art so I can print out a DVD cover.
