Nice amout of info there, and some nice pictures of the platforms.
Im thinking about getting into Harpoon, any advise?
I'm looking at it too.
What is the name of the American stealth sub? It's black and kind of flat. Saw it on Discovery channel of something.

I just downloaded the demo. Not too impressive. Not like DW :(
Harpoon 4 which Ubi cancelled would have been awesome.
Still, the though of commanding a SSBN and trying to get into firing position undetected and launching a nuclear strike is appealing.

Been a long time Harpoon player. There is really no comparison between H3 and DW. DW is a simulator where the player is in command of a single platform, by controlling its major stations. H3 is more of a task force/fleet level simulator where the player can control multiple platforms and units as part of a whole operation. Instead of concentrating on the mission of one ship, you could command something as large as a whole Carrier Battle Group as well as other assets in the theatre of operations.
H3 doesn't have a 3d display but the main interface is modeled after real navy combat information displays.
H3 may not have the graphics of DW, and certainly has a steeper learning curve :damn: , but I would consider it a step up from DW in the complexity of its game play. I don't play these type of games for the graphics anyway. They are nice though :D
Both are good at what they do. They just do different things.

Funny, I just re-installed my Fleet Command last night and played a few games. I had forgotten how addicting this game can be and didn't notice the time fly by.
How does Harpoon compare to FC? It sounds very interesting. Is it more accurate in terms of weapons / sensor performance / etc? And how does it stand in terms of playability?
Anyone know if Sonalysts have any plans for FC in the future? If they expanded DW.. it could turn out to have an FC feel to it, if you know what I mean (which is not necessarily a bad thing)

It was not my intention to act as a Recruiting Sergeant for Harpoon :arrgh!:
As a long term Harpooner I confess that since SC and DW came along I 'play' rarely.
Harpoon is slow and can be complex but I prefer the adrenalin charge of our superb and very deep combat simulator.
I have been playing SC for three years and now each day DW rings new challenges/discoveries/tricks/tips.
A buzz no other game or simulation can match.
Fleet Commander is Harpoon Lite and more 'fun'. Harpoon 3 is the more complex and accurate simulator.
Nice if SA combined FC and DW to produce 'Total Sea War' Ocean's DID flight sim Total Air War allowed
the player to sit in an AWACS and control the tactical battlefield (FC) and at any point
jump into 3D in an operational pilot seet role.(DW)
''Just one small step.....'' he said with irony.

You thinking of the Sea Shadow?

i was going to say nearly all subs are designed to be stealthy no need to try make them undetectable by RADAR :D

Does Harpoon 3 have ANY visual representation of vessels, aircraft or subs other than dots on the map?
thanks
Not really, it's more of a strategic look at the battle area. It has some rudimentary video overlays of various actions, like: weapon launch, aircraft launch/landing, point defense (ciws (sp)), weapon impact, etc... It also has a very extensive database with pictures and such. The majority of game play is conducted while viewing icon representations of your force. These can be true NTDS symbols or stylized icons that look like the unit they represent.
It's a good sim.

Much of the action takes place on 'Aegis' - like screens using NTDS military symbols.
The important thing is that the real-world tactical and strategic battlefield performance is modeled accurately. 3D is eye candy.
I hate to dissappoint SA but I rarely use 3D and, as with many sims I largely ignore those 'expensive' bits of introduction spin.
Here's a page with some info and screenshots (scroll down):

FWIW, all this remeniscing about a sim I used to play a lot... I just ordered the sim (again - after several moves, don't have the original CD).
I used to have Harpoon classic, way back when i had a commodore amiga. :88)
And i loved it for the realism, vast amout of units and its epic sea battles.
Its not a sim but a wargame. Harpoon 3 looks v-intresting.

'Classic' is a wargame, H3 is a sim:-
Intro. to H2
'' We sacrificed a lot of glitz and eye-candy in order to craft the finest simulation of its kind.
At over a million lines of source code, this product surpasses many of the classified military simulations available today....''
Carl C. Norman Project Manager.
Although H3 raised the game there is still a devoted active following for Classic now updated by AGS.
Its a good entry point to the series - still on my HD less intense and serious than H3 but a lot of fun.

I am seriously contemplating getting H3, but the interface sucks! It looks like a game I played in the early 80s
Nothing compares with DW, but it would be nice to have the extensive database that H3 has.
I long to pilot a Soviet Hotel boomer to the shores of America, just to see if I could make it undetected..... then surface to launch my R-13s :arrgh!:
