Pardon me for asking but are these colors based on real torpedoes?
Come to think of it, what color were real torpedoes? Green? Gray?

Yes it is :)
Initial G7A torpedo's.
Found a picture of a crew loading a G7A in a Type VIIB 1939.

Look at this B&W pic (http://adjunct.diodon349.com/Uboats/Uboat_jpgs/UBoat_loading_torpedo.jpg). You can't tell from this pic (http://adjunct.diodon349.com/Uboats/Uboat_jpgs/u-boat-torpload.JPG). :nope:
If anything, it shows the main body of the torpedo being a light metalic color (steel?) and the front a dark color.
There's also a color picture, showing a fully greased torpedo being loaded but you can't make out the color under the grease.
What was the color of the torpedoes in the movie Das Boot? I seem to recall them being green. :hmm:

There are a whole variaty of color schemes around. Well anyway they look exactly as they do on the picture. :know:

Here's a pic (http://images.myphotoalbum.com/d/da/dan/dang/dange/dangerbarrow/albums/Pearl/torpedo.sized.jpg) that looks just like yours. It's a Japanese torpedo, at Pearl Harbor.
Of interest is this page (http://www.pastfoundation.org/DeepWrecks/TheGermanU-boat.htm). Scroll to the bottom. That could easily translate from the B&W pic (http://adjunct.diodon349.com/Uboats/Uboat_jpgs/UBoat_loading_torpedo.jpg) I linked to before.

Here's another real torpedo pic (http://stevetimko.tripod.com/munichdeutchesmuseumuboat3.jpg) from the Munich Museum. This, too, conforms with the shades shown in the B&W pic (http://adjunct.diodon349.com/Uboats/Uboat_jpgs/UBoat_loading_torpedo.jpg). Looks pretty authentic, actually.
Now we need to ask what did the developers base their color schemes on?
Update: The torpedo in the Chicago Museum's U-505 exhibit has a dulled steel body with a green/blue head, pretty much what in-game.

Is it this color pic (http://www.ww2incolor.com/gallery/album02/aji)?
And note your book says "pre-war".
tankeriv
09-12-05, 07:43 AM
No but it resembles it greatly.
Anyway time to find that book!!
Looks great tankeriv..
I'll definately be using these over the stock ones or the skins I am using now.
I thought that the torpedos would be in truth more dirty and rusty when they reach the water...
I'm wrong?
BTW, it's a great work!

I don't know, but the brass type warhead is very much evident, and the body is either brushed metal or brushed brass as well. That's from what I gather, if this helps anyone, good. :88) I think that the one you submitted is very close to the one I posted last, but I think you mistook the reflections in dark room for black. It's actually brushed aluminum. It looks to me that way. But of course I can be wrong.
@AL - I think they never bothered after certain period to paint them. :hmm:
Rusty torps dont seem like they would be very dependable torps. Great job on the new skins!
ENtek-IO

As far as i can say they were raw metal, covered with grease fat.
I even got a picture somwhere ,in daylight in color ,during a resupply
It looked like the brass copperhead variant ,just that it was covered with yellowish or dark brown grease.
That they were covered grease before shooting ,that seems ovious to me.
to the rust I dont know the english term but the "Flug Rost" is no problem if the torpedo is covered with grease.
I can't see the point in painting them unless it made them smoother or corrosion resistent than plain metal.
The warheads would proberly be coloured for quick identification.
Though none of that proberly helps at all :know:
Any chance of you releasing these as they are now.I think they are fine as is and no need to change a thing with them.

so, where do I get this mod?
tankeriv
09-13-05, 12:56 PM
will be there soon. :)
Salt water is very corrosive and can be very damaging even over short time periods. I'm guessing they kept them covered in grease to keep them protected from the salt water while in storage in the u-boat. Don't want to increase the risk of duds unnecisarily.
It probably also helped with sliding the torpedo into the tubes.
Type941
09-13-05, 02:59 PM
It probably also helped with sliding the torpedo into the tubes.
I can be wrong, but I think it's the torpedo tubes that were greased, not torpedoes themsleves = exactly for that purpose of easy sliding, and this grease was changed after patrols or reapplied if needed. The pics show torpedoes all scratched up but that looks like brushed metal only.
I don't think the torpedoes specifically were greased as that would have made them harder to handle and load, as well as messy (just imagine it for sec). Also you'd have to grease them one by one. With tubes greased - none of this matters. I think they were ok in storage rooms, as they wasted the torpedoes quite often, and the amount of duds was more due to technology than salt water eroding the surface....
I'm just using common sense on this, so I can be wrong, but I think I'm not.
Anyone can confirm for sure?
basilio
09-13-05, 03:05 PM
I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but weren't some sailors applying grease on torpedoes in the Das Boot movie, just at the beginning of the patrol?
This, of course, doesn't confirm anything.........

Yes.
And in one of the previous pics I linked to, the torpedo being loaded from the deck is clearly greased from head to toe.

Either historical or unhistorical color used (I had made the question before asking of color photos of it) you did an excelent work  .
The mapping of the ingame torpedoes is strange and I got unsuccesfull atemps to paint them so I leave as they are.
I think that just keeping the current colors (to fit the torpedo screen) but adding the metal effect you did will be great.
The current one is not so far, acording to Revell, in order to paint the external torpedoes on the S-100 they use a color similar to the ones you used (they offer 2 color sets) I will post them later.
BTW, where to download it?

Come on, release it!!
Flakwalker
09-16-05, 08:10 PM
Ok, the color by Revell are:
Warhead: Cooper Metallic
Body: Brown Silky Matt or 70% Aluminium Metallic + 30% Cooper Metallic
Tail: Anthracite Gray
Propeller: Brass Metalic
Well this colors are made for the S-100 Schnellboote, for both surface ships and submarines they could be the same. Also is not indicated what torpedo is, but for sure they was G7A (surprise factor off on surface)

Very nice shots of the U505, Papabull. Getting decent photos there was pretty difficult, considering how dark the exhibit was.
Nice pics.
The last torpedo (with the red & white stripes) is a training version. The same type of torpedo can be seen in pictures of He 111s used for torpedo bombing.

i think that the TankerIV's are very nice but unrealistic polished and clean.
In u boats the torpedos has a layer of grease to prevent corrosion and sea water filtrations. in case that they want to remove the grease i think that they not polished the torpedo like a silver bullet.
