Hello,
I started to play a new Campaign with the amazing GWX OneAlex Edition Mod compilation.
I like a challenge, so these will be the rules for this Campaign:
- Dead is dead. When I die, the campaign ends.
- Full realism settings. Only the external camera is allowed for filming purposes
- Manual Targeting
- No recognition manual for random merchant ships
- Attempt to abide by the historical orders in regards to the London Naval Treaty, Operating Procedures and Restrictions
:timeout:
Will this be a long campaign or will I die fairly soon?
You are very welcome to watch how I progress and to discuss it

I have to admire your cool, I've never dared to sail right into a convoy on the surface. To then mess about lining up the perfect shot is even more admirable. Just like a real ace.
To quibble, I've been told off about using "decks awash" on this forum. I understand it was too risky as it could make the boat dive suddenly, particularly if travelling at any speed. Perhaps it was correct that it gave you trouble. I've heard of allied ASW people speculating about Uboats "well trimmed down" but not from the German end.
All the searchlights on the merchants can't be right, especially when they have no guns. I believe they would not show lights under attack. There's a mod to disable the merchant searchlights which you (and OneAlex!) should take a look at. I have heard of complaints (in Middlebrook's book I think) about merchants firing starshells too much later in the war - these would make more sense, but still not a good idea.
Tonci87
01-26-23, 04:43 PM
Staying on the surface has advantages.
-Much better situational awareness
-Higher speed
-Better maneuverability
So whenever I can, I try to stay surfaced. Might have to take a look at that mod you mention.
I agree that freighters most likely wouldnīt use their lights, UNLESS they think they spotted something in the water.

Excellent episode, things are warming up nicely after a slow start. Narrative pacing would call for a couple of boring ones now...
Number of depth charges is discussed here https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=254413. Two unknowns - number carried in real life was very variable and not sure how it is captured in the game. Escorts do run out eventually but they keep up attack runs until they lose contact, which while realistic is very annoying late war.
I find going to flank speed draws escorts from across the whole convoy. They don't seem to talk to each other and if deep 4 knots is enough for dodging. More difficult in only 100 metres of water!

Another excellent episode. Wolfpack345 will have to up his game to match this. Firing torpedo after torpedo at a helpless merchant in a storm - when do you give up? We've all been there.
Despite the best efforts of the modders merchants in GWX tend to suffer in rough weather. Looks like Onealex has this old problem, I think he did mess with the ship dynamics. A little peril on the sea is OK, but not this much. Flower class corvettes are especially susceptible to sinking in storms, but IRL they were famously seaworthy. I've found that it is important to NOT enable seasonal or more severe wave height in SH3 Commander.
The east coast of Britain has a LOT of mines in GWX, although they are spread thin. I would try patrolling somewhere else or you may have a short career with a not so dramatic end.

Very funny. Long lecture about the stupidity of gun actions, followed by repeated stupidity. I like it. The "stay out of gun arc" trick only works on stopped ships.
What to do about the mines? The east coast barrier was to some extent a bluff and the thin spread of mines in GWX is probably fairly accurate. I don't know if the mines will affect you on the surface in the game, the fields laid had varying purposes as the war progressed, see https://naval-history.net/xGM-Ops-Minelaying.htm
The only work around I know is to use the periscope underwater, but this is NOT realistic. IRL you cannot see very far underwater in the North Sea.

Whilst running a plot might be realistic, is perfect plotting compatible with full realism? It all seems to assume that your boat can maintain a perfectly accurate heading and speed and plot its own position perfectly. It all works perfectly in the game...
It's also fortunate that your targets only zig zag AFTER you have attacked them.
Enjoying the different styles of you and Wolfpack345. I think you have the edge at the moment because of your greater nerd coefficient!

It will not work if the ships vary their course or speed, and I imagine it would work less well in rough weather (although I would expect a helmsman to be able to stay on course if the boat is submerged and a navigator to make an accurate plot).
I had used this method in SH5 TWOS with the real navigation mod, and it still worked, it just required me to plot my own position as well.
In the next episode I will be attacking another ship with the same method (I will do the plotting off camera though), and either because of errors in my measurements when the ship was still at a steep AOB, or because of the ship changing its speed over time I had measurements from 5,5kn to 8kn.
A significant spread.
In such circumstances I advise to use the value measured with the last observations in context with the average speed measured so far.
That is likely to give a good result.

It's a great series, the best SH3 play through I've seen. There's a real attempt to apply authentic tactics, which are all carefully explained.
However using the exterior view when the AI is fighting itself is guaranteed comedy gold. It would be more polite to look away. One day we will get a pack attack on a convoy and the insanity will hit new levels. I can't wait.

Speaking of a/c, if desired, an edit of the various airbase.cfg files would be in order if one wants more "realistic" attacks by allied air vs. your u-boat.
I.e, the squadron numbers should read "1", not "2", as the only u-boat hunting that was (sometimes) done in pairs was off of the U.S. escort carriers.

Excellent episodes as usual, I like the way you are slowly chipping away at your Kaleun's morale. What will he do if he is sent off to a training role?
However two annoying things about modded SH3 in the last couple of episodes:
GWX escorts always seem to get their initial contacts with passive hydrophones, which are super sensitive out to around 6-8km. They use ASDIC for depth charge runs only. If you watch the near contemporary film "The Cruel Sea" from 1953 you will see that escorts used active ASDIC almost all the time and it was the primary sensor, which is enough to tell you passive detection was no use beyond about 1.5km. I guess the passive function of ASDIC was used to confirm an ASDIC target really was a submarine and also when quietly waiting above a submarine that had gone deep. I think someone in the game or mod team was applying modern tactics and technology or simply made a mistake. I prefer NYGM for this aspect, it seems better to me.
The weather is too bad too often. Worse, with many mods too many ships sink simply due to the weather. I find it useful to check the wave height multiplier and seasonal effects options are turned off in Silent Hunter Commander.
Tonci87
01-17-24, 12:19 PM
I agree with you.
The passive Hydrophone on escorts seems to be a bit too sensitive at times.
Regarding the weather: Well it is winter and the weather is always worse during the winter months, and what we have in game is still very tame compared to how it can be in real life. So I canīt complain about that.

Yes, various Allied u-boat killers said/did the same thing, including to the point of never using hydrophones as it was considered obsolete tech.
Standard tactic was asdic banging away at all times. AOD handled escorts this way.
Another item in the long list of things badly in need of being changed in Sh3.

My understanding from others on this forum is that the problem with running "decks awash" is one of safety. In running decks awash you have a similar problem to maintaining periscope depth, but with a lot less margin to play with and a dead watch crew if you get it wrong. Worse, the sudden change in flow patterns from no water on deck to water on the deck would make for very unstable hydrodynamics. I guess it was possible for a good crew in calm weather but much too dangerous otherwise.
The only historical accounts I am aware of are Gunther Prien in Scapa Flow and Herbert Werner in the Bay of Biscay (in the book Iron Coffins). See https://uboat.net/forums/read.php?3,34391,34391#msg-34391 It sounds like the technique was to run with slight negative bouyancy and the planes at an up angle; but hard to see how this could be controlled, especially at high speed.
Gamewise I have no idea if decks awash actually makes a difference in game and whether it was considered when the modders were setting detection parameters. It's a bit like sneaking some unrealistic extra knots out of the boat with realistic hydroplane angles...

I strongly disagree with your comments on SH3 aircraft.
Coastal Command did indeed operate the PBY/Catalina (and also the Liberator and B17) . In fact a few months later than shown in your video it was a Catalina (being flown by a "neutral" US aviator on exchange) that regained contact with the Bismarck as it made for Brest. The PBY was famously slow, so plenty of time to dive.
The problem with a bomb is that if it is reasonably powerful it has to have a delay fuse to protect the dropping aircraft, which would mean it would explode too deep unless it was a direct hit. Depth charges replaced bombs but it was found fairly soon that using any settings other than 25 feet was a waste of time as the chances of a hit on a uboat that was below periscope depth were too small to worry about. SH3 does not capture this very well and airborne depth charges are a threat at moderate depths.
A uboat was a terrible gun platform and indeed it was found that manually aimed AA guns were incredibly bad at hitting anything. The Bismarck mounted a large array of AA weaponry (including 12 20mm flak and 16 dodgy 37mm flak) but failed to down a single biplane aircraft in two separate attacks in which the attacking aircraft got close enough to use their machine guns against the battleship. Several Swordfish were damaged, and yes some did break off their attacks. However it is unlikely that a single 20mm would have that effect, In photos I have seen of uboats under attack it is the uboat crew that are hiding from the aircraft guns.
Late war boats with many more flak guns managed to bring down slightly more aircraft than boats destroyed, but the British were prepared to accept this ratio. Most attacks would be a no-score draw. Towards the end of the war a boat that chose to fight it out on the surface was a big threat to a Swordfish from an escort carrier, but the aircraft could wait until the boat started to dive, or whistle up some Wildcats to strafe, or call up the nearest escort. Late war Swordfish were armed with rockets, which helped considerably.
Sadly there's not much that can be done for the SH3 AI. For example the Catalinas did not attack on their first pass because of a known bug with one of the highest levels of crew experience.
Having said all that, great video. Even if you were trolling for footage by not diving during the air attack.... :hmmm:

Getting closer...
Normally you are super cool in a crisis, but this time you seemed to spend a lot of time dithering instead of firing torpedoes. You then got red/green colour blindness on the AOB gauge. I love the way you get it wrong twice, once for the bow tubes then again in reverse for the stern tube shot. Then you accidentally sank the biggest ship in the convoy instead of the "meh" C3 cargo you aimed at!
I noticed the weather report changed to "excellent visibility" for a short time just after you first dived. Was there a temporary change in visibility? I didn't think that was a thing in SH3, but I've not played OneAlex.
Exciting stuff nonetheless. I actually prefer ranting at your videos to playing the game myself. More practice needed, which means posting more often :03:

You have to stop making excuses for your useless weapons officer on the TDC. i suggest you reassign him when you get back to port. You might also want to discipline the watch crew for admiring each other through their binoculars instead of looking out for aircraft.
As some have pointed out the oiler you sank first was a new US fleet oiler, seemingly operating under a Royal Navy flag https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cimarron-class_oiler_(1939). So much for US neutrality. History does not remember this ship and the brave men who died on her, or the experimental rotating VHF radar she carried.
The Irish Government allowed RAF aircraft operating from Northern Ireland to overfly their territory using the "Donegal corridor" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donegal_Corridor starting in early 1941. The Germans were not told about this.

Lockheed Hudsons. Very common early war ASW aircraft, easy to confuse with the less capable Avro Anson. I think you knew that :03:
ASV mk2 radar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASV_Mark_II_radar) was operational in large numbers in early 1941. The Bismarck was detected that way in the first Swordfish strike from HMS Victorious. As you say, radar was not likely to be used off Africa at that time, but the game equips all units of a given type the same way at a given date.
The radar was not very good initially and had a high minimum range, so was not very useful at night until the Leigh light was introduced in mid 1942. The initial tactics would be to drop a flare somewhere near the target on the first pass, then try to attack on the second pass using the light from the flare. By accident or design in game aircraft with a high expertise never drop bombs or depth charges on the first pass. So crash dive immediately!
Too frequent air attacks was a problem with the vanilla game, cleared up in GWX. Unfortunately I think OneAlex likes his aeroplanes... As you say it's not so much the frequency of encounters as the near certainty that they will overfly you (and the way they guess your depth). I'm afraid that's not something the modders can tackle.
Don't be tempted to mess with the game config files unless you are really sure you know what you are doing. I tried this in my first career and it ended when I was attacked by 12 Sunderlands at the same time!
The best solution is to surface only during the day and rely on your watch crew to allow you to crash dive. AND DON'T USE TIME COMPRESSION >256! I've found this works every time in all weathers against slower aircraft with big bombs. To be honest when in your patrol grid you can spend most of the time submerged, which is not really historically correct for this time period and location.
The other problem is with radars on warships when the visibility is bad. The warships see you before you see them, which is realistic, but unfortunately when using time compression they can sink you before you can react. So in the radar era stay below the surface as much as possible in zero visibility.
When Metox arrives you will have a brief period of freedom until centimetric radar appears!

I think the kaleun is getting tired and making errors of judgement. The old confidence is draining away. Most of the early war aces met their fate in 1941.
Hard to see anything wrong with the attack, but you did have a fairly large gyro angle when you fired and were asking for quite a lot of turning from the torpedoes at only 600m range. You also did not leave long for the torpedoes to actually leave the tubes before moving to the next target - I'm not sure exactly when the gyros are set in game.
Those midships guns on the large cargo ships have caught me out as well. Of course you had plenty of time to surface, go around and try again with more torpedoes but calm logic does not always prevail when you are frustrated with the damn game.
Just found this. Started episode 1! Looking forward to the journey!

The logic to this is a bit confusing. There seems to be a "lock on" function for the hydrophone, which is also used when pinging for range late war. It starts off tracking the nearest target but this can get overridden by selecting a target on the hydrophone screen. As you can lose this lock through angle, range and depth changes it can get a bit confused. The "report on nearest target" seems to be more reliable.
Congratulations on the latest attack. "Captain Cool" is back. Maybe playing the game at a reasonable hour is an important factor.

It certainly is!
Itīs not that easy to find time though.
But here is a new Episode, in which I look forward to seeing Brest

The game's starting to get a bit trickier isn't it. Very good choice in restricting the use of the external views when being hunted.
The CAM Hurricanes were for defence against FW200 Condors, not submarines. The mk1 Hurricanes used did not have suitable armament for use against uboats. There's a good article on wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAM_ship. On some occasions the Hurricane could head for the nearest land base rather than ditch.
In my NYGM campaign the CAM ships have an infinite supply of bomb armed Hurricanes. You never see them launched but they do appear fairly regularly near the convoy. So your caution was actually justified in the game but not in real life! However you really should have chased the convoy rather than disengage, you would have probably been in position at night.

Maybe you are right that I should have chased the convoy, but sometimes the decision to disengage leads to another opportunity

I thought you had lost interest just as the game was getting more difficult.
I used to work on jet fighters. Trying to attach instrumentation underneath a running Tornado or Eurofighter makes racing cars seem a bit meh!
No matter how quiet you are the nearest GWX escort tends to head directly for you as soon as the first torpedo explodes. Maybe it's a simple ~2km offset from the impact point? So there's not much point crawling away at 1 knot; you have to be out of ASDIC range by the time they arrive. I usually use ahead one third as a compromise. Once you had been detected on ASDIC your tactics were perfect.
I prefer NYGM as the escort hydrophones seem much less sensitive and they often have no clue where you are, so you can frequently creep away as you tried here.

I wondered why airplanes didnt always drop their bombs on the first pass. Is that a bug?
Anyway, absolutely love this series, I am now not using the recognition manual and conducting historically accurate methods of determining speeds and directions of travel. Its added a new element to the game thats been missing before. And doing some guesstimating really adds to the realism a uboat commander faced!

I understand that failing to drop on the first pass is a bug associated with a particular level of aircraft competence.
Of course there are many reasons why it could happen in real life. Before the invention of the Leigh light aircraft night attacks would involve a first pass dropping flares followed by a second attack pass.

The aircraft "AI" is not good. Even when set to Elite, they have issues with recovering from a dive. You get below Veteran, and they'll often crash after a bomb drop. The decision as to whether or not to drop a bomb depends upon the plane's approach angle to the sub's angle, and also whether they "saw" your boat, or if you might have been detected by radar. If detected by radar, but you dive in time, you will often see a single pass without a bomb drop, almost like they dropped a marker in the water (wouldn't that be nice to see??), and then they'll come back for a 2nd pass and drop, usually missing you. If they see your boat, you might get a strafing run first, then a bomb drop. It depends upon how the plane is loaded out, and if they have weapons available...

Now I'm confused. Via the readme in his scripted bombers mod, Stiebler said this about radar.
"Aircraft don t really use radar:
In the course of testing, I found something very interesting. The land-based bombers are fitted with radar from 1943 or earlier, which can be detected by the U-boat s radar receiver. They close very fast to the U-boat in a direct line. The scripted bombers also have the same radar, which can also be detected by the U-boat, but the aircraft fly along their pre-plotted path until they see the U-boat visually - not easy in darkness. I believe that actually no radar-fitted bomber uses its radar to locate the U-boat - the radar serves only to alert the U-boat in SH3. The scripted bomber flies unconcernedly on until it sees the U-boat visually - then it will attack. The land-based bomber however is generated just a short distance away from the U-boat, and is given the correct angle by the code to fly towards the U-boat. Only later does the aircraft see the U-boat lying across its path.
