Here are the Sonar.wav files of all the sonars (asdic) sounds encountered in the supermods of sh3 :
-stock sh3
-ccom12
-nygm3
-gwx3
-wac5.2
-lsh2020
-gwxonealex1.39
-gwr21
Sh3 sonar sounds :

Just rename the one you prefer by Sonar.wav and copy it to paste into data\Sound from your Sh3 installation to have the same in your game :-)
Ping ping ^^
What is the most real sonar sound for you ?

I use the one from Das Boot converted for the game. Can't remember where I got it from or who made it though. :hmmm:
Have to say i love the LSH3 2020 one.
But never heard a real one on other hand :D

Perhaps it is one of the sounds in the link folder ? or another ?
if another can you post it here ? thanks

Strange, I have the opposite; the sound quality of my file is good and gwx is so-so. Probably sound card related.

100% agreed ! That puts the fear of God into ya every time especially since the escorts weren't to be trifled with vs. the cream puffs in SH3. :)

Unfortunately no
The sound files in AOD have an extension "raw"
And I'm not very sure if they could be applied in Sh3, the gameplay is different, as John said!

I don't know how but they can be extracted and used in SH3; i.e. Stiebler's "Smoke on the horizon !" sound file in his patch is also from AOD.

The sounds of AotD and CAotD can be converted comfortably with Audacity, just pay attention to the bit import value ca 11 000, the wrong value is noticed when it is too fast.

note, in Audacity go to import/raw data and then set the sample rate to 10 / 11000 Hz, you have to try it.

I set the rate to 100/11000 to get the full sound length of the file. Works perfect.
I could spend a lot of time with this ! Several AOD sounds that would be nice to have in SH3 for various functions that have no sound with them now but that would require skills beyond me to make them work in SH3.
But it converts to either .wav or .ogg perfectly. Going to try adding that "oh crap !" AOD destroyer approaching sound to replace the wimpy SH3 one.:)

Fyi, the German voice files all start with <number>G<letter>. English is the same except E for G.
I.e., the smoke on the horizon file is 6GA. The various named files are easy to figure out what does what.

Will work on it today some. I'll upload all the sound files too in case someone else wants to mess with them too. Off the top of my head some of the AOD sounds I think would be nice in SH3 fwiw:
- the notice when the boat has surfaced and is running on diesels.
- the notice when you've reached the heading you requested vs. having to look at the compass.
- the same when you've reached the depth requested.
- the torpedo dud notice.
- the approaching destroyer prop noise.
- the approaching cargo ship prop noise. These last two are great for situational awareness and for not getting run over by a cargo ship. :)
- the ship sinking sounds heard from the command room. I know SH3 has some but I've never heard them from the command room.
- the various compartment specific damage messages.

Thanks for the info!
Keep in mind sounds fille have huge impact on PC perf and memory.
In a mod, if the stock file has 4mn play, and you put a 8mn play, it’s obviously heavier!
And the more you put, the more the game can become unstable :03:
Or not...depending situations.

Here (https://www.mediafire.com/file/l44cjhhiwy5qsnl/AOD_sound_files.7z/file) are all the AOD sound files. Just over 1 mb. There are various non-sound files in the folder but I was to lazy to delete them. :)

Thanks Fifi ! I don't think these would add much as the entire sound library for AOD is the same size as one average SH3 sound file. :o
But I could be mistaken.

Thanks for the info!
Also, each voice sound is in both English and German and the naming system only differs by the letter E or G for the same file. I haven't checked all of them yet but this appears to be the case.
I.e., 1ea.raw is the same sound file as 1ga.raw.
Comes in handy when its not known what is being said in German or vice versa :)

I notice some of these must also be looped in the game as the sound file played in Audacity is much shorter vs. in the game.

Here (https://www.mediafire.com/file/7z1nhyggu5e9xqj/AOD_sounds_in_wav_format.7z/file) are some AOD sounds in .wav format to possibly add to SH3 if possible/desired. Some may require a hex edit to work with a SH3 function like I assume Stiebler did with the "Smoke on the horizon" patch he did. That is beyond my abilities. Some already have the same function in SH3 and can be used in SH3 as is. However, to use the AOD file instead you have to rename it to be the same name as the SH3 file being replaced.
The voice files enclosed are headed by their AOD name.
Here (https://www.mediafire.com/file/4fmd383yu8mhbvq/AOD_sounds_in_ogg_format.7z/file) are the same sounds in .ogg format if needed.
I've named them to hopefully be self-explanatory as to what they do.
I did not include some sounds already in SH3 that are similar, just as good imo, etc. but chose to pick AOD files that mostly don't exist in SH3 but would be good to have. Later today I will upload these and all the AOD sounds file from earlier onto SubSim's download section.
Thank you very much a-kermit for the info. that allowed working with these files and thanks to Neal for his storage help ! :salute:

Here (https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=5744) is the SubSim link to the complete AOD sound library file. I didn't upload the .wav nor .ogg format folders; anyone that uses the sound files will have their own idea of what they want to use vs. mine.
Now ericlea since we've taken this thread on one tangent, how about another; adding the various AOD video clips linked to various events in the game to do the same in SH3 ? :D

Activated the "We've been detected" soundfile and replaced it with the AOD "High speed screws sir !" file.
Figured it could simulate the sonar picking up an escort taking interest in the boat via turning towards it, etc. See how it goes.
Been researching how to add a sound via the sdl, dsd, etc. files but still a bit Greek to me and if requires hex editing an act file thats beyond me anyway.
Lots of unused SH3 sound files for that matter too.

The AOD files have that, along with when at periscope depth and others. But along with all that is needed to add a new sound to SH3 via sdl, dsd, etc. it may require working with the .exe file too.
ivanov.ruslan
10-18-21, 04:12 AM
In fact, yes, it is certain that the exe needs to be corrected
John Pancoast
10-18-21, 04:55 AM
On a related note, it'd also be nice to have the AOD patrol briefings before each patrol in SH3 vs. the world news events in SH3.
The AOD briefings are much better at relaying sub/Battle of the Atlantic info. that is actually relevant and useful on the patrol.
But that too would require hex editing, as they're tied to patrol dates, starts, etc.
Let alone the work getting them from AOD as they're not in any sort of text file format and one would have to play through a lot of patrol starts to get them, and probably miss some even then.
