I have read and posted threads about having a better indication of the depth at a given location. The basis for this is from reading a book from a US Skipper O'Kane who frequently refers to the 10 fathom line when hunting his prey. This tells me that the Sub captains had a little more information though certainly not the same level that we enjoy today.

Using the same data set used in the game I have been able to crunch some numbers and produce a couple of j-pegs near the UK with contours at different levels. The first has contours at 0,20,50,100,200,500,1000. This seemed like a bit too much information. The second had contours at 0,50,100,500,1000.

Where I need help is in integrating these into SH3. I suspect they can be overlayed onto the graphic files referenced by the game. I can provide the images in almost any size (Resolution and area covered) and type (jpeg, bmp, etc). I also would like it if someone could PM me with an e-mail address so that I can send these two images to be posted on this thread (I haven't been able to figure out how to do this without my own web page which I don't have).

I would also like some feedback on what levels these should have contours at. The zero contour can be used to align land with games land.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

BT

Never mind about the PM. I was able to find a hosting service. Here are the two pictures

I had the order in the pictures switched around. The first one has the fewer contours the second one has more details. Let me know what you think. Is this a worthwhile endeavor.

Thanks,

Isn't there any numbers on these lines, showing the depth for the line, or is it marked by different colours?

In that case it can be a factor to consider so the map doesn't become to jitter!

Like this idea!

I llike this idea also. sh2 had it....I could tell my depth just at a glance on the map..I hope you can get it to work

Hi!

This is an interesting idea, but IIRC detailed bathymetric soundings like the ones used to create the map above weren't completed until well after WWII, when sonar technology had matured and moved outside the military community.

Prior to today's detailed sonar-based maps all you had were sounding charts, detailed in harbor areas and near known shoals, but generally useless to submarine commanders who wanted to know how deep they were at a specific point. Just ask the (former) commander of the US submarine San Francisco about the quality of ocean bottom maps today....

You could do it, but for the entire ocean area in which SHIII is played? That would seem to me to be a LOT of work.

Actually developing the images is pretty easy. You just download the data and run them through a matrux script routine. This 20 deg x 20 deg block took about 10 minutes tops once I figured out how to do it.

The most difficult part is importing the blocks into SH III. I haven't been able to determine how this is done.

I agree.....This is one reason why I am looking to limit the number of contours (i.e. I think it would be best to have one at 50m, 200m and 1000m). I can have as many as I would like but I think it would just take too much away from the unknown.

where can i get the das boot tipparrary song

Just go to http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/patches.html and there is SH3 Gramophone Tipperary Sound Pack with both english and Das Boot versions of "It's a long way to Tiperrary".
