For some reason lately if someone posts a screenshot my computer shows nothing, the text, smilies & signatures are there but no screenies.
Could someone point out where the problem may be please?
Many Thanks in advance,
Reece.

Hi Reece,

What browser are you using?
If you´re Firefox user there´s an option "load graphics only from original side" o.st. in the web features setting.
Check for that setting, has to be switched off.
Of course "Load graphics" has to be on.
Maybe IE has a similar setting.
Perhaps the options are named slighly different, i use a german fox.

I'm using explorer 6, I should have added that some threads show the images ok such as here:
http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=41263&start=0
Then none here:
http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=42854
There have been others but would have to do a search to find them. Maybe I'm not the only one who cant see them.

ok the images in the first thread are located on the same location like the tread itself. (subsim server) They´re signature pictures..
The ones on the second thread are hosted somewhere else (imageshack server) and are not displayed by your browser cause of a security setting.
you can point the mouse over an image, the location should be displayed in the lower left corner of your browser.

I´guess i found the setting in IE that has to be changed. But i have a german browser and as you can see my english is broken. :)

The setting is called "auf Datenquellen über Domänengrenzen hinweg zugreifen" in german.
It is located in the security settings tab in your browser settings.
Gizzmoe is a good english speaker and german too, maybe he could translate. I´ll pm him.
How about using firefox browser? :P

The setting is called "auf Datenquellen über Domänengrenzen hinweg zugreifen" in german.
It is located in the security settings tab in your browser settings.

"Access data sources across domain".

But I don´t think this is it, because it´s set to Disabled on my system.

The signatures are also not hosted on Subsim.com, but he can see them.

Recce, please try this link:

This is the picture from the second link that doesn´t work for you. Does is show when you click on it?

hmpff, that setting was the only one i noticed to be responsible for that browser behavior.
I guess you can see the screenshots in IE on the 2. link?

It's not just you Reece, it's been very "hit and miss" for me since day one here. Sometimes images show, most times they don't :( I think it is limited though to the imageshack hosted stuff.

I'm on IE6, just tried changing the setting referred to in the previous post, but still no luck.

I get the image when clicking on the link, but not when viewing the thread.

And I can't "point the mouse over an image" because there's no placeholder (no x like usual), so no indication where the image is.

It's very frustrating reading the "what a great picture" text but not seeing the picture!

Well it might sound nasty to say I'm glad I'm not the only one having this problem JScones, but it's a relief that my system is at fault, thought I may have gotten a virus or something! :-?
Yes Gizzmoe, the picture of the sub displays ok :yep:

I hope it's not something as elementary as this:

In IE6, click on TOOLS in the menu bar and select INTERNET OPTIONS.

Click on the ADVANCED tab and scroll down to the MULTIMEDIA section.

Therein, make sure SHOW PICTURES is checked on.

I wish it was. But certainly you didn't think that wasn't the *first* thing I checked? ;)

No, I've never had any probs with viewing images online except for on this forum, and then only limited to those hosted by imageshack or whatever. But it's not something I stress about and I definitely haven't been pro-active in finding a solution!

Are you behind a proxy server? Could it be that ImageShack and the like detect this and block pictures under the circumstances?

Reece

Nope, no proxies. :-?

Then, as Gammel already suggested, try Firefox.

Yes Gizzmoe I think your right with Gammel's suggestion, so this gives me three choices:
Install Firefox, put-up, or shutup!! :rotfl:
Thanks all.

I've got the same problem not being able to see pictures from imageshack. Gizzmoe, Firefox won't fix the problem, I'm using Firefox and can't see pics either. If I load the page in IE, still can't see 'em.

There is a workaround that is a major pain in the backside, but you'll at least be able to see the pics:

1) Right-click on page with missing pics and select:

"View Page Source" (Firefox) or
"View Source" (I.E.)

2) Open a new browser window or tab.

3) Go back to the page source window and do a search for "imageshack". You should see a line similar to this:

<a href="http://img241.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cam267bn.jpg" target="_blank" class="postlink">

4) In the above example, highlight this part:

http://img241.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cam267bn.jpg

then right-click and select "Copy". Do not copy the quotes!

5) Go to the new browser window you opened and paste the copied text into the address bar then hit "Enter". You should get the picture.

Like I said, it's a pain to do but at least you get to see the pics!

HTH

OK, I turned some attention to this and had a play in my Firewall. I changed one setting and the images appeared!

If you use ZoneAlarm, there's a few things that you can do. Choose one that suits you best:

1. click on the "Privacy" tab then click on the "Ad-Blocking" Custom button. Remove the check from the "Banner/Skyscraper ads" option. OR
2. click on the "Privacy" tab then click on the "Ad-Blocking" Custom button. Under "Ad Void Control", select "A box I can mouse over to get the ad to appear".

EDIT: Also remove the check from the "Animation" option and you'll get animated emoticons... Something else I didn't realise I was missing!

I use the second option, cause it loads pages quicker and I can choose to ignore the images I don't want to view (such as signatures). For those I do want to view, I just move my mouse over them and they appear.

Note that I still have the IE6 Pop-up blocker enabled.

:o Whoa, I might turn it back off again! Have you *seen* the size of some of the signature block images!?! LOL

No! after your last post it put me off :dead: as all I have is a very slow 56k dialup connection averaging around 1.2k  (no wideband available here). But yes I am running zonealarm, I think microsofts firewall sucks & I'm not going to install SP2 as I get too many problems with that installed!
Cheers.
