View Full Version : Is there a mod for (WO) goes to bridge automatically
Is there a mod for the (WO) to go to the bridge when surfacing automatically . Im sick of doing it manually . This is my only pet hate in SH3 now .

No, unfortunately not.

You really don´t need him on the bridge, even when it´s manned with only two sailors the sighting distance is as good as with a full green bar. I know that´s not realistic, I just wanted to let you know... :)

Has this been tested out?
Is this true under all weather conditions?
So the green efficiency bar for the watch crew is pretty much irrelevant?
I seem to get the distinct feeling during the game that the more people on watch, the better. And the WO usually bumps the efficiency bar to maximum or close to it.
:-?
checking out the sensors cfg in the data/cfg folder the visual "sensor" for the bridge crew is set as stock to ignore the crew effieciency for some reason....so it may make no difference at all....tho it's not easy to to be convinced about that...
must admit i changed the settings (ala some of the corresponding thread about visual spotting range etc) to this and changed the efficiency rating to true instead of false..

i feel the same about the watch officer not automatically going to the bridge after diving and resurfacing ...
tho getting a good few crew and petty officers with the watchman qualification and medals etc..to boost there effeciency will give you a full green bar even without the officer...
realy the trick here would be to edit the visual sensor a little to boost the range slightly to compensate either way....(been run down by too many destroyers in bad weather when i can quite clearly see the ship but the lookouts don't give the ship spotted message even as we collide...i'm usually in the sonar room tracking the contact trying to guage the distance by the volume etc..this is in V1 of the game where the sonar guy doesn't respond to the track contact order)

Has this been tested out?
Basically yes. I´ve tested it with different crew configurations and different ships. The results where consistent, +/- 50m.
Is this true under all weather conditions?
There shouldn´t be a difference. I´ve only tested it with perfect weather, the ships were more than 8km away and I´ve waited until they were spotted. Min green or max green, it made no difference.
So the green efficiency bar for the watch crew is pretty much irrelevant?
I say yes. There´s this "...uses crew efficiency" setting in sensors.cfg. It´s set to false for Visual and some others. Hydrophone for example is set to True.

If you are running on the surface, without your WO topside, and a ship is spotted, who reports it? I'm not sure about now, however, in earlier versions of this game, the correct answer would be ''nobody.'' Yea, thats right, no WO = no sighting report. Even to the point of actually running into another ship! Yes, I had two or three collisions at sea because I had forgotten to send the WO topside and I was'nt on the bridge either. What was that noise? Why are we taking on water? Somebody get a bucket!!!

The rest of the lookouts, you don´t need the WO to get a ship report. That´s a fact. Collisions with a ship mainly happen when there´s bad weather and you use time compression. Sometimes even without TC, but then is has to be very foggy.

So, essentially, the Watch Officer on deck is useless?

Yes.

Well, then I'm not giving him any more rations. Let him starve! :shifty:

Don´t be so heartless! :) He´s very useful when you give him the gunner and flak qualifications.

Actually I thought that the sailors and petty officers only said 'ship spotted' (or 'schif gesichted' or however it's spelled :P ) and nothing else. A few seconds later the WO chimes in with 'ship spotted, bearing xxx, long range!' etc. So the watch officer serves some purpose, but not very much then?
Also, when standing on the bridge I've noticed that the sailors/POs only scan in a certain angle in relation to where they are standing. Are you sure that they will spot ships that approach 'behind their back' if you only have one or two sailors on the bridge? The WO does a full 360 when scanning, though.
Interesting thread...

Gizzmoe and The Avon Lady:
Im wonder if this setting in sensors, "Visual uses crew efficiency=true ;[true or false]" can have something to do about it? If set at "false" as stockgame, then the green bar perhaps doesn't have any function. They spot what they should (about 8 km). If set to "true" then maybe the green bar can have a function?
Logically full green bar=8 km, less green bar, less sightinig. Then this WO makes sence to me. (sighting better with WO). Just a wild guess! Somebody that have tried with the "true" setting?
Without the Watch officer on deck you can't give orders to the bridge crew to man the guns.

True, but you can still double-click on the deck-/flak gun from crew control to man them.
Still I like to have an officer on the bridge for telling me the bearing and distance to nearest visual contact.

That´s right, he gives you the bearing and range to the ship.

When there are only two sailors on the bridge and a ship comes in from behind they don´t say "ship spotted". It appears on the map and TC drops, so technically speaking it was spotted, but they don´t say it. When you put a third lookout on the bridge also ships directly behind you will be spotted and you get the "ship spotted" message. I don´t know if you need the fourth lookout for a real 360° scan.

Somebody that have tried with the "true" setting?
I haven´t tried it. I also think that "false" somehow makes sense. Just imagine your WO or your specialised petty officer gets killed in an attack, that could literally mean that for the rest of the patrol your inexperienced lookout crew can´t even spot a battleship that´s only 200 meters away... :)

Can for sure be that way. Im now trying a patrol with "true" setting on watchcrew. I deliberately exhausted my watch pettyofficer so lets see what happens!
you will not get a bearing or distance without the WO up there, only "ship spotted" so its better to have him up there or else sometimes you have no idea the spotted ship is.. ESPECIALLY is bad weather or at night.
