G'day,
How do I get rid of the Hull % damage indicator? I would rather have the ability to make my own judgement call as Captain of U-88 to either return to port or remain in the battle. I uderstand that 1.43 /1.44 may already have this but I don't use them.
Please help

Seeing as you cant really inspect your hull you kind of need it.
Just dont look at it.
Like you need a health meter in a FPS, because you cant feel what your character is at.
download RUB, then go the readme..... the creators did a great job of documenting their work...... your'll see comments for each modification (along with the file name that was modified to accomplish it)
With a little digging, you should be able to find the file(s) that were altered to remove the hull %. In theory you should be able to cut/paste them into your game.... and it will work. (just cut/paste the files you need to swap... ignore the rest of the modification files)
I did this to remove the murky water effects from RUB, without adversly effecting the game.
Makesure you backup your work just in case.
Good luck.
The Hull integrity notification is kept in the en_menu.txt and de_menu.txt files (which one the game accesses depends on the text language option you use).
Look down the file until you see the following line:
589=HULL INTEGRITY %s %
Or in the German file:
589=RUMPFZUSTAND %s %
Change this (in whichever file your game accesses) to read:
589=
That's all you need to do.
Note: it is indeed realistic NOT to have a hull integrity percentage readout. No U-boat commander could tell what the state of his hull was while the boat was at sea. A seemingly badly damaged hull might survive numerous depth charge attacks, while a seemingly undamaged hull could collapse after a light depth charge attack. The commander had no way of knowing until his boat was inspected in the base. He would certainly not have a percentage readout. This hull integrity 'feature' is probably the single most unrealistic aspect of this simulation.

To bad the Dev. Team didn't use their brains. On a sub your best info on you Hull Integrity is your Chief Engineer. They could have used him to give you an "Idea" of how sound your boat was with nothing more than a Report feature. Something like:
"Captain, we'll have to reduce our max depth by at least 20%."
Sure the Dev's wouldnot have put this issues high on thier priority list.

Maybe none of them thought of it. I didn't, but now that I read it I think it's a cool idea.
Seeing as you cant really inspect your hull you kind of need it.
I don't think so. With a little bit of practice and experience, as well as paying attention to audio cues ( your crew men, the sound of the hull creaking,) You can pretty well work out how much damage you have and how deep you should be able to go.
The fact is, real U-boat commanders took their boat in for repairs if they got any sort of significant damage. You can't fight effectively with damaged equipment. Any newbie can tell a heavy attack from a light one, so if you're on the receiving end of a heavy depth charge attack, it's time to call the patrol off.
Otherwise called "mission kill."
Tell me about it, this is the seccond time I got killed because I crashdived after eating a few shells... I heared the hul creak and buckle but it was to late to recover thx to my great diving speed.. :shifty:
I would really like the crew warning me of the danger.

Hi all!
That is one of the main thing in that sim!
Playing with Hull integrity in percent.....
Hey guys, i wonder if anybody plays with that feature! that is like the one u have with the Stealth meter.....
The Captains in the time in WWII were lucky to have so such things like the percentage shown in % for their hull!
It is maybe a nice ,,tool" for people which are playing the game just4fun, but what is that for a Sim, when i can see how much my hull is?
U should play like it was in real life, that is much more intensive and much more fun, to not know how much ur Hull is damaged! the captians did the same how it was sayed in this posts:
After a huge attack or damage, they returned to prot because of the safety of the Boat and Crew!
I think it is good to play on hy realism! U will have much more fun in the whole game!
Damn those things like hull integrity and stealth meter and so things, which are all the most unrealistic part in that great sim!
There are enough people which are playing this arcade settings, but good for us to deactivate them. :)

Hmm... I've just finished my first patrol in new campaign (starting in september 39)
I was assigned to patrol AM23 so after about 1,5 day of clear sky and no ships I decided to check AM02, AM52 and AM53. Good wether but not much luck there. Just one tug boat sunk with deck gun.
Next day I was still patroling AM52 and suddenly go a convoy report (?!?) I could not believe - convoy so early? (it was 13th september). I did all the calculation and itercepted it. Still with not much luck - just one C2 sunk and one Victory ship slightly damaged. I noticed a Fiji in convoy. I hit it with torpedo and it almost sunk. It catched fire and almost layed on the sterboard. I thought that it will sunk in few minutes. Nothing happened :(
I made second approach in the middle of the night. Submerged but was not silent enough and one of the escorts spoted me. I managed to sunk just another C2. And then.. escort started pinging me. I was surprised - first time ASDIC so early in war. I had hard time with 2 destroyers. My boat was damaged, some flooding in aft. torpedo room. I managed to stoop flooding and repair the boat. For next few hours I was hunted with ASDIC... many deptcharges but luckily no more hits. After this, aft. torpedo room stayed red (even after repairs) in crew/damage screen.
I thought.. I'm lucky.. I guess my hull integrity is very low now. I have to be carefull (I was at 120m in my VIIB when hit with wasserbomben). After few hours i escaped and started preparation for 3rd approach (still 4 torpedos left). Dangerous waters... not to deep but I decided to try to try to kill this Fiji. I overtook the convoy, spoted some tug boat, then fishing boat. Sunk them with deck gun (fishing boat with just 3 shells!). But suddenly an aircraft appeared.. I crash dived but took damage.. Flooding in forward sleeping section. Managed to stop it.
I made 2 more attempts to intercept a convoy. In one I fired 3 torpedos. 2 to Victory ship - no kill, she seemed she did not noticed I hit her ;-) I turned the boat and fired torpedo T1(magnetic to C2). Missed bit it hit C2 in next column (i guess my contact report to BDU about the convoy at 10knots was not accurate - they were doing about 6 knots) ;-) Again no kill, just catched fire.
Then I intercepted the convoy again with only 1 torpedo left. Fired the torpedo.. (T1) but.. a dud or something? Low gyro angle, correct depth, impact pisto but.. missed? anyway i heard some explosion about half minute after it should hit a fiji (torpedo hit the bottom of the sea?). Weird thing was that Fiji seemed to be completely repaired. No fire, no inclination.
Anyway. I took a course to homebase. No surprises, calm comeback to Wilhelmshaven.
The most weird thing was a patrol report - it told me i had 100% of hull integrity!!! how could it be? I was depthcharged by destroyers, my after torpedo room was red for the rest of the mission, then hit by a plane and no damages to the hull? I thought my boat is so damaged It won't go to next patrol before Christmas.
Anyway - I was promoted to Oberleutnant zur See :)
Finally.. I was not feeling comfortable when 3 of 5 officers were Oberleutnants ;-) but recruited two of them anyway before first patrol because of their skills.
I'm using 1.4b with rub1.43+patch1.43+berrywater1.44
--U-Boat Patrol History-----------------------------------------------
01. 03SEP39 - 21SEP39 (19 DAYS)
Ships sunk: 7 (7 Merchant, 0 Warship)
Tonnage: 20811 (20811 Merchant, 0 Warship)
BTW: is it possible to do a mod which will give some renown for damaged ships? I'm reading Blair's "Hitler's u-boat war" and I noticed that commanders were credited for sinking 'half' of ship when for example one of them damaged it and second finished.
