is anyone actively supporting TMO 2.5?
I have not seen Ducimus for a while so it is unclear if he is still among us.
i found an issue between Flotillas and Patrol Objectives that i wanted to pass along.
Please....only reply if you have info on support.
thanks.

i am trying to figure out why i cannot complete a photo mission to Bandar in Borneo.
the time frame is late March 1942. driving a Sargo out of Fremantle.
the mission specs require closing within 12 km however i have closed to torpedo range, with both scopes up(alternately), and the camera icon will not light.
my thought is that the cause is something simple.
any thoughts?

That is a South China Sea Mission, so the file is "Photo South China Sea 03". The mis file for that does not have any ships set as a photo_target, so you have to find something within the 12km Zone that defines the photo area. That basically covers the point and a little bit of the water area... Not much. So you've got maybe 1/2 of the mouth of the harbor on the south side, and all in the shallows. Photo Value is 20, threshold is 0 (zero) though, so one picture of most anything with a RenownAwarded of 200 or higher should work, or maybe 10 pictures of a fishing boat? But there has to be something within the zone to take a picture of, for the light to light-up. Another thing though - the light does not light unless you lock the target, and hover your mouse over the camera button... Don't forget to have them smile! :salute:

yes, that is the mission. and yes, there are ships in the harbor.
i lock the periscope on the target but no camera icon light.

the light does not light unless you lock the target, and hover your mouse over the camera button...

the light just went on in my head. probably from too many hits.

i am used to other mods where the camera icon lights up once you are in range and lock on a target.

forgot to think that other mods do not do that and your statement turned on the light.
thank you. i knew it was something simple.

i wish i could figure out why SH4 refuses to assign the correct conning tower.
the date is somewhere during October 1942. Why does my boat still have the early war conning tower when it should have the mid war conning tower?

check this out.
my Sargo class boat had fore and aft deck guns at the end of mission.
https://i.ibb.co/GszpwJd/SH4-Img-2020-06-12-18-34-32-614.png
i was offered a new boat and refused the new boat.
shoved off on my next mission and at a critical point discovered that i had a Stern Gun in theory only.
the ghosted Stern gun had to be manned but only the Forward Weapon would fire. it was very weird and never before experienced.

we drew a photo recon at Hiroshima.
Awfully close to Japanese home islands.:03:
we dodge two exiting convoys, hide out overnight (day, actually), sneak into Hiroshima harbor, start taking photos and nothing. i bet i took 10 photos but no success for the Objective.
i saved and exited and reviewed the dotMIS file (Photo Honshu 4) and we should have had a successful mission on the first photo. i know photo missions can be funky just like this because i have experienced this in the past.
anyone else have this difficulty with this mission?:k_confused:

That is basically a "Stock" mission KaleunMarco, and has "35" as it's points for the foto, which means you need a ship with at least 350 renown awarded. If you go in there early enough, a Shokaku Class should be about dead-center of the area. There is a BB just to the west of it, but it is outside of the area, and will not suffice, as most ships in the area will not. They have to be within that circle. Part 2, I would set that "35" to "2" and be done with it. Even the Asashio then would be good enough... Be warned that if you have "duds" enabled, you might shoot a boat-load of torps at them, never get an ASW response, and never sink either of them... very strange... but I did get the mission to complete by reducing the points required down to "2"... never did get it to go with the points at 35, even with the Shokaku there... :salute:

ZoneName=Photo Honshu 04_Zone1 = The circle area where the target and the sub must be inside of

MinPhotoValueThreshold=0 ********no idea what this means = That would be the number of pictures, which have to be a multiple of the above... "zero" is easiest, but is actually "1" because that's how computers count... it can be very difficult to get a mission to function correctly between these last two settings...

The "PhotoValue=" and the "MinPhotoValueThreshold=" are interrelated, but I cannot remember how... divisible by 2? or maybe it was an even divisible of any form... I would have to try to find my old notes for those, which might take a long while (I don't remember which drive they are on, much less which folder they're in), or do more experiments, which would also take a while... For testing purposes, I take those PatrolObjective missions, and add a submarine in just outside of the circle, and then "Save Normal Mission As..." to a Single Mission. That makes it a pinch easier to deal with changing the values. But the ship's Sea folder cfg file "RenownAwarded" also plays in the equations. which is why these foto missions without a given "target" can be so difficult to fulfill. If you have a given target, you can set the values to a known-good value. However, if you or a group of airplanes happen to sink that particular target prior to fulfilling the objective, why you are just out of luck, because it can be most difficult to match the PhotoValue with another ship's RenownAwarded value...

This is why we have a dedicated PhotoTarget in FotRSU, and why lurker made a couple for RSRDC. That way, you can set their RenownAwarded much lower, making the "math" of PhotoValue versus MinPhotoValueThreshold much easier to deal with...

i did some testing and i am still not sure of the formula for success with photo missions.
PhotoValue Renown of Ship that triggers success
900 900
4000 40000
2120 40000
212 2120
900 2120
50 3300
50 2200
50 4100
50 150 - Not
50 200 - Not
50 500 - yes

clearly more testing is needed.
OR
someone who has the secret formula needs to come forward so that i don't have to waste time figuring out the secret formula. :D

I'll see if I can find my notes somewhere here today, because I found more evidence yesterday of more Photo Missions the US subs did, over and above the fourteen sets of panoramic beach shots, and I have come up with an idea for the "Hollywood" missions, so I'll be digging through a bunch of earlier attempts and hopefully find my notes. The easiest way to "think" of it, is 10% of a given ship's value will work. The only problem with that is the ship itself. If it is sunk, then you might have a bit of trouble finding a ship worth the same amount of points. But that is the only way to have a particular ship as the "target" of the photo (it would be best to have it purposely built with it in the scenario)... When you throw that "threshold" value in there, then you can really mess up what would have been a working PhotoValue. For me, the main frustration is there is no error catching, and no way to know what will happen until you run the scenario... I know there is a post on SubSim here somewhere about the "formulae" to use, but I sure can't find it... I found Beery's old advise of "lock on target, take pictures", but that's it...

I'll see if I can find my notes somewhere here today, because I found more evidence yesterday of more Photo Missions the US subs did

so, i took the research findings and modified the TMO-version of Photo Honshu 04 to include a big, fat Yamato parked in Hiroshima Harbor.
that way i am guaranteed a photo-target with enough value to satisfy the Objective Requirement.
no way i was going to take a shot at it because i would never have made it back out to the Pacific and thence home. my valiant crew and i are NOT kamikaze's. the photo mission was bad enough. more on that....
since this is a "hollywood" mission and intensely difficult, i decided to award 100,000 renown if i completed the objective and lived to tell the tale. and i did. or rather "we" did.
on the way back to Midway, we took advantage of some opportunities that presented themselves and sank a couple of Nippons, a couple of ConteVerdes, and a Ise (late war) battleship.
it was very disappointing (lol) to return to Midway and receive a Bronze Star for the our efforts.:timeout::timeout::timeout:
i think a Presidential Unit Citation was more in order but seriously ......the award logic is definitely effed up.
anyway, i am trying to get psyched up to do more photo objective testing but i am failing.
i think my brain is overheated from the nth-consecutive day of over-90 temps we have had.

OK, attempting to add some variety into the photo recons of FotRSU, the initial re-activation will not involve having to go inside of any harbors - unless of course, the player wants to... but anyway, as a test, I took a Yamashiro, which is worth 600 renown points, and a Shoho, which is worth 300 (should be the other way around, but oh well for now). Ten percent of their total of 900 renown points is 90. I want a player to have to take a picture of each vessel. So here is the "set-up" in the test mission:

https://i.imgur.com/XjQnyfR.jpg

It seems to me that they mis-labeled the boxes for "Photo Value" and "Minimum photo value threshold", but oh well. It is what it is... In the meantime, in the mission, picture one:

and picture two:

and the Photo Objective is completed... More experimenting forthcoming. :salute:

i am playing RSRD over TMO.

the base (brisbane) does not move (milne bay, wherever that is) until October '43, which leaves just upgrade or retirement, which is odd because Gar-class was/were used throughout the entire war.

i will let it play out and see what happens. my next mission starts 6/2/43 which is after the expiration date of the Gar at this location (see above). More to come......

completed the 6/2/43 mission.
the USN mothballed my boat (mistake) and mothballed me at the same time.
well, now we know what happens in this situation when a boat has an end date and is not transferred to base that accepts them.
we should fix this as i mentioned previously, Gars served for the duration. i just changed the Flotillas dates to the end of the war for Sargo, Salmon, Tambor, and Gar, all homeported at Brisbane. i left the S-boats and Gato alone.
i have not looked at the other bases for similar issues.

so, there i was in the middle of a fur ball, attacking a TF, when i noticed that the CVE Shoho's kept disappearing off the Nav screen when we were submerged. i know she was in range but the icon would disappear.
by chance, when a Shoho icon was present, i selected it and zoomed in and poof it disappeared however i still had it selected.
being the genius that i am i figured that the graphic representing that particular ship class was either missing or corrupted.
the trick now is in determining which file in the \Data\Sea\NCVE Shoho is the correct file.

Ehhh... sometimes the program used to open a file is the problem when trying to see those type of files. You are dealing with a small, transparency alpha with minimal "artwork" for the outline of the ship. Try Paint.net and see if you can zoom in on what you are looking at. The game also uses those little "square" dealies that are in the Data Menu Gui Units folder - I think I listed the correct one... The shp file is for when you zoom way in... I think. I do not have my notes in front of me here. sorry.

don't know what Paint.net is but GIMP 2.10 can open DDS files.
even having done that now, i am not sure what it is that i am looking at.

Driving a Gar out of Brisbane, September-October 1943.
Convoy Traffic has dropped off the map.
Prior to this time there is regular traffic in/out of Rabaul and Truk and PNG and now...nothing. Or very little.
i've checked the Campaign file and there is a fair amount of convoys that are valid until the end of the war, which leads me to a Mission Editor/RGG question:

Question:
Say an RGG is defined as being available from 1/1/1942 through 12/31/45 with a Repeat Interval of 7 days and a MaxInstances of 100.
Would that mean that the RGG would stop generating itself after 23 months (eff Nov 1944)?
100 times 7 days = 700 days duration / 30 days per month = approx 23 months or from January 1942 through November 1944.
:hmmm:
