View Full Version : A mysterious bug while modding

Hello everyone,
I recently discovered the Schnellboat mod, version 2. I enjoy it a lot. The modder (Mikhayl) did a very good job. Nevertheless, I discovered a strange thing. I didn't understand why, for such a small boat, my FPS rate was so low, until I discovered that the original model of the type IXC submarine was still there, inside the S-100 hull, scaled at a much smaller size. So, I decided to delete this useless part in order to increase the FPS level. But, when I tried to launch a mission (that I already played just before I delete the submarine model), the game crashed.
Does anyone understand anything to this ? It seems really mysterious to me...

hahaha! that was funny. :haha:
Im not laughing at anybody or on the author of that mod.
But it's just so funny how he made that to work in the game as you described it. It's beyond obvious why he did that. :D

Would you dare to share your knowledge on this ? :)
I also exported the 3D model, and then re-imported it in S3D without modification from me, and the game crashed as well...

If anyone is wishing to help me, I may send him the files. Just let me know...

The type IX is probably needed somehow to emulate the torpedo boat?

It is apparent that the underlying IX is needed for all the functions of the e-boat, which is a skin placed on top of the IX. By removing the IX you essentially broke the mod, lost all control of any functions needed to make it work. The IX was most likely a quick expedient to get a schnelboat up and working as opposed to creation of a new ship model.
There may be ways to improve the frame rate, if it can be done, by moddding the underlying IX for improvement. Not sure of your modding skills.
Good luck.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
You seem to know what you're talking about. What "skin" are you talking about ? The 3D model has only one skin applied to it (SB_S100_T01.tga). And what are those "functions" needed to make the E-boat work ? Moreover, the modder created a complete new ship model, but he left the original submarine model with it for some unknown reason.
And how do you explain the fact that the game crashes after I exported and reimported the (unmodified) 3D model ?

Real short answer, I do not know why you are having issues.
It just seems to have been some connection to old model of the IX for functions to the schnelboot, causing CTD once broken. I do not have this mod and do not know how it is set up.
Just out of curiosity, do you have a working IX and does the model work properly.

Kendrass indicated he had to disable mods in order to get this going.

Ok. Thank you for the link, but I don't have any issue with the installation of the SB mod. About our subject, I'm finally thinking there is little chance that anyone has enough knowledge on how the game is working to be able to explain my issue.

There are people well qualified to answer the question. They just don't have the time to answer in an instance.
:03:
I'll down load the mod and look at it and give you the answer you seek.
I'm pretty sure why he did it that way.
I won't say it's the best way to do it that way.
And I know it could have been done better.

Hello,
Thank you for the support! I may send you directly the few files if you prefer (and if you think that it's enough to solve the issue), as the whole SB supermod (v2) is a huge thing to download...
I greatly hope your idea is going to work!
Let me know for the files.

I did work for the early Mod so will just down load it.

Imagine you are cruising on a yacht, you are drinking cocktails, sun hits you in the head, blondes all around you, you are having a good time.
Then you wanna go to bathroom but some eye glitch tells you u need to go to engineering room. Now, what do you see there, you see a small submarine running the whole yacht, so you write a letter to wakypedia,
and some1 makes a mod out of it. Now you have to ask your self, if i didn't saw the engineering room would i still enjoy the cruising on that mod :D
Pce.

Give me the dat you saw this in.
Never mind. I found it
Looks like laziness to me given the other boat don't have this.
The whole mod is such a mess! Now I recall why I never bothered with it.

Actually 2 boats have this issue: 9c and 9d2.
Why are you saying that the whole mod is such a mess? What did you see? :)

If you change the 3D model during the campaign, you will never be able to continue your career. Only in base! And maybe You need to start a new career.

I see a mess that I won't even try to install!
Where is the SBM 2.0 beta.exe the read me names to install?
A mess I won't even attempt.

So, if you don't want to make the correction, could you explain how I can do it myself? :)

I can fix the files for you. That is a simple thing.
Just I have never seen such a convoluted way to install a mod!

Can you "7zip" the executable and get the files out properly that way? Then just make it JSGME compatible? :salute:

New remark: when I export and re-import a city's house, the model which was textured with 2 textures is now textured with only one. It looks like that a special function is missing in the S3D import window...:hmmm:

I'd say you are doing something wrong.
I've exported/imported MANY things and multiple textures are not a problem.
Send me a link to the files involved.

It is the harbour_kit.dat in the Library folder: House01_A01 (node 465)

There are texture files in the dat, generally close-by, but not always. Look up top in the nodes. You might have to look at the texture to export the correct one, but export it and put it above your exported city house. :salute:

Maybe you've to add the missing .tga manually after re-import of material:

No, there isn't any missing .tga linked to the 3D model, I didn't delete it, it's still there, but the model is now textured only with the first one, as I can see in the preview geometry windows.
Could you try to reproduce my experiment?
First, you have to change some of the settings of both tga involved:
- the "specular strength" of both tga must be different than 0, else the model will look plain black;
- you have to assign a different "diffuse color" for both texture (for instance white for the first, and yellow for the other one)
Then see how it's look like visually in the Model preview window (select the node of the model in the list on the left side, and (in Model preview windows) click on "c" to center view on it: windows and doors should be painted with a different color than walls and roof.
Now, export the 3D model (in fact 2: ----.obj and -----uv2;Obj), and re-import them (just select the ----.obj, the -uv2.obj will be selected automatically) and be sure that the option "collapse subobjects to single mesh" is selected in the import window.
Now, look at the model in the Model preview windows... What do you see?

Hello guys,
If you find some free time during this week-end, I'm still interested in solving the problems discussed in this thread. Many thanks!
