CCIP,

I see you doubled the enemy fog factor in the latest RUb. I'm curious, what does this do?

Well, you might've noticed this, but often in thick fog you get the "we're under attack!" message before you know it, and when you jump to the bridge all you see is some DD bearing down on you, guns ablaze, 300m away :dead:

After tests, I've concluded that even without radar, they see you from beyond visual range. This is not realistic. Although the sub generally has the visual advantage on its' side due to low profile, even in the thick fog and the most unexpected encounters the sub and ship should at least have equal chances of spotting each other.

I tried making the WO more efficient, but he just starts seeing through the fog. So, I settled on making the ships a bit less efficient in fog.

In theory, what this means is that in thick fog, you and the enemy ship should see each other at about the same time. In practice? I hope that's roughly what it works out to in practice. The testing is kind of sketchy, unfortunately, since it's not always immideately obvious who saw who, and when. :hmm:

Speaking of fog. I'm in my first mission of a fresh camapaign with RUB 1.43. 1943 in a type IXC Heading north off Dakar in pretty heavy fog, medium seas, watch crew maxed out, speed about 6knots.
Ship sighted message from bridge. A destroyer heading west at high speed crosses my bow about 300-400m I call crash dive hard right rudder. The type IX dives like a pig so it takes forever to get under. I keep an eye on the outside view(f12) just to see what happens but he keeps going. Never saw us.
This latest version of RUB is great so far.

That's great to hear, Hemisent! I was hoping it'd stop these constant fog kills (they were really annoying me before). :)

Hi CCIP!

U have found a way to get rid of that Fogattack desasters for UBoats???

I mean, i am running in thick fog at a Convoy, 400 meters is the sight for me, but every time i get closer the DDs spot me through the Fog!

Unbelievebal, but the game has so dramatic unrealistic programming errors inside....

Did u make a Mod for that problem?
Where can i download that?
Is it a standalone Mod or included with RUB?
If yes, so which files are changed and witch values.... so i can do this bymyself if it is not anything with Hexvalues.....

Thank u al ot for support! :)

Best wishes Sale

It's not really much of a mod, but it seems to work.

It's in RUb, but... it literally changes just one number in a simple config file.

Just go to data/config/sim.cfg:

[Visual]
Detection time=0.5 ;[s] min detection time.
Sensitivity=0.01 ;(0..1) at (sensitivity * max range) we have a double detection time.
Fog factor=2.0 ;[>=0]
Light factor=1.0 ;[>=0]
Waves factor=1.0 ;[>=0]
Enemy surface factor=400 ;[m2]
Enemy speed factor=15 ;[kt]

Fog factor used to be at 1.0 instead.

If you don't like the results with 2.0, you can always change it yourself a bit. Just remember - the bigger the number, the less likely they are to see you :)

Seems like the fog problem is slowly coming around. Now if only someone could mod the weather to make it snow. Imagine snow, ice, blinding blizzards while trying to hit a convoy on the Murmansk run. Oh well, maybe with the "Expansion Pack" :huh:

I think fog is effectively and practically fixed with CCIPs improvement. I died today March 1 '40, when I was surface attacking a convoy in 15m seas heavy fog. DD blasted me from about 75m distance, his first shot was at 75m I mean. In stock version he would have seen me before I saw him, for sure.

That`s right!

Thanks a lot for this tip!

Now a big realism problem is solved...... the fogissue....

:)

I think there is an similar problem with the night surface attacks....

The DD see me at 5000m running on the convoy in a really dark, clear night!

But thta`s another storie...
