SH3 Commander is an excellent tool, but I guess there's an obvious danger of decorating your men like X-mas trees, thus producing an uber-crew that makes the game boring. I've created unwritten rules for myself in order to make the crew improvements seem deserved - for instance, no iron crosses or other major medals for the entire crew unless we sink a major warship, only allowing an extra crew qualification if we sink 40000 tons or more, and the like. How do the rest of you handle this?

I manage as thus:

- U-Boat war badge for all crew religiously after two completed patrols. This is based on what I've read about the historical criteria for this badge;

- U-Boat front clasp for all crew religiously after the first completed patrol WHERE at least ONE ship has been sunk AND only after 15 May 1944 (when the clasp became available). The one ship sunk loosely models the "close combat or demonstrated courageous service" aspect required to be awarded the clasp (remembering we're talking post May '44, so sinking anything could be considered courageous ;));

- EK2 for all crew after sinking 50,000 or more tonnes in a single patrol.

- If any individual stands out in a patrol (ie performed at least one act of bravery, or undertaken actions above and beyond the call of duty), they may be lucky enough to get an EK2. I usually base this on how much they've annoyed me in the crew management component. Or, if I get damaged and my repair officer gets me home again, he usually gets one.

-I let my radio room guys acquire appropriate qualification after a few patrols, but that's generally about it (I use the RUb 1.43 crew configs).

I've never awarded, nor will I ever award, any medal higher than an EK2. Simple reason, from what's I read on various websites covering such things, these medals just weren't awarded that frequently to anyone but the commander.

Hehe. The actual LI I use in my WaW campaign was the first non-commander to be awarded the German Cross in Gold :)

I don't think the overwhelming restrictions are neccesary to build into the Commander, but discipline is good. Perhaps giving us a limit on the number or type of awards we can give based on tonnage is something to consider... but that's kind of what SHIII already does anyway.

i do only award XL and XXL medals to my Officers and Mates, officers first.
The Lords only get to have the two small Uboat frontmedal decorations

otherwise, no discipline- Watch officer and Hydrophone Man get to have the Biggest Medals first. :oops: to give unlimited endurance :oops:

i LOVE to have an uber crew by 1944 :rock: so i dont have to worry about fatigue, and can bust em "Tommies" and "Yankees" real good. :-j :arrgh!: :rock:

If stamina weren't tied to medals i'd adopt the similar standards, but since they are tied, everyone on my boat has a full set of them.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the medals and crew qualifications awarded thru SH3 Commander simply eye candy? I recall a reply by Beery a while back noting that they were still working on this area but as of now the are strictly for show. Only the awards given thru SHIII actually have a bearing on gameplay. I really hope I'm wrong on this guys.

Hi!

Medals in the stock V1.4 cut back on the extent to which your crewmen are affected by fatigue by decreasing the maximum fatigue level for each medal awarded. This amount is governed by the "DecreaseFatigueMax" variable in BASIC.CFG.

You will probably need to ask Beery if/how he has changed this for RUb. I personally use RUb but with my own fatigue settings.

Well, I assign some qualifications more freely than i the game, but for the other stuff it`s simple: you get only inf you deserved it. Whichi means that, in practice, only Officers have some chance of beeing awarded with Crosses.
Oh, one special case was the mechanic that literally saved our lives - gave him IC for obvious reason.

Personally I`m using not RUb base fatigue - it was too problematic to handle when on really LOOONG patrols on IX c and D2 subs.
I`d like to make, finally, a kind of repeat of the longest patrol made by a Kriegsmarine Commander - and this would mean that I should make 225 days in my D2 on ONE patrol. BY the way I`m not sure if it wouldn`t be the longest war patrol ever made by a sub, wolud it ?
Now, imagine this with RUB fatigue ?
