View Full Version : Radio contact frequency

Does anyone know how to adjust the frequency of radio contacts mentioning convoys? I'd like my patrols to be geared more towards the convoys instead of single merchants, especially as the war progresses.

Convoy contact reports have to be adjusted individually for each convoy in the RND layer.
If you'd like to eliminate the single merchant reports set "Display Range To Opportunity Radio Contacts" to zero in the Contacts.cfg.

I see. What does "contact automatic report (min)" mean? Is it the amount of time it takes for the first report of the convoy to be generated?

BUMP
the number is the amount of minutes before it sends a radio report abut the convoy..according to the percentage probablility in the next window..
i personally altered all the convoys (for my own preference) in the campaign to 1000 minutes and 20% probablity of a message
meaning every 1000 minutes theres a 20 % chance i'll get a contact report about this convoy...IF it is within the range as set in the contacts cfg (i believe as all contact messages seem to refer to shipping that is reachable from my current location)
that's my intepretation of it...maybe other details to take into account but this seems to be about the size of it
i need all the help can get lol...for whatever reason the map in my version of the game (un-patched) is just that...a map...no contacts or sightings ever appear marked on the map at all so i really so have to work it out by dead reckoning..and guess work...and besides radio traffic that's dynamic and accurate and gives info on shipping is allways welcome in the game..allways a pleasant surprise to be informed of a convoy nearby just when your fed up of patroling an area evenn if you don't actually find it...( lost quite a few nearby convoys because even with the grid speed and direction it's still a job to find some of them due to the lack of an exact lat long reference within the grid)
i'm glad that for whatever reason i dont get any reports or ships appearing on the map ..(i havent modded the mapp screen at all)
as the map screen in SH2 used to get on my nerves..not for any great realism trip just for the fact that with automatic marks on the map and ship icons etc etc it was actually possible to play the game allmost entirely from the map screen ...i like the fact that in SH3 as is on my system the map -quite literally- is just a map...no information shown at all other than the ports ....bags of room for human (mine) error

I don't know how you have acheived this accidentally, CB (good initials, by the way), but you can do this by tweaking the contacts.cfg. I have it so that I get radio messages, but no map marks, which like you, suits me just fine.
There is a thread about this somewhere.
Cheers Clive yup my intials cover a lot terrirory from Italian midgets subs to american military engineers lol bit of luck really considering the game!
strange thing about the map is that it has been "un-sullied" by contact reports ship icons etc from the moment i installed the game...lol...at first i was a little worried about it (with a sort of insecure what else isn't working then?.. attitude) but after a few patrols i realised that it was exactly the way i wanted it to be...remembering SH2 and all the endless irritation i had with the map screen fussing about with ship convoy icons contact reports etc..really detracted from the beauty of the game..too much information on one screen ...
i like the map to be just a map...very much encourages a depth to it all...maps are fascinating all by them selves .. it's nice not to have the atmosphere spoiled by "animations and cartoon icons" cropping up all over the screen..means i miss a lot of convoys even when in the same grid as they are due to lousy navigation or bad luck (yu dont know where in the grid the shipping is just that it there heading south (or whatever) and it's travelling at such and such a speed....if go to the north of the grid and the ships are at the south of it then they're gone ..it feels right..and keeps my tonnage down to a acceptable level...if i start getting more than the tonnages on the aces screen then i lose interest as i can say without any doubt at all that if by some weird hapenstance i woke up tommorrow as a u-boat commander during WW2 i woud be going home with at most one or two ships and feeling dang happy to be alive.when i find a fat convoy i choose the largest ship i can get a bead on ,fire a full spread of torps at it and then get the heck outa the way....lol i like to have that degree of imagined "realism" available to me when i play.. :ping:
i bought "Soldiers" the other day and installed it and started the german campaign only to be told i was Germanys' fore most tank commander and most decorated hero..i just uninstalled it immediately...lol can't stand that stuff...why can we not play as an ordinary run of the mill (if there ever was such a thing) tank commander....why does it allways have to be germanys most decorated hero ......pah not me guv'!! :stare: :-j

I totally agree about how fascinating maps are just on their own. One of the best buys I ever made was a 1936 RAF map of the south coast of England - boy, the country looked different then - what a small little town London was! Hey, and we still had a rail network. Whereabouts in the UK are you?
Speaking of realism, one of my little tweaks (I use the mod enabler for everything now) is to get rid of that stupid 'we have been detected, sir' wav file. How the hell does he know? Now I have to keep my beady eye on the escorts all the time.
Do you delete the file or just replace it with a 0 byte one? And which file is it?

If you are talking about the 'detected' wav, I replace it with a silent file - I can send it to you if you like.

good idea about the detected wav...mind you i've been rammed once or twice at perscope depth only to hear we've been detected message AFTER we've been rammed LOL...not before lol..so i must admit i'm relatively ok with it (adds a little humour somtimes !)
i'm in Chester (for my sins..not very fond of the place i must admit ..it's ok to visit/ roman remains the cathedral castle the river etc/ but living here is to my mind not much fun... :damn: very competitive atmosphere for some reason..
