this mod adds conning tower emblems with killflags and wardroom battleflags (fleetboat interior) which can be easily activated with jsgme.
the first set includes all historic emblems and battleflags for the
Narwhal and S-Class.
to activate look up your boat name/number and copy the corresponding folder into your MODS folder and activate.
same with the killflags.

Did a bit of digging & came across this bit of info:

The origin of the submarine battle flag in World War II is a matter of some speculation, because before 1942, U.S. submarines did not own or display them. During late 1942 or early 1943, however, it became customary for a broom to be tied to the shears of a submarine returning from a successful patrol, indicating that it had made a "clean sweep" or sunk everything possible. In 1944, pennants were added to the brooms to indicate the number of kills. A Japanese flag denoted each ship sunk, with a solid orange circle on a white background for merchant ships and a rising sun for warships. Occasionally, these flags were also painted on the conning tower. This spontaneous and informal practice soon evolved into the creation of larger, more elaborate pennants, which included the submarine's particular insignia, often borrowed from a crewmember's "Submarine Jacket." This emblem was sewn into the pennant, along with symbols denoting additional kills and distinctive accomplishments, as sort of a "living history" of the sub's career. During 1944, Disney Studios, already involved in designing military insignia for both the United States and its allies (as these two websites show: www.atissuejournal.com/2010/08/10/wwii-military-logos-by-disney/ and www.atissuejournal.com/2010/08/10/wwii-military-logos-by-disney/ ), also designed submarine insignia. In all, the studio designed more than 30 fish insignia, which were assigned to submarines.

From the site I gleaned this info from.. 1 of the pic's, as best as I can tell.. it looks to have the battle flag & subsequent ship's sunk (battle kill's) emblazoned on the port side of the tower.

Of course, that is just 1 pic I found.. ( found here: http://www.dutchsubmarines.com/boats/images/submarines/uss_cod_bridge_small.jpg ) & is not entirely indicative of that locality, as being the agreed upon area for them to be displayed with all subs. It could well be, that that area was where that particular sub's Capt. & crew chose to display theirs... :yep:

Btw, the positons of salmon/sargo kill flag had better to be moved downwards a little, to avoid the navigation lights.

Anthor issue:
FotRSU uses "conning_gato_02" instead of "conning_tambor_02" in "UnitParts7Tambor.upc" file, so flags&kills will not be effective for those tambor subs with medwar conning tower. However, if we edit the "UnitParts7Tambor.upc" to restore the conning_tambor_02, it will cause texture problem.(using your 4k skin mod as well). Maybe the "NSS_TamborTower_O01~04.dds" files have some problem.

did you check to edit the texture path too:

these textures refer to "hull", not conning tower. no need to edit.

later I use conning tower texture files from stock game to overwrite current ones, then both flags and tower are properly displyed.

if you overwrite all of the tambor tower files with upscaled stock ones in 4k skin mod, it can be fixed.

they only had the lightmap for Tambor Conning 2 wrong in FOTRSU 1.46
maybe thats the reason they switched to the Gato tower:hmmm:

Be aware that we have been attempting to use the correct conns on all of the boats. It is not understood why the files were the way they were, and it wasn't until a few months ago when we went to put proper gear on several of the boats (the Tambor is not the only one using the Gato_02 conn) that the swap was discovered. This was further compounded with the Salmon Sargo combo using different conns, as found by flaminus (https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=2744474#post2744474). There are a few issues with that conn also with the occlusion, but not nearly as visible. It had already been discovered prreviously that the TamborTower 02 occlusion maps were definitely "off" in FotRSU, almost like they had been shrunk - but to serve what purpose? We are currently testing all the changes, and we'll have to send vickers03 a preview of the next release because this will affect most all of his mods. There are massive changes to the Tench and another sub, which might be difficult to deal with. :salute:

Just redownloaded the mod & unzipped it...

&... :timeout: am not seeing Balao, in the line up after unzipping, vickers03, ol' chap... :06: :o :doh: :hmmm:

What I am seeing is, the following line up listed in the folder:

Gar, Gato, Narwhal, Porpoise, S class,, Salmon, Sargo, Tambor & finally... ship sunk count battleflag. That's it... No Balao in the line up there.

if needed, can do up a snap shot of the folder & post it in reply, vickers03... just wanted to let ya know. Not upset, just a tad confused... is all. :yep:

Well, this has caused me to once again uninstall TMO (my mainstay) and reload FOTRSU+interiors+whichever class boat I want my really cool markings on (and yes, I'm not being facetious - I think this is really cool). But ... FOTRSU takes so long to load up, I think I'll take a nap (my other mainstay). :) :salute:

Unfortunately it also ends up screwing up my shortcut start and even my open folder manually start every time and that'll take me a couple of days to sort. Erg. Yes, I deleted the SH4 folder before I started the MOD changeout. :(

With these heavy mods you need - ever - uninstall your SH4 and reinstall all. Another option is MultiSH4 and you will have two installations of SH4. But deactivate TMO with JSGME and reactivate FOTRSU is not recommended....JSGME is not perfect.

Also, I don't have more load time with FOTRSU than TMO. The museum, yes, is heavy in FOTRSU, but both TMO and FOTRSU load in similar times.

I ask you three questions:
- killflags appear only at port side and not starboard? (the GATO_CONNING_emblem is on both sides)
- are sampans and tugsboats to be considered as sunken merchant ships to manually update killflags?
- the files "SHIP_SUNK ..." what are they and where can they be seen?
- Can the killflags be automatically updated in the future, I don't mean in the open sea, but at least when you return to the base?
My submarine is a Gatoclass - Gato and I don't see the number but I believe it is number 212 and the activated MOD is FOTRSU 1.46.

I'm afraid I still need more detail. I don't know how to make the right example and left example rectify. I unzip the zips into the MOD folder, as usual, and I don't get what Torp gets when he activates his. What folder am I supposed to select? Am I supposed to be unzipping into that folder and not MODS?

first unzip everything in a complete different folder (not MODS). then go into the (select_folder) and copy the one you need into your MODS folder so that it looks like in the pic.

Nothing displays on the port or starboard exterior. Guessing either I screwed that up, it's not yet available or historically this boat didn't display there.

that's a FOTRSU problem (they are working on it), the Tambor uses a Gato tower so you can't see the emblem. This can be fixed by using my FOTRSU subskins in 4k mod https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=249390 or

If I kept up better when it comes to monitoring the threads I woulda known that. ;) As it is, I'm thrilled my crew has a battle flag to keep score on. Does wonders for morale (they'll have 4 more merchants to tack on if I don't score any more on this patrol.) :)

Aug. 15, 1942 - Tambor returns to Brisbane from her 1st patrol. Sunk 1 destroyer, 6 merchants and 4 small craft (2 large Sampans, 1 fishing boat, 1 crab boat).

30,729 tons.

Awarded participation trophy.

Nice... I know there is a USS Stingray one (done based off the sub in the movie, Down Periscope... *Balao class skin*) love the look of the sub skin... just not 100% crazy about the menu alterations, though. Not sure what would all need to be drop kicked out, leaving the mod still useable though... :o :oops: :timeout: :doh: or how to make sure that it was able to be used with any mod set, like... FotRS or TMO or RSRD... so... just gonna by pass that 1 in particular. :yep:

With the skin for the Tench, would love to use that Shark's mouth 1... but am not sure if all the bugs & kinks of the Tench have been fully ironed out yet, or not... :hmmm: :hmmm: :hmmm:

I know I saw something about there still being issues with it, but... BUT... I do admit that was a bit back, that I recall seeing that mentioned. haven't seen anything to indicate that the issues were worked on or fixed fully... if they can be. I know that some issues despite a modders best efforts, won't be able to be 100% fully resolved... all that can be done is to mitigate them, as best as can be. :yep:

The Tench is like the Balao, and not just in FotRSU, but anytime you get the boat too early, it trashes the game, due to so many aspects of the sub not being available, including an active home port, as WH4K found (I think it was him) because he got the boat in March instead of late August...

Yes I must admit that I cheated ... by starting a campaign to obtain the class tench in order to try this skin.
ah yes I had to think of the 4k skins which could pose problem I believe that to obtain this effect so much to seek .... it must be an integral part of the skin. Besides, the skin that I tried a while ago was built like this ... but I remember more exactly ... I would have to research

For a Tench test, just do a January 1945 or March 1945 start, and you should be able to see it just fine. The Balao would be a Fall of 1943, but I don't think I put one of those in... :hmmm: - or do a Single Mission after their effective dates...

Will need to see of grabbing the latest update for the mod... but will do so shortly.

Of note, any plans to round out the kill flags.. as I noticed there were some... gaps as to the number of kills, or would additionals need to be looked at for us users to fill in the gaps as with the Capt.'s quarters (editing them as was advised/recommended)with the interior mod, vickers03.. just asking... as I am curious to know what your thoughts are on that. :hmmm: :yep:

Ok, with the Capt.'s quarters name tag (found in the interior mod you also did), you gave info on how to go about editing that texture item... editing or rounding out this mod was where that was in reference to...

As it is, after 8 kill selection in the ships sunk folder, it jumps up from 8 to 12.. with no 9, 10, 11 in between those. Just as that is there between kills 8-12, it is also repeated yet again with a jump from 12-16 & again 16-20 & finally 20-24.

Of course, I do know & understand that, at some point in time, as a skipper, that there will be a transit from 1 sub, to another.

So, with not having 9, 10, 11, kill flags, as well as 13, 14, 15... 17, 18, 19... & finally 21, 22, 23.. would the use of the editing you outlined in the interior mod, be doable in the interim to fill in those missing kill count flags... or is it better to wait for you with a future update that includes them.? :hmmm:

(Am hoping for the latter as being done, cause I will admit... with doing the editing on the Capt.'s name plate in the interior mod... I got it done, but.. it wasn't easy...:yep: I am, Myself, more of a user of mods than a tinkerer of files & such.. think of Me as more of a... willing crash test dummy, if ya will.

If it helps advance & make things better, I'm more than happy to deal with goofs, errors, things going wrong, knowing that all of it is for a greater good... making something good, even better, vickers03 bud :up: :salute: :shucks:)

all these steps..i have so many projects now going so this will not be done in the near future, sorry.
