I was creeping away from a convoy, trying to listen to the destroyers, and could not, due to the wind tunnel noise in the control room. Deleteing the ambience file sorted that out. But there is no interior sound file for the electric motors? It uses the exterior sound file for both. I'd imagine inside at slow speed, you will notice the soft hum of the motors but not the prop noise, surely not in the control room? Does anyone have a quiet e-motor file?
Rulle34 has made a soundmod for the e-motors.
I like that one very much.
You can get it here:

If the noise level does not fit for you,
it is easy to change by loading the soundfile
in the windows integrated audio recorder. There
is an option for increasing/decreasing sound level.
Adjust it, save the file and you are done.

Gammel is right, Rulle34's Das Boot sound is great...I use it also..Now I can turn the volume up and not have the old E motors over power every thing . I also use the Das Boot title music along with it...they pair up very well...... :|\......You can find that in the same link Gammel gave you.....

I've heard reference to this a while back but have no idea how to access this in XP. could you give me an idea how or where to go to access the audio recorder. I too am bothered by the background e-motor noise in he control room and at the hydrophone station.
Thanks

Thanks but when I do that it lists REAL ONE PLAYER in that category.
Is this correct? Somehow I don't think so. Is something screwed up here?

It's not real player. The icon is a little loudspeaker! look if you can find it there. I think that the icon for real player shows in the same place if you have installed it (just a guess), so windows mediaplayer should be there!

To change volume (or echo) just right-click on the sound-file, and then click on 'Record'. Then click on the 'Effects' tab to increase/decrease volume.
edit: oops be sure to click on 'File' the 'Save' :)
I had to increase volume with a modded electric-motor file too.
