You may have forgotten that the game needs to be installed somewhere other than either of the Program Files directory controlled by Windows. Try putting it in something like C:\Games\Ubisoft\Silent_Hunter_IV instead. Also turn off the Read Only feature for the base folder and all sub folders and files. And don't forget to run Large Address Aware on the SH4.exe application.
Hope this helps.

... and when you re-install, you need to install the DirectX v9.0c that comes with the game... :salute:

No. It isn't.
Install it on something other than your system drive, install the DX 9 as stated above.
Never let geek squad touch your computer. EVER!! :k_rofl:
What is your OS?

The answer to dx question is NO! Install Direct X that comes with the game you get an option for it when you do your install. Don't install game shadow or the Adobe Acrabat. C:\Ubisoft\sh4\file is fine if that's what you want. Before install check your documents folder if you see a folder SH4 delete it. It should not be there but check anyway. After install do not start the game reboot your computer first. Then go back to torpedobait's post and follow his instructions

Go to the base game main folder (mine is D:\Ubisoft\Silent_Hunter_IV) and RIGHT click on that folder. Select Properties. The Read-Only box probably is shaded. Click on that box so that it is clear, then click on "Apply'".
It will ask if you want it to apply to all subfolders and files. Check that box and hit enter. There are a lot of folders and files so it may take a minute or two. Just let it run. When it finishes you are all set. No need to recheck it. That Read-Only box may appear shaded again - a Windows default is my guess - but they will all be write-enabled regardless.
See if that does it for you.

Howdy,
I have had Win10 and SH4 for years installed on my root drive (not in program folders) and it ran great until last week. It just stopped launching one day. Like most others, my W10 auto-updates when MS decides it wants to screw with its customers. (just kidding, I know they are working to fix security problems).
I tried all the Compatibility Changes but nothing seemed to work. Now, still running as Admin, when I click the Icon, it asks if I will allow changes, then it stops. It won't launch at all, the cursor returns to the Icon where I launch it from (or used to).
I uninstalled and reinstalled the game from my CD version.
BTW, I changed the Properties trick mentioned above but it didn't matter.
I read about the DPI changes that are possible but have never changed them and it always ran fine.
Thanks...

I suggest anyone having a Windows Operating System later than XP (the base OS that the game was designed for), and has 4 gigs or more of RAM memory, to follow the pages found here...….Windows10; Large Address Aware; SH4 Install (www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=228888)
No need to run the game as an "Administrator", or NOT have the latest Windows Updates installed as they are made available...….the game runs better than ever with a Windows 10, Version 1809, OS Build 17763.316...….the latest "build" of Windows 10 as of this date!
