View Full Version : Is it possible to have NoMapUpdate=true and contact lines?

I need to have the NoMapUpdate=true setting, to disable godlike view on the Nav Map.
However, I would like to just get back the sound contact lines.
Is this possible or a complete technical contradiction?
Try the various versions of the "assisted plotting" mod(got the original) it's part of RUB.

I've got RUb installed but even with NoMapUpdate=false, Rub didn't show the game's original black/red/green/blue sound contact lines.
Those are what I want to restore, even with NoMapUpdate=true.
Gosh don't know...I know the lines were changed to little dots around your boat and some ways out ... but no lines. I think this comes from the idea Myros had to get rid of the little tails on ship and convoy contacts and also the tails on ships you would "see" with God's eye when scope is up or on the surface. He got rid of them and it got rid of the sound contact lines too.
Better check back on some old threads. :hmm:
Edit: I see gouldj is here for a bit...he might know. Though he kind of quit SH3 temporarily.

Just for clarity, Myros changed the contact color, I eliminated the contact tail.

Again, just for clarity, Gouldjg thought of the mod and did the original version. I updated and, I would like to think, improved it as well as correcting a couple of bugs. My update is in RUb 1.42, and a version correcting a bug is in RUb 1.43.
What exactly do you want? Color? The full line? Do you want this with or without contact tail?
The contact line currently in the Assisted Plotting Mod has two dashes which should be visible, but you will have to zoom in from the strategic map view to see them.
It's done this way for two reasons:
1. Two dashes is much more visible than the original tiny, and barely perceptible dash.
2. It does not reveal the exact range to the contact.
Further, all lines are colored such that merchants are gray (you'll have to ID them using the flags) and warships are red.
The contact lines will only appear when you have a contact other than visual, specifically on sonar. When you see the contact the line disappears. This is because the lines show for contacts considered to be "imprecise". As soon as you have a "precise" contact, the line will disappear, yet if you follow the bearing and range to the contact and click on its location you will get a circle around the contact with information about it. You must not be zoomed in so far that the protractor is visible (this is called symbol zoom).
You must have map updates turned on to see the lines. The config files have been changed such that you will not get a "Realism" penalty for turning on map updates.
In a way, I feel like Beery defending his fatigue mod. I suggest you try the 1 minute version of the Assisted Plotting mod which can be found at the link below, or at terrapin's site:
http://rapidshare.de/files/2955414/Ast_Plot_Versions_v1.7z.html
If you still can't see the line, let me know. I can make the dashes bigger, but if realism is your goal, I am very reluctant to change it such that you get full length colored lines (show's exact range). It gives entirely too much info. You might as well use the original version that shipped with SHIII.
Sorry Observer, couldn't remember who did what with the map mods. It's really fantastic, you (and Myros and gouldj) did great work, and it's more realistic than either the stock god's eye or no map update at all.

No.
If that's the case then nothing will help. As a WaW team member, I'm obligated to play with NoMapUpdate=true.
So the rest is academic. Or did I still misunderstand something?
Observer, did you put the right link up? I installed it and get almost the same look (I had previously installed gouldj's original version) as the default?? :-?
I use the mod installer and removed the old AP version before installing yours.
Full regular sonar contact lines and ship icons (just the colours gone). Will try Terrapin's site now just letting you know.
Edit: I can't find it on Terrapin's site, all I find are the original versions by gouldj. :stare:

The link I posted is a companion for RUb 1.42. Do you have this installed? If not I can post the full thing.

No problem. It does get a bit confusing at times doesn't it? :D
Oops, no I thought of that afterward, don't have RUB installed. I'm a buffet kind of guy rather than ordering a set menu. :) Would be nice if you could post the full version as I find the original sonar lines too faint. Thanks.
