View Full Version : Limiting max speed when using the snorkel
I have read that U-boats could not sail above 7 knots while using their snorkel, or otherwise the masthead would break off. However, in SH3 no such speed restrictions exist. Is there a way to modify this? If ever there was something we could add to RuB, this would be a prime candidate. :hmm:
good point.
A speed may be present in the sub sim files. I don't remember seeing one though.
If not, it may be a standard modifer reducing speed by say 20% for all subs when using the snort. That would be hard to find and fix.

In the real world, a snorkel should not be used at any speed above a 1/3 bell... or 7 knots, as LukeFF suggested.. because dynamic water pressure will damage or destroy it.. it's just a big, hollow tube after all...
The same should apply to periscopes, to a limited degree, as well... due to their smaller diameter, they can withstand higher speeds... but, I don't think they could be used at a flank bell or at speeds above 8 or 9 knots..

Very interesting....I'll be banning myself from snorkel and periscope use at speeds above 9 knots. This will make things just a little more complicated and interesting.
Treeburst155 out.
Well I can't see any values that would help us to do this. The problem is that it sees snorkel-powered sailing as using surface propulsion, and surface propulsion just has a nice blanket set of values for everything. If only there was a value for water drag... :(

Darn! Well, in the meantime, I guess I'll just limit my speed to 7 knots by using the 'honor system' method.

Hello!
Don't be so upset about this.
The "honor method" is in fact the only realistic one. In reality they didn't have any "built in speed limit". They just set a speed that was in the limit of what the schnorchel could hold for.

That's true, but it would be good if your Chief Engineer warned you about running at too fast a speed with the snorkel raised. Something like, "The snorkel will be damaged above 7 knots speed, sir!

It could easily be added to the 'snorkel raised' message, although I'm not going to be adding it to RUb/SH3 Commander anytime soon, because it means adding it to 70+ files, LOL.
