Convoy escort location around convoy?

Does anyone know if there's a basic rule the game follows when placing escorts?

It seems

1 esccort -> front of convoy
2 escrot -> ?
3 escort -> front + 2 in rear
4 escort -> ?
5 escort -> ?
6 escort -> ?
7 escort -> ?
8 escort -> ?

Anyone know what the logical distribution is, if any, for these configurations?
