View Full Version : We regret to inform you...
....that U-108 (IXB) has been lost at sea with all hands in may 1942, off the coast of USA :damn:
Apparently the skipper thought that he was finally out of the range of those pesky Catalinas - Aber Nein! He did put up a good fight, downing one of the Catalinas earlier, but the last one appeared after a long pause and so the skipper thought it was all right to go to TC 128
Well, dead is dead. Too bad about my crew, they were good men all well trained.

U-417 fires three shots with the deck gun to honor the heroes of U-108.
I`m having problems with the enemy planes too. The Bay of Biscay is their playground now.

Watch that time compression vs. enemy air in later years, it's
a sure killer of U-Boats...
JIM
I second what FAdmiral said! time compression becomes your enemy in later years, when it comes to aircraft attacks.

There are no roses on a sailors grave,
No lilies on an ocean wave,
The Only tribute is the seagulls' sweeps,
And the teardrops that a sweetheart weeps.
Hi all
Thanks for your kind words - and Drebbel for the flowers :sunny:
Yes, TC can be a killer, we all know that! So I tried to be very careful, sailing 'Deck Awash', and if surfaced I had the flak manned. And I kept to TC64, and kept my finger on the backspace button.
But, as I said: After shooting down the second to last Cat, I had sailed TC64 for most of the night, leaving square CB (I think) on course SE. So I really thought I was in the green, relieved my flak gunners and went to TC128, waiting for dawn where I would submerge. 2 Minutes later (still pitch dark), "Aircraft spotted". It was too close to dive, so I manned the flak guns, went to AKA (had been travelling at slow speed to preserve fuel), 15 degr stb rudder - to no avail. 2 bombs on top of me, sound of water and broken glass, a short glimpse of the damage screen with most of my boat red and the crew too...You're D.E.A.D.
Sigh - I was actually a bit shaken. Just goes to show how much you are immersed in this fantastic game!
New career: This time I think I'll stick to type VII to avoid the long patrols. I need to see some convoys around England, I haven't seen one in my last 10 patrols or so (I 'died' on no 15). Maybe I should also try RuB, it seems very interesting!

editing ur tc in the main.cfg in ur save folder realy helps...
my game autopauses as soon as a aircraft is spotted/detected.

Therein lies the problem: When is the enemy DETECTED?? Answer: When he is SEEN!
At night or reduced visibility that is often too late! If only we had a mechanism to drop TC when the stealth icon trurns RED. But the only mechanism I know of is your eyes, and how fast you are on the backspace key :-?
Oh, and I do have set my TC to 1 on any enemy detected.

Spotting of planes is a bit ****ed up.
But not to worry, there may be some mod fixes on the way.

The faster the TC, the smaller the response time of the watch crew. It shouldn't really be like this. The applies to planes and ships alike.
No, the planes have an extra variable that needs to be taken into account, which is their height. Ships are only distance. The height at which crew can spot can be modded, so hopefully it'll have an effect...

The speed of your PC also has an effect on this I beleve.

yup... no faster than 256... and my finger on the C key :D
even submerged and snorkeling...
i'm in Nov'44... never thought i'd get this far without dying...
but they're sending me through the channel... actually, i chose to go through the channel, a decision i may not live to regret...
the aircover is constant... and it sounds as if they're using multiple sorties and atomic weapons up there :-j

my game usually detects the planes when they are within spitting distance with bombs about to drop.
been lucky so far and have survived the encounters but i fear my time may be running out.

So I take it that the storms were, indeed, a blessing, and you were able to recharge the batteries. Here's hoping you've made it to the air gap.

:D yeah... i'm still alive and kickin Captain Takeda... much to my surprise...
they've now sent me from Bergen to BF something or the other... and i decided to go through the channel...
don't really care now if i die or not... :-j :-j :-j now that i've experienced the thrill of a TypeXXI...
besides... the routine of snorkeling and staying submerged is taking its toll... it must be, 'cause i'm doing things now that i'd never try while i was cashing renown...
at this very moment i'm sitting on the bottom, beside a pier at Dover...
i diverted into Dover... sunk a destroyer that was just sitting there (it had serchlights suddenly come on, i thought it was going to take off after me  )... a cargo ship and a tanker...
... then i manuvered the sub (backed it in!!!) into one of the empty dock spaces... and am sitting on the bottom there, wating to see what happens.
man this is sooooo coool...

 Imagine trying to explain that patrol to BdU. It will be interesting to see how long you can sit there without counterdetection.
You're braver than I. My late war plan is to get the XXI as early as possible (like you did), and spend as much time in the Mid-Atlantic air gap as humanly possible. Screw significant tonnage gain, I just want to survive until May of '45. Then I'll sail to Portsmouth.

yup... they're gonna have my arse when i return... but maybe a lil tonnage will help pacify em a bit....
i actually had to cheat, and manually mod the config files in order to have enough renown for a XXI... they wanted some outrageous amount... i know i'd wind up dying or the war would end before i ever accumulated that much renown...
other than that, i play by the rules... 100% realsim (another reason i'd never get that much renown :) )... and if i die, i start a new career all over...
hey, come to think of it... maybe that's why i'm being so reckless... i sorta miss the ole dugout canoe :-j :-j :-j
anyways... the crew is resting... i think i'll do the dumb thing and wait until dawn before we head out to deep water again...
deep water... hah, that's a joke... i've got the whole channel to get through before i see the open Atlantic again...
i'll never make it...

Yeah. The plan is to beach the boat and persue careers as illegal immigrants. I'm hoping for a job in a local sweatshop, or perhaps as a drug mule.

Yeah, there are plenty of 'Beer Joints/bars and nice looking women in Portsmouth.. Sounds like you will have an interesting career once you beach the boat, but you will probably be interogated for several months first.. -Nightowl

And so, we would obviously be taking the boat to the British Portsmouth as per the instructions of Operation Regenbogen.

I have it so my boat automatically goes to periscope depth when an aircraft is sited, this alerts me from my sleep on the couch cos i here the dive bell ringing which alerts me into action. i then order crash dive at flank speed. i always (so far) just make an escape. But this DOES NOT WORK for against destroyers! many times i have been in TC of 128 or higher only for it to stop at 1 then i hear "WERE UNDER ATTACK SIR! go to external view and theres a destroyer 300yrds or LESS! away, although im not really worried cos twice now a destroyer has ran over me while in a middle of a crash dive and i have survived!?!? heavy damaged but never died. Its seems the destroyers dont destroy you if rammed. Although its only March 41
I need help on this one though, In options theres a check where you dont want help from the officer to setup torpedoes etc.,, well its doesn't work on my install? I always get that red triangle and auto targetting. How can i get rid of this,i is there a file i can edit. Ive tried Woofies mod where you can turn of auto targetting yet i still get auto? :hmm:

If you get depth charged by aircraft while in transit and get sunk, your crew has a much better chance of getting out than if your sub is deep.
