Seagulls and AI ASW

OK a stretch here but I have seen this more than once.

lurking about in shallows night or day I find myself more likely to have intercepts sent my way if those birds are flying about my scope.

in real life their may be some justification for this - I went whale watching from Olafsvik, Iceland about 50km out towards blue water North Atlantic a few years ago.

I asked the Captain how do they find the whales?

Besides the pattern of feeding - three things he uses, 1. a listening device, (I am guessing like a hydrophone), a good watch crew :up: 3. gulls/birds; he said watch they will always be near where they are feeding to fetch up chum/debris - he said the killer whales are easiest to locate this way.

I wonder aloud if there is any correlation in SH3?

Maybe a crew member just dumped the garbage...

Seagulls are very opportunistic.. bordering on parasitic (it is easier to take or steal food than to catch it yourself).

Yeah I know probably all random chance but have experienced it now on three careers...

BTW my AA gunners couldn't hit the Goodyear Blimp at short range, worst guys in the U-boat service...my reaction is now to any "Aircraft Spotted" is dive. :lurk:

my reaction is that too...but to a "seagull spotted" it would be "man the shotguns!!!!" (an option like that would ROCK! :D). A seagull can $hit over your sub, but I doubt it can carry a 250lb depth charge :rock:.

And I don't know how seagulls taste after cooked, but there's always the chance to get a nice addition of bird meat in the next officers' dinner ;)

The whales heat placton or krill, the same of some fishes.
this could attract some seagulls like a fishing boat.

could be the seagulls think that the sallow u boat is a whale or there are some fishes near the hull.

the sea life some times is important for the navy,

whales are detected by sonar and some placton have a faint green light at night in the wake of a ship, that could be detected by a special light detector.

Whaling Captain said they eat seals, fish, dolphins, birds anything they can fit in their mouths - btw that day saw this in action about 300 meters to port bow as we were returning to dock.

It "lept" (I call it flew) out - mouth open swallowed gull - crewman said it probably was an accident and was just the follow through of eating something in the water near the surface...birds not preferred but it was in the way... :huh:

Well, if we're going to climb the ladder of the "mine is bigger than your's", then I say the one who gets the 18.1'' AA round from the Yamatos will get the bigger "anti-seagull" weapon and so will win the competittion.

I would be a quite impressive sight to see, too...
I mean, for the seagull... watching a 18'' rifle exploding is something you don't see every day, but knowing the performance and results of the 18.1'' AA rounds actually fired during WW2, that thing isn't exactly healthy for the gun crew. The seagull would be quite safe, though :P

Also, we should know how long is reload time to start the appropiate "gun takes too long to reload" thread on the SHIII mods sub-forum :rock:

Sitting on a ferry going home from the mainland a few weeks ago I was reminded of the dangers that seagulls pose to desperate submariners, running out of rations. One of the cheeky little ceichs swooped down and nicked a sandwich out of the hand of a woman sitting near me. :D .
If that was my last potato for the voyage and I was on watch that would have really annoyed me. Reckon they should be shot with the largest caliber on the boat. Worth keeping the XI-1 conning tower for.

PS Journeys back home have never been the same since SH....I keep getting urges to tell the captain not to sail so straight without changing course :lol: .
