Is a page where useless is posted.

Here is one of them and I hope you will contribute too.

In 1980, the Englishman Tony Hiam was stunned that even on camping trips, his brother ironed his clothes. Tony Hiam therefore decides to make fun of the unnecessary ironing by taking his ironing board and iron with him to strange places and ironing clothes to the amazement of passers-by. Over time, this idea evolved into the sport of "extreme ironing", where people iron in the strangest places, e.g. over 5 km up Mount Everest, over a gorge, during a half-marathon and on a motorway, just as the world record for most underwater people was set in 2008, with 72 divers simultaneously underwater. However, the record has been broken several times since and now stands at 173 people.

Here's one more useless

Do you know anyone who needs a kick in the back? Tom Haywood from North Carolina had enough self-awareness to know he needed it and also thought other people might need a kick in the back once in a while. In 1937 he therefore built this machine, which by means of a crank gave a proper kick to the back. He started by just using it himself, but as the talk went on, he opened it to the public, and especially in the late hours, people sneaked by to get a much-needed kick. The machine is said to have also attracted celebrities such as the Baron and Baroness of Bern and the actress Lucille Ball, just as Harry S. Truman has inspected it. The machine is now on display at the North Carolina Museum of History.

John William Lambert built the first successful automobile in America, so it’s appropriate that he also was involved in one of the first car crashes. In Ohio City, Ohio, in 1891, Lambert’s vehicle came upon a tree root sticking out of the ground. The vehicle hit the root and Lambert lost control, so it slammed into a hitching post. Both John Lambert and the other person in the car walked away with only minor injuries. Ohio City boasts that this was the first car accident, though that should perhaps not be considered a badge of honor.

The Y Bridge in Zanesville was first built in 1814 to span the confluence of the Licking and Muskingum Rivers. The current bridge is the fifth construction at the same location. "Ripley's Believe It or Not" proclaimed it the only bridge in the world which you can cross and still be on the same side of the river.

Women are prohibited from wearing patent leather shoes in public in Ohio.
The reasoning?
So that men can’t see reflections of the women’s underwear in their shoes.

It is illegal for more than five women to live in one house in Ohio.

By state law, no one may be arrested on a Sunday or on the Fourth of July in Ohio, which is totally awesome and definitely not enforced.

The largest, most comprehensive collection of historical contraceptives in the world is at the Dittrick Museum of Medical History in Cleveland.

Aeschylus, an ancient Greek playwright was killed at the age of 67, when an eagle dropped a tortoise on his head. The eagle is said to have mistaken his baldness for a rock and tried to use it to crack the shell of its prey. To add a further strange twist to the death of Aeschylus, Roman author Pliny, suggested that Aeschylus had been spending a lot of time outdoors to avoid a prophecy that he would be killed by a falling object.

Useless parhaps, but nevertheless a part of US Presidential history.

You know that your party gets a little wilder than originally planned? When US President Andrew Jackson was to become President in 1829, he continued following Thomas Jefferson's example and held an open house in the White House. After Jackson took the oath and addressed Congress, he returned to the White House, which was filled with politicians, celebrities, and ordinary citizens, ready to party. Not surprisingly, the party developed rapidly as more and more people joined in, and eventually there were 20,000 people who jumped up in the furniture with dirty shoes and waded around the White House looking for souvenirs. However, the staff at the White House lured the guests out of the house by placing washbasins filled with juice and whiskey out on the lawn. However, the tradition was continued for a while, but an assassination attempt put a damper on the idea, and Grover Cleveland replaced the tradition with a parade instead in 1885.

They were becoming more popular and were regarded as being of higher quality. Having a different spelling gave the Irish another way of distinguishing between the two styles. In 1888, more than 300,000 mummified cats were found in an Egyptian cemetery.
They were stripped of their wrappings and carted off to be used by farmers in England and the U.S. for fertilizer.

Isaac Newton invented the cat flap.
Newton was experimenting in a pitch-black room. Spithead, one of his cats, kept opening the door and wrecking his experiment. The cat flap kept both Newton and Spithead happy.

Not to forget Man's Best Friend!
Robert the Bruce's faithful Bloodhound Donnchadh not only affected Scottish history, but U.S. history as well. Enemies of Robert used his dog to find him in hiding but were surprised when the dog turned on them when they tried to attack his master. Because of this dog hero's intervention the men were driven off and Robert the Bruce survived to become the King of Scotland. Later on, King George III of England's dispute with the colonies in the Americas led to U.S. independence. King George III was a descendent of Robert the Bruce and would not have been in place as King without Robert's surviving years prior.

Would you like a trip to an alternative tourist attraction? In the mid-1980s, the Soviet Union built a bunker in Lithuania, and this bunker has now been turned into an 'amusement park' with the apt name Išgyvenimo Drama. Here you can for only approx. 25 dollar, will be met by guards and have their belongings taken away, including a mobile phone, after which you will be taken down to the bunker. Down here you will, among other things. be interrogated by KGB officers, learn the Soviet national anthem under threats and sent through a maze. The visit should give the tourist a realistic experience of what it was like to be a citizen of the Soviet Union, and if you make it through the trip, you will be rewarded with a voucher and vodka.

Inês de Castro (1323-1355) was the mistress of the Portuguese Crown Prince Peter. When the Crown Prince's wife died, Crown Prince Peter and Inês began living together as husband and wife. They had even more children together, but King Afonso IV felt that Inês had too much power and wanted to prevent her from getting more by becoming the Crown Prince's wife. The king therefore had Inês killed.
When the king died in 1357 and Crown Prince Peter became Peter I, Inês ’body was, according to legend, exhumed. Peter I then had the body crowned and had several courtiers kiss the corpse's hand as a sign of fidelity.

According to folklore, a single girl could beat the egg whites from an egg into a glass until midnight on New Year's Eve, and if a figure could be seen in the white the next morning, it would tell something about her future husband. If, for example. looked like an anvil, she would be happy for a blacksmith.

The Tower Bridge's to upper levels were originally intended to allow pedestrians to walk when the bridge was open for ships.

However, people did not want to climb the stairs so the walkways were unused... until prostitutes started using it for their business dealings. It got so bad that the upper walkways were closed in 1910.

Though it is the highest mountain in the world (at 29,029 feet above sea level), it is not the tallest.

The mission of the unit was to photograph that the Japanese were in compliance with the ceasefire. Remembering the dead is useful because we are human. Well, most of us ... I guess. It reminds us of the very personal cost of war. That each and every one of those crosses in the field are there for someone's son or brother or father. Whether they were the first, last or whatever ... doesn't really matter itself. What matters is that we remember what the last war cost us when we think of starting a new one.

Anthony Marchione's death isn't a useless fact. It's one of the most important things you can remember.

While we'd hope you wouldn't hunt down a camel even if you did see one, you should know that in Arizona it's actually illegal, according to the Maricopa County Bar Association. And while this might seem like a useless law, it was once totally necessary. Col. Robert E. Lee used camels on a long-range patrol. He provided great reviews of the camels' capabilities, but information provided from his reviews may have been ignored with the onset of the Civil War.

CIVIL WAR ENDS THE EXPERIMENTS

Early in the Civil War, Confederate forces captured Camp Verde along with the resident camels. However, they did not use the captured animals for any major operations during the war.

A second camel flock that had been moved to Camp Tejon, California, remained in Union control. It was transferred to different posts throughout the war because no one could think of a mission for them.

Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, unaware of the camel experiments, saw the camels as useless and ordered them to be sold. The camels in California were sold by the end of the war. The remaining camels that were recaptured from the Confederates at Camp Verde were sold in 1866. Many camels were abandoned by new owners or escaped into the wild.

In 1885, Douglas MacArthur (who went on to serve 52 years in the military and hold the top position in the Army) was living at Fort Selden, New Mexico, and recalled seeing a camel. Reports of alleged camel sightings continued to be recorded until the 1940s.
A likely reason for the failure of the camel experiment was that the Civil War was a very mule- and horse-centric conflict. Most of the war was also in the east, where railroads, rivers, and roads were the dominate supply routes.

Another reason the camel experiment failed could have been that its major supporters were Confederates. Jefferson Davis was president of the Confederacy, and Henry Wayne was a brigadier general in its army. The Union likely ignored the great camel review written by Robert E. Lee in 1860 because of his association with the Confederacy as well.
If not for the Civil War and the broken continuity of camel advocates, camels may have been fully integrated into the Army in the southwest. They proved their worth and would have been a valuable asset in the numerous garrisons and conflicts in the west following the Civil War.
Given their proven abilities, camels would have improved logistics in the rugged southwest during conflicts and garrison resupply operations. The success of camels in French, British, and other armies throughout history appears to validate the Army camel experiments. Its failure was not caused by the camels' lack of capabilities.

Actually, the law is a well-known quirk of local ordinances; anyone who has lived in Hollywood for an extended period of time and taken the time to get to know its quirky history has heard about the sheep herding law. It goes back to the days when Hollywood was (at that time and in the earliest ages of the automobile) a far away area from the city of Los Angeles, which was really a rather small city, itself; Hollywood was mainly open land, some of which was cultivated; it was mainly someplace you passed through on the way to, say, the ocean. A few blocks from where I live is a building erected on the former site of the very first sound stage in Hollywood and which was also the site where the first feature-length movie, The Squaw Man, was filmed; the original building was moved to make room for the current structure; the current structure does, however, have a series of plaques mounted on it exterior walls detailing the history of the site; one of the plaques details how one of the original filmmakers in the US was seeking out someplace to move his New York-East Coast operations because the harsh winters and overly-humid summers made year-round filming very difficult, so he took a train trip across the US and thought hr had found a good place in, IIRC, Colorado, but a turn in the weather while he was there caused him to get back on a train and continue on until, just before getting into Los Angeles, he found the area now known as Hollywood...

So there's your useless fact(s): if it hadn't been for a spate of bad weather in Colorado, that is where the "Movie Capitol of the World" might have been, instead of Hollywood...

We have Fatburger down here in SoCal, but the true LA burger is The Original Tommy's, which started as a small burger shack back in 1946, a year before Fatburger was also launched in LA in 1947:

https://originaltommys.com/

Tommy's is so popular and iconic, there are actual "counterfeit Tommy's" burger stands that pop up from time to time, making the Original Tommy's have to retain lawyers to shut down the imposters. I spent two years in a high school just down the street from the Original Original Tommy's stand on Beverly Blvd and they used to reward outstanding students with free burgers. (I never got one...). The Beverly Blvd original stand is such a landmark that people swear the burgers from that location are way better than those at any of the other Original Tommy's official locations; it is still just a little stand, with a minimalist annex facility located just paces away; there are no chairs or tables, just counters, so you either have to eat standing up or in your car; the Beverly site has always been open 24/7/365 and the clientele ranges from school kids, business executives, gangbangers, cops, movie stars and just about any other part of LA demographics you could think of; once, Led Zeppelin pulled into the parking lot, with their entourage, in a small fleet of limousines, ordered a slew of Tommy Burgers, eating them in and around the limos. They are particularly famous for their chili, which they sell by the cup all the way to full quarts, and they sell a lot of the stuff...

Here's another useless history facts

The term 'eye for an eye, tooth for tooth' is known as the 'Law of Talion' from the Bible, but it is actually a paraphrase from one of the earliest collections of law, namely Hammurabis (who was king of Babylon from 1792 - 1749 BC) law . Each section of the Code begins with a legal case: "If…", after which the consequence follows: "then must skal". In Hammurabi, the Law of Talion appears as pure retaliation - just for equal - as in §196, which is reminiscent of the Book of Exodus: "If a man of high rank blinds the eye of another man of high rank, one must blind his own eye."

Movie trailers got their name because they were originally shown after the movie.

The trend, started in the 80s, of sticking on brief scenes onto the end of, or within, the closing credits of films was started because filmmakers and, particularly, film unions and guilds, were annoyed audiences were routinely leaving theaters immediately after the end of the films without staying to read the credits and seeing who was responsible for the behind the scenes efforts to make the films; while this might at first seem to be nothing much more than, perhaps, ego-stroking of those individuals involved, it should be noted an awful lot of the reputation and visibility of the off-camera workers is by word-of-mouth and by having their name associated with a successful and/or noteworthy film; if you look back at early films, the endings were very abrupt, usually little more than "The End" and, maybe, a studio logo; in the days of the old studio system in Hollywood, the studios were not eager to lose staff who excelled to other studios, so there was a sort of unwritten rule to keep the identities of off-camera staff hidden; later years saw the collapse of the major studio system and the push by guilds to get on-screen credits for their members, with the nature and extent of the credits becoming a standard part of the guild contracts; so, the next time you sit in a theater restlessly watching the seemingly endless credits roll by while waiting to see if there is a 'tag scene' in or at the end of the credits, know that it is mainly a means of ensuring the 'résumé' of those people might be seen by potential employers...
