Holy moly! :o That sure packs a wallop. The sub would probably go spinning like a top if those guns fired to one side or the other. That would sure be nice to really stick it to those DDs, though. :lol:

It works, but only for non-player boats.

Just go to the eqp-files in data/submarine/yoursubmarine typ, and change the "Linkname" entry for the Deckgun.

You can use every guntype in SH3. To find their names, go to the eqp-files in data/sea/randomship, for example NCL-Hipper, and there out of NCL-Hipper.eqp the gun-entry "8InchDoubleT".

But now you mention it, it could be another add-on for the British submarine idea, even if it is only AI. :up:

Wasn't the whole concept of a cruiser submarine fundamentally flawed? I mean, one hit to the pressure hull and the submarine's crippled. Surface combat is probably best left to surface ships. Maybe the Surcouf and other simiular types had heavily armored hulls...?

the design could be improved mounting the flakboat AA guns in a modified bridge. :rock:

could be the destroyer boat.


also i remember a mod for sh2 that allow the biskmark dive like a submarine... :roll:

Open in data/submarine/NSS_Uboat9b the NSS_Uboat9b.eqp (for example the Type IXb boat).

You will find the entry:

;deck mount
[Equipment 3] (number of equipment)
NodeName=M01 (position on the 3D-model)
LinkName=105mm_UDeck_Gun_High (name of gun-model to be placed here)
StartDate=19380101 (self explaining)
EndDate=19441231 (dito)

At the "LinkName"-entry, you can use every gun or equipment the program has.
Just change it to "5InchDoubleT" and the boat will be armed on this position with the 5 inch Double Turret (the gun the Somers destroyer is equipped with).

The several names of the guns can be found in the corresponding eqp-files of the different ships. Just open any *.eqp file in data/sea/anyship (for example NBB_Bismarck) and copy the gun entry you would like to have on your boat, to the Linkname entry in NSS_Uboat9b.eqp.

Some examples:
8InchDoubleT = HipperGuns
4InchSingleT = Flower-class-Gun
37mmTSA_UFlak_High = 37 mm M42 Double AA gun
6InchTripleT = Fiji-gun
4_7InchDoubleT = Tribal-Destroyer-gun
4InchDouble = Hunt Destroyer-gun
DCRack = Depth Charges
REF_small = Search Light

Everything works, even such crazy things like arming the Elco-Boat with the 15" turrets from bismarck... :roll:

Something more serious:
I was experimenting with the Elco/Schnellboot to make torpedoboat-attacks on ships possible and armed them with the 6inch secondary gun from the Revenge-battleship. That gun has no turret and nearly disappeared in the 3D-model of the Schnellboot, but was still able to fire and 6 boats managed to sink a Dido-Cruiser... ;)

the brit M1 sub had one 12 inch naval gun on the for deck faired in to conning tower..the trick of it was that the sub could actually target AND fire the gun thru the periscope actually at periscope depth..just the barrel of the gun sticking out of the water ..but they all seemed to suffer from reliability problems ( and the M1 was just allways on the verge of "capsizing" even without provocaton from exterior forces!)
seems allso that a lot of the issues that caused cancellation of the cruiser types were finacial and political and due to treatys restricting the size of submarines..AFAIK?

what do the names in the SUBMARINE folder correspond to as far as what the IN GAME sub names are..

for examplel im in an IXD, but there is no boat called that in the SUBMARINE folder

If Surcouf's hull was heavily armored it wasn't heavily armored enough. If I remember correctly she was sunk by collision with a small steamer. Here's a pic:

The boats do not fire, because they have no AI for doing so. Maybe, the guns can be added functionally to the boats of the Harbourmod.

I finally get the gun added to my own boat. It aims at the selected target, but of course it neither fires, nor can be worked by the player.

I think it is nearly impossible to geht this gun working for the player boat. There are simply no routines in the programm that make it firing as your gun. The only possibility is to use the model, textures and properities (damage) of the 5 Inch gun (or any other gun) for the subs deck guns.

The problem is, that they got nearly unlimited "torpedo"-ammo. Maybe it can be done with two different loadouts, so that only boats used for scripted ship-attacks are armed with this weapon. Nevertheless, the position of the mount has to be changed, so that the gun is no more visible.

Yes. It is indeed possible. But there is no spot for the second deck gun on my AI boats yet unless you put it instead of AA gun on the conning tower.

From a standpoint of true history, I agree with you.....however, not unlike the Type XI sub they were talking about (which I must admit I know very little about), this shows that it is possible to have MANY different combinations...and if there was a U-Boat with 2 105mm guns on it, and it can be modeled at least somewhat, then I'm all for it!

(PURISTS CLOSE YOUR EYES!! :o )Not only that, but I'm thinking of doing some modding in an altered reality based on some of the Hearts of Iron II games I've been playing, so this thread is perfect for those ideas....now, its a matter of making them happen, which means I must learn hex string! :doh:

Ultimately, I would like to see what is possible, then decide what or what not to use, no matter how outlandish an idea may seem at first!

If I remember right there was a few subs made with types of gun close to those . The French had a few and they saw combat in the Pacific fighting the jap Navy around 1940, With the free french and with the British as they took over the subs.

Also the Germans had a couple that where acuired when they took France , but they where used as traning boats. I do not remember the class though and I will see if I can look them up and see what they where called.

also they only had on set of guns on the deck in front of the tower , and not on the rear deck.
