The "I Hate Type II Torpedoes" Mod, for Silent Hunter III

================================================== =======

Version 1.0

August 25, 2005

Produced by The Avon Lady

Introduction:
-------------

Type II torpedoes! What are they good for?! Absoultely nothing! I'd rather have a Type I any day,
in place of a Type II. Type IIs can only travel slow. Type I's speed can be adjusted from slow to
medium to fast.

Don't you just hate the chore of manually replacing Type II torpedoes, which SH3 inserts by
default into some of your sub's tubes, at the start of a mission or patrol? What a waste of
mouse movement!

Well, I've decided enough's enough! Enclosed are versions of the game's configuration files,
where every reference to a sub with a default loadout of a Type II torpedo has been changed to a
Type I torpedo instead.

Even after installing this mod, you can still manually select Type II torpedoes for your sub while
you're still in base, if you really want to. Go ahead - see if I care!

Installation Instructions:
--------------------------

I've enclosed three renditions of this mod. One is for SH3 version 1.4b without Real UBoat Mod
version 1.43 installed. A second rendition is for SH3 version 1.4b with Real UBoat Mod version 1.43
installed. The 3rd rendition is for players who have also installed version 1.43 of the SH3 Commander
program.

WARNING: If you are running a version of SH3 other than v1.4b, do not install anything herein.
Similarly, if you are running a version of the Real UBoat Mod other than v1.43, do not install the enclosed
Real UBoat Mod rendition of this mod. Similarly, if you are running a version of SH3 Commander other than v1.43,
do not install the enclosed SH3 Commander rendition of this mod.

I recommend that if you are using SH3 Commander v1.43, that you install BOTH enclosed renditions of
this mod - the rendition for S3 Commander and the rendition for SH3 with or without the Real UBoat Mod support,
depending on whether you have the mod or not. That way, the mod will always take effect, whether you run SH3
native or via the SH3 Commander.

Installation Warning!
---------------------

If you have already modified SH3's Basic.cfg or Basic1x.cfg files or any of the Basic.cfg files within
SH3 Commander's "Flotilla" subfolders, this mod will replace your existing files.

Installing the Mod's Native SH3 Rendition
-----------------------------------------

For users of the JSGME mod installation utility for SH3, simply copy the enclosed
"I Hate Type II Torpedoes Mod" folder or the enclosed "I Hate Type II Torpedoes Mod For RUb 1.43" folder in its
entirety into JSGME's "MOD" folder within SH3's installation directory, run JSGME, select "I Hate Type II
Torpedoes Mod" or "I Hate Type II Torpedoes Mod For RUb 1.43" and click on the ADD MOD arrow to install.

For manual installation, copy the "data" folder and sub-contents contained within the enclosed
"I Hate Type II Torpedoes Mod" folder or the enclosed "I Hate Type II Torpedoes Mod For RUb 1.43" into SH3's
installation folder.

Installing the Mod's SH3 Commander Rendition
--------------------------------------------

Copy the "Flotilla" folder and sub-contents contained within the enclosed
"I Hate Type II Torpedoes Mod For SH3 Commander v1.43" folder into SH3 Commander's installation folder.

Is it a bug or a feature that you´ve kept the T III´s? They are as slow as the T II.

Feature but you're right!

So folks, should I change all the T3s to T1s? :hmm:

Well, if you changed the T-IIs because of their speed, why shouldn't you change the T-IIIs too? :)

Of course! You hate T II´s, so it´s logical to also hate T III´s... :)

I think the TIII is better than the TII, although they had the same speed, I never seen a TIII exploding in advance or not exploding because a critical target angle. Just my impression. Often, I need of a torpedo with electric engine, for daylight attacks in headon convoys. If you use TI only you'll be a DC candidate in a short time.

Heh.

Mind you, I've read that for quite some time, real U-boat captains were instructed to never fire the TI's on fast settings - just like they were instructed to not use magnetics. Both were notoriously unreliable, which is not simulated in SHIII.

I no longer use TI's on fast, (at least until late war), and I also don't use magnetics unless fired in salvos with impact-triggered ones (which they usually would've been after the fiascos of the Norwegian campaign).

But hey, that's just a voice talking out of the "basement of anal realism" here :yep:

:rotfl:

It's just a figure of speech. Meaning "really strict".

Really.

Is it a bug or a feature that you´ve kept the T III´s? They are as slow as the T II.

Actually the description is still wrong. I worked with dev Elainiaba to get this right. It is correct in game mechanics though. Prove it yourself look in Torpedo.dat or sim to recall.

T-2 Slow cold electric torp moves at 28 knots.

T-3 Better electric torp moves at 30 knots.

The game really uses 28 knots, check it out, many people wondered why the torp was missing behind the ship. You must take this into account for a manually fired torpedo.

Look for the thread on this in a past post two or three moths ago.

Wolfie's Tweeker made a GUI Program tweak to change default loadouts and stuff I use alot for ease.

Electrics are good to hit a DD coming for you since they can and will move away from a steam torpedo. Always have one handy for that annoying DD.

Edit: Wrong name. :D

Or an acoustic, they won't be able to avoid them even if they make a thousand hard turns, hehe... :D

Hmmmmm, am I missing something or did you go to all the trouble changing those files when TWEEKsub will do the same thing?

TWEEKsub will let you change the basic torpedo loadout for ANY sub for ANY year. I run all my subs with T1s and then change the loadout if I want just before I go on patrol in the U-Boat screen in the game. :hmm:

I noticed that I don't have that tool in my list. Could you give me a link to the post where it was released, please?

Thanks in advance.

Martes86,

It's on the subsim.com Download Section for SHIII. Here's the blurb on it, it's about a 1/4 way down the page.

"Wolfie's SH3 Tweak Pack (271kb) - This pak contains two programs for tweeking SH3. TweekSH3 makes changes to time compression, map settings and auto-identify of targets. TweekSUB makes changes to the torpedo loadout of any or all subs."

Hope that helps.

Thanks for pointing me to it. Anyways, I prefer to add links to threads in this forums in which the creator explains the thing's features or simply announces its release. Will see what can I do.
