View Full Version : Leigh Lights/Merchant Lights! (download)(fixed)
Here it is for those who don't want to dig around .eqp files themselves.
[FIXED download - added readme file, removed extra files for the C3]
http://rapidshare.de/files/4802791/lights_fixed_.zip.html
If anyone wants to upload this to Realsimulation for me (unless Martin pops by himself) - go ahead! (I keep having problems connecting to that upload server).
Should be JSGME compatible.
Due credit for the discovery to CB.. and Col7777

Features:
"Leigh Lights" for all large aircraft:
-Catalina
-Wellington
-Sunderland
-Liberator
(smaller aircraft could not carry such equipment, so they don't get anything :shifty: )
Single spotlights for dry cargo ships:
-Coastal Merchant/Tramp Steamer
-Small Merchant
-C2/Medium Merchant
-C3/Large Merchant
-Liberty Cargo
-Victory Cargo
Spotlights for transport ships:
-Troop Ship (1 spotlight)
-Passenger Liner (2 spotlights)
(Tankers probably don't want to attract any more attention to themselves than they should, so they get nothing :shifty: )
(...and warships already have theirs, so...)
Oh yes, and if anyone wants to add spotlights to anything else...

Cheers for this CCIP, what is the difference between the C3 and the rest of the ships. It's folder has all the files in it while the other ship folders have only the .eqp file

oops
I forgot to delete them.
Will put up a fixed version and also add a readme shortly.
The mod is so basic it's a wonder I managed to screw up
You can just delete all the other files from the C3 and use only the .eqp before applying the mod.
Excuse me,but since i don't understand very well the way mods works, could you tell me if it's compatible with the merchants variety mod?Because i think i remember it goes in the same folder.
Thank you.

sorry, CCIP - is this mod Rub 1.43 compatible ? The JGSME is trying to modify the files that were previously modified by RuB.
Beery, any chance to include this mode in next Rub release ?
thnx
You might want to go to the NKC3 folder and delete all the files except the .eqp file (error on my part, as mentioned).
Otherwise - I run (a modified) RUb 1.43, so it's definitely good to go
Changed the download to a fixed version, including a small readme; removed extra files for the C3.
Will try to get in touch with Terrapin on this shortly.

What a nice mod!
I installed only the merchant-ship lights, figuring they wouldn't do much...
Then around dawn, I hit a lone Victory-Cargo ship which didn't sink on the first shot. His light went on though, searching around for what hit 'em. This mod works very well. After seeing the ship, I installed the aircraft lights too.

I love the aircraft with the lights! When SH3 first came out and I started browsing the boards, someone had a pic in their sig block of a submarine silhouetted against an attacking aircraft using its Leigh Light- I couldn't WAIT to see that in the game...what a disappointment!
Now, however, I can eagerly anticipate one of you posted just such a pic....
(You don't expect me to do that with MY boat, do you? :rotfl: )
Thanks CCIP,

This mod compitable with other mods? Or to put it another way is there any that it isnt?
This mod compitable with other mods? Or to put it another way is there any that it isnt?
It should be 100% compatible. The only thing it has any real effect on is that for one type of loadout on some of the planes, instead of carrying 8 bombs, they will carry 7 bombs and a light. I personally don't think it's a big enough difference.
Otherwise.... all it does is fill otherwise-empty slots on units. :)

So are there flares?
CCIP - JSGME alerts me during installation that "ALB_B24Liberator.eqp" has already been altered by the "RUb1.43" mod.
Is this another type of loadout as you said?
There's no flares on aircraft, no.
Ships do use starshells, but these are fired from normal guns, and fairly rarely.
***
This is made with RUb 1.43 files, but technically should be compatible with other versions without a problem. It will not cause any conflicts, and I would expect at least the leigh lights to perhaps make it into future RUb. :hmm:

That's what I'm referring to- is there any way to mod this to allow merchants to use starshells? It would be nice if they would fire a flare when they've been hit...

Awesome CCIP!
Keep up the great mods!
Anyway to increase the chance a wounded ship fires starshells? Just asking....
Not with anything I know...
I think it might be possible by creating a special gun that would fire starshells only, but that's not something I personally know how to do.
I have a feeling it might be a bit tricky, and would certainly require someone who has looked into modifying things like that already.

Completely beyond me as to how this could be done/if at all. But it would be very cool if ships could be made to fire distress flares after being torpedo'd. It's probably not accurate historically. I doubt in wartime if any ship would be prepared to answer such a call, knowing there was a sub in the vicinity. However it would look good none the less.

Very nice mod! Thanks a lot!!
Though I can't get around to asking one question myself:
Do always all the ship types above have the lights, or is that date-specific (like the weaponry) or is there a random element involved, like with the cargo?
Thanks!!!!!!!!

Hi
I downloaded this mod and liked the idea of transport ships and cruisers getting search lamps but when I engaged a convoy I was lit up like a Xmas tree.
Can you add the original back up files to the modded ones in the RAR download
I would much appreciate it

Any chance you could turn this around and give us a search light? Would be awesome for deep sea exploration. I am looking into fixing up an "Atlantis" mod for kicks.

I removed the lights from all but the Troop Transport and the Transport.Keeps it interesting
No, I don't think it's possible to get a working light on the sub - least not one you could actually use as you'd like to.
I'm sure it'd be easily possible with an SDK, but I think the SHIII mod community sounds like a broken record about that issue by now

Nice Mod. I wonder if a person could use that 'Randomizer batch' program used by Iambecomelife 'Merchant Skins Variety Pak' to give random ships lights, so that not all of them have one, and you would not really know which ships is going to light up the night?
Do always all the ship types above have the lights, or is that date-specific (like the weaponry) or is there a random element involved, like with the cargo?
You can change the dates when the lights get installed for more variety also. Plus use that simple batch program to make it so ships have lights at random, it would be a nice improvement on CCIP Liegh Lights Mod.
In IuB I only keep the leighlights on the aircraft. Merchants flicking on their lights makes them a lot easier to see during night operations, and hence, easier to sink.
I would imagine historically that ships would run blacked out all the time in convoys.

I thought the ships only flip on their lights when they get attacked?
I haven't tried. The DD's do it when they suspect your presence or when other ships have been attacked.
Nope. They flip them on whenever they get some indication of a target in proximity.
One neat thing is that if a ship in a convoy gets hit by a torpedo, ships on the side of the convoy where they think the torpedo came from put the lights on and search that side - even if you're somewhere in the middle of the convoy by that point

I like this mod very much, but prefer, like Jungman, some random element.
Could not the random folder in SH3 Commander be used? I've been looking at Beery's post on randomizing gramophone tracks -
http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=43048&highlight=gramophone+random&sid=8e061293e6145282683fcff7950116a1
Could not a similar thing be done mixing CCIP's modded files and the the default ones? The date feature could also be used, perhaps making ships more likely to have searchlights as the war progresses.

In SH2 the merchants lighted up the sky with starshells didn't they ?
Wonder why the Devs did not code it in sh3 ? ( or did they and left it out ? )
No, they do use starshells, but I am not sure what the exact conditions for that are. The usage of starshells in SHIII seems to be somewhat rare - although I do see them fired every once in a while.

I've been playing SHIII since the first day and have seen starshells from a convoy only once.
I love the leigh lights and searchlights mod but it does seem a bit overkill sometimes. The idea of randomizing merchants with searchlights seems like a good one to me.

There was some discussion about this a while ago, along the lines of using the building nighttime window textures to cause neutral ships to light up. I don't think anything came of it, but perhaps with these new tools.... :hmm:

Just a question before I try it.
Will those leights always be on the merchants and planes?
Or will some of them also come without?
And more important will the leights on planes appear first later in the war?
Not sure but wasn't it around the end of 42 when it started service?

Well in my opinion this mod, except the aircraft, is unrealistic. Merchants never had any lights on, for obvious reasons. They would become easier targets.
Of course it had to be as difficult as possible for uboats to aim at merchants, in convoys they were not even allowed to stop and pick up survivors from sinking ships, the crews were forced to watch their friends die in the water. Tough rules there...

Realistic or not, this mod looks fun, i can't wait to try it out. ANything that helps light up the night is helpful.
Gives a whole new meaning to "lighting up the convoy".... although thats usualy done with torpedo's :88)
I've had this mod for awhile and I love it. The lights on the ships add drama to night attacks and the Leigh lights are excellent.

Despite it looks great I´m considering remove the mod for the ships in my installation, because i think that for an unarmed ship at night the better thing is running away to the darkness and not switch on a search light saying "! I am here ! " :dead:
it only makes sense in the armed ships with deck guns or planes

I've been using this mod from the beginning and realism aside it's very cool to see the searchlights go on on some merchants at night pure eye candy but cool as all hell. As far as the planes go. I've yet to be attacked by planes after dark...ever. What year did ac begin flight ops during dark?
Really looking forward to the lights coming on out of nowhere at night but so far nothing.
:lurk:
Historically, the first successful Leigh Light attacks took place in October 1942.
The relative chance of night attacks compared to day attacks is actually the same through the entire war (which is a bit of a bummer, since you can even be hit at night in 1940 sometimes - and that's not very realistic) - but when the chances go WAY up across the board around May 1943 - you'll sure see them at night, too :)

Thanks CCIP I was wondering if maybe something went sideways-I guess I've just been lucky. Most of the time I get killed by AC during the day. I usually hit high TC at night.
