You can download the WAV file from here (http://www.dasboot.com/sounds/ping.wav).
Questions:
1. Is this a more realistic sound than the one ingame?
2. If so, is it as easy as replacing file \SilentHunterIII\data\Sound\Sonar.wav or do the other sonar files there have to be replaced, too?
I'm asking because if the movie's ping is more realistic, a little mod would be nice, if someone is talented enough to do it.
I have a version of that ping I believe, it sounds better though as for realistic, its unlikely what was in movie/ingame is realistic. There's been discussion before about what it sounds like. Some say "little stones thrown against the hull", others say a very piercing sound.
Whatever, be sure the file is PCM, 16bit, Mono, and 44khz. Otherwise you may get crashes.

Shouldn't the last file above have a faster/shorter beat to it? It almost sounds like the 2nd file. :hmm:
The first file sounds likes very much like the one I linked to in my 1st post but better refined for the game. :yep:
The last two files are for when you get sonar coating for your uboat later in the war.
I'm using those sounds and they sound fine to me, better than the default.
However, I've yet to hear them in my career as it's only 1940 and I've been playing the game so well that I haven't been pinged since the war started!
(Just yesterday, in support of the invasion of Norway, a taskforce of an Illustrious and 6 destroyers sailed right into me - and a spread of 4 eels took care of the carrier, followed by a dive to 70m. Destroyers didn't even start pinging and I was far away an hour later!)

I agree that they sound better. My point is the swiftness of the beat.
How does the game increase the rapidity of the ping as the ship approaches closer? I thought it used these 3 files. Otherwise, how else does the game increase the ping?
The game changes the speed and pitch of the sound played internally.

Test them in the game!
If u don`t like em, just kick em ;)
Yeah, the game pitch them... they are first slow and intensive...
the nearer the DD comes to u, the faster the pings are running....
like in the Movie.
If they are to long, we can cut the end away.....
So they will be much more shorter the pings.... i think.

Not all ingame-sound have that 44100 16bit mono format.
Be carful, i found out due horrible crashes that SH3 is quite sensible to errors at sound formats.
Some examples:
- amb_SubmarineInterior.wav = 44100 2channel 16bit
- B-24 airplane.wav = 44100 1channel 16bit
- Dive sequence.wav = 22050 2channel 16bit
- sonar.wav = 22050 1channel 16bit
I dont want ot sound like a know all guy, but every soundpack i´ve downloaded so far had some files in where the format
didn´t match the stock game.
It´s easy to check with winamp, play the file, right click on the title displayed in playlist and click "view file info"
It took me ages to create a soundpack for personal use thats free of errors and fits my needs.
It´s not very huge, many sound of the stockgame are fine as they are. Most new files come from the exellent incognito soundpack (which had errors in too) some are volume adjusted.
The sonar file posted by the Avon Lady is also in (after some noise reduction). I like that slight disortion of that sound
Most improvements where made with an atmospheric underwater cruise in mind. Run silent, run deep!
I recomment to set the crew speak noise level in main menue to -15, commands are too loud compared to the rest (my opinion)
Use good speakers or headphones and beware of DC´s ;)

What sounds were wrong in the Incognito Sound pack? I use it, and never have ctd's, but maybe I'm not hearing all the sounds if you are right!
What sounds in the sound pack needed fixing??

If your game crashes with an error related to "sound.act" then you know its a sound problem.
I have a feeling only certain soundcards have crashes related to bitrate problems.
I have crappy onboard AC97 audio - those with more advanced cards may have less problems.
All audio files should be 44khz, 16bit, mono, and PCM .wav's.
hi Soviet Warlord,
What soundcard do you have?
It´s good you have no crashes, so keep your setup as it is.
I can´t tell you what sound from incognito pack where not the same format as stock game, i guess it was the interior sound and some others. You´d have to check for yourself, but you can safe the work of doing this when your game runs well..
Maybe on some setups it´s not a problem when the file formats does not match the stock ones.
But i guess your on the safer side when they are equal.
I had bad problems with every soundpack i installed so far without checking (i have this AC97 crap as well)
btw realtek has new beta drivers on their webside, but i havn´t had the guts so far to install them. I´ll wait for the officals (perhaps)
