View Full Version : Flat sun

No matter what I do, if I use mods or not, I always have this sun shining in the sky.. flat as a coin...
https://imageshack.com/i/pmQ23WoRj
https://imageshack.com/i/pmsaPcHXj
It's with GWX3.0 and I get this sun from start of every patrol to the en of it. I tried using env mods that include sun halo tga, but the result is the same...
Somewhere I read about a GWX flat sun fix, but can't find a thread about about it. Is that the cure for the problem?
Could someone please give me a hand with this?
Thanks a lot in advance.

EDIT: FUBAR, one question... I see the fix has the ENV files, and by enabling the mod via JSGME, won't it break any env mod I might use?
Flat sun fix for Nvidia:
antialiasing gamma = off
Antialiasing no more than X4 multisampling!

The environmental mod may be the problem causing the flat sun if not made for GWX. Do you have a flat sun after installing it? If not then, another mod installed previously may have caused the flat sun. You need to figure that out.
You can do as Fifi has suggested in a tweak if you have that card.

Tried without any mods at all, just GWX as base, and the flat sun is still there, so I guess the problem is what Fifi said.
Thanks a lot anyway!! You have been very helpful!

I also have the flat sun issue and it doesn't seem to make any difference what graphics settings I use or environment mods with my RTX 2070.
I'm more worried about the odd black artefacts keep flashing just above the horizon randomly.

So in regards to the link. What are you suppose to do with the sun halo TGA? Just stare at it and hope it works?

Just replace the stock one in Data/Misc!
You can make a little mod, just to be sure.

My advice didn’t work?
On my computer if i set antialiasing more than X4 multisampling and gamma correction on on, i have the flat sun...but respecting what i said above, sun is perfect :yep:
Plus if you set antialiasing compatibility to Diablo III in inspector, it’s like my AA was X8!
(You can check my screen shots in screen shot thread, they are just perfect)

Let me know if this works for you! If not I could pack up my environment setup for you which uses U-73's work tweaked with a few adaptments.

Yeah, you are right. I forgot about it, you gave me that hint a while ago, but I forgot about it when I re formated my pc... I just reinstaled it and will give it a try.... I will launch SH3 right now to see if the flat sun is gone now using your settings...
I remember everything was fine after using your settings last time...

RickSarg and Fifi:
I tried both your settings in every possible way, GWX only, SH3 1.4b, with my mods on top of GWX, GWX flat sun fix, etc, you name it,I've tried...
The result is exactly the same, the flat sun is still there.
The only benefit I got out of this long period of tests is that the image in general is fantastic, the jagged image is almost 100% gone and I am pleased with it.
After trying every piece of advice you guys gave me without positive result, it's obvious that something else is causing the flat sun, and I guess it has something to do with a graphics card setting. Until I can precise the origin of this, I will leave my current settings untouched, becuase I am very happy with the results..
Anyway, thanks a lot for your advices and time guys! We didn't fix the main issue, but something else good came out of it.

:hmmm: That is strange...I’m convinced it’s because your game has too much AA...wich leads to flat sun.
Have you tried to set BOTH (In your Nvidia control panel) global parameters tab and programs parameters tab, the gamma correction OFF and AA X4 multisampling ?
Just because sometimes Win10 doesn’t take in account only one of them...(it happened to me)
Have a look here, those are my Nvidia settings (for SH4 but works also for SH3!)
It’s in French but easily translated in english.

This is the version I placed into my Enviro Mod

Today I launched SH3 with GWX and my usual mods and... Voilà!!!! Te flat sun is gone!!! :D
Tried both settings, RickSarg's and Fifi's and with both of them it works fine.... don't know what happened, but we are beck to normal now.
I suspect that in some occasions the SH5 Environment mod causes the flat sun, but I wonder why it does occasionally... :hmmm:
I decided to stop using this mod to avoid further problems.

You do tend to get a flat sun effect where the clouds are a little heavier from time to time seams to be a game limitation where we don't have proper SH5 Shaders.

Yes indeed, if the sun is behind thick clouds, it appears to get flat, but obviously it is not a permanent issue, because as the clouds move or dissapear, there is no flat sun at all, and even with clouds, I can see some faint looong rays coming from the sun. So, to make it short, it was a file from a mod that was left in the main SH3(GWX) folder somehow without JSGME installation that was causing all the problem of the flat sun...
Now can use any env mod and the issue is totally gone... :D

Uhhh, you got me there.... It has been a while since I fixed that problem that I completely forgot about it...
However, I am pretty sure after many tests that everything is solved by using the right values in the Nvidia profile inspector app just as Fifi said. Once I got used to do that, didn't have the flat sun problem anymore :yep:

Thanks! I got it sorted, which means don't alt-tab thinking your gonna bump up your graphic settings; flat sun appears every time.
No matter what I do, if I use mods or not, I always have this sun shining in the sky.. flat as a coin...
:o
If the sun in the game is a circle drawn on the plane... what should the sun look like? Naturally like a flat geometric figure. The circle is white and emits 'light' which is generated by the corresponding controller. Therefore, when the sun is behind the clouds, we clearly see its flat essence. All the tricks listed here do not solve the problem. You can try replacing the evenly white circle by a circle with gradually darkens the white color towards the edges of the sun. In theory, the radiation determined by the controller should also attenuate towards the edges of the sun. It can be assumed that it will take several trials to select the size of the darkened area and the intensity of its color.
:D

P.S.
The result to look when the sun is behind clouds!!!
P.P.S.
and... your sun is very small.

Hi guys,
If you have an Nvidia graphic card, try this :
In Nvidia control panel, desactivate : Anti-aliasing gamma correction
If you use Anti-aliasing, do not go over x4
And with NvidiaProfileInspector, set Anti-aliasing compatibility : Diablo III
If i respect this, then i will have a beautiful shining sun. I think the most important setting here is the Anti-aliasing gamma correction ( Which is not the regular AA setting !). It has always bring graphical glitches in my SH3 install. Something like a kind of flash light on the horizon at night. And of course, a flat sun !
You should try it if you have this annoying problem.
