Man dies after 49 hours of computer games :o

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- A 28-year-old South Korean man died of exhaustion in an Internet cafe after playing computer games non-stop for 49 hours, South Korean police said Wednesday.

Lee, a resident in the southern city of Taegu who was identified only by his last name, collapsed Friday after having eaten minimally and not sleeping, refusing to leave his keyboard while he played the battle simulation game Starcraft.

Lee was quickly moved to a hospital but died after a few hours, due to what doctors are presuming was a heart attack, police said.

Lee had been fired from his job last month because he kept missing work to play computer games, police said.
Computer games are enormously popular in South Korea, home to professional gamers who earn big money through sponsorships and television stations devoted to broadcasting matches.

Somewhat O.T.

In before its moved :know:

Very sad to hear. Im sure he had other health issues. Most humans would pass out or collapse into a coma before they "Died from exhaustion".

He could of at least choose a good "current" game.

Edited to add:

Evidently its a Europian thing [Warning questionable content in the headers] http://www.weirdspot.com/index.php/weblog/boy_dies_of_stroke_after_playing_computer_games_fo r_12_hours_non_stop/

He obviously never heard of Phidippides and the battle of Marathon.

Phidippides was again called upon to run to Athens (26 miles away) to carry the news of the victory and the warning about the approaching Persian ships. Despite his fatigue after his recent run to Sparta and back and having fought all morning in heavy armor, Phidippides rose to the challenge. Pushing himself past normal limits of human endurance, the reached Athens in perhaps 3 hours, deliverd his message and then died shortly thereafter from exhaustion

Game with moderation, at all times. The advices to get up and stretch a few muscles every hour, are not that silly. :shifty:

I am not at all impressed by this news.
I died within 4 hours after I started to play SH III at 82% realism...

I think that I have heard this story a while ago already! I'd say that this is an urban legend!

Hmm, Is this an old story or a recent one, as I have heard of this happening to someone before who was either playing counter strike or starcraft.

Anyway, you should not die because you stay awake for 48 hours should you? That said, he may have been awake a long time prior to this stint. I think people do suffer more quickly from lack of sleep than lack of food or water. I hear you will die more quickly from lack of the former.

I used to routinely pull "all nighters" if I had a deadline. Once, I did 72 hours, and having got my work in, went out for beers afterwards but I felt VERY VERY sh*t. You certainly "feel" the strain in your chest and you generally fell tired etc, but you can get a "second wind".

I havent pulled that kind of thing in ages though, I dare not, now I am older.

Many people work long shifts, some younger doctors, very long periods.

Interesting subject though, I would be inclined to think he had an underlying heart condition maybe.

Also, sleep is important for physiological as well as psychological reasons. When you are asleep, your lymph drains from your lower body, the immune system recovers and all sorts of other things happen.

The guy probably went for 100% realism and immersion...
Or perhaps he had a dangerous mix of games.

when i was at Choate Rosemarry Hall earlier in the summer, i met a Korean kid who told me that people there play in cafes with little/no sleep and eating nothing but noodles and drinking nothing but soda and energy drinks. this can go on for 12 hours, a day, or he said a kid did it for like 28 hours and fell asleep.

but yea, thats insane.

I see it clearly now. The press must like Starcraft. Had it been Everquest it would have been all over the headlines. I will have you know I played Everquest and Dungeons and Dragons (or AD&D) before computers were popular and the press was there to point out how AD&D turns people into demented zombies (which Everquest seems to do as well). Funny how these things don't happen when playing other games of the same type. Recently the bad game of the moment is that Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas. It is like having a gun. It ain't the guns fault someone else got killed, its the genius that did the pointing and pulling that caused the deaths. Some folks play chess, checkers and card games waaay to much but you never hear about those because that isn't sexy.

No no no.. It only took the hacks 24 hours to crack the SF protection. In spite of SF's claims.

Looks more like a Urban legend to me. This story has been around for a few years now and keeps resurfacing bout every year. First ive seen it on the net was about 5 years ago and i think then it was a japanese counterstriker.

Funny that people think everything put on the net is true.

It's actually not urban legend, but it does happen fairly often, at least in Korea. There was a guy a year ago who went through about the same thing, but he lasted longer. And a month or two ago a Korean couple left their infant child at home while they played WoW at an internet cafe and came home a few hours later to find the child dead.

There was another one i read about 2yrs ago about a korean gamer that died at his keyboard playing Diablo 2 for 26hrs. I also read (and a game i play often) about the First person shooter created by the American army called Armericas army, no guesses there, but anyways, one dedicated americas army clan got so annoyed at a person/persons cheating on there server that they hunted them down in the states and beat them up!

Dont cheat when playing Americas Army!

i can't wait till vr comes out and becomes mainstream over there...

.. and over here as well.

imagine if we were playing SH3 'inside the game', in vr, as opposed to being relegated to watching it from a third person perspective, on a flat 2D screen...

and then add the explosion and pain interfaces to the vr setup, and i'm sure you're gonna see a lot more war casualties popping up :-j :-j :-j

I would advise game producers to put liability warnings on their products to escape expensive litigation in the future.
Something like:
Gaming can seriously endanger your health!
or:
Continuous gaming without interruptions to sleep, relax and eat can cause sudden death!
Then the problem is solved.
