Blimps were used extensively (and quite successfully) by the US Navy during WWII to help escort convoys and keep a look out for U-boats. I haven't seen any mention of them in the forums, so I guess that they're not in SHIII? (Haven't been to the US in-game, yet.) That'd bee a cool add-on. They'd be fun to shoot down!

The term "blimp" is used when the airship is non-rigid (unlike the Zepplins, which had a rigid, metal framework inside). Blimps are usually smaller, too. (There is also a semi-rigid type of airship, where just the bottom part of the "balloon" has a framework.)
According to MS Encarta, all types of airships can be called dirigibles, too.
