Killerfish Games
11-02-17, 06:34 PM
We've been busy working on Cold Waters and over the next few months expect to see new content being added to the base game. The plan (subject to change) is to have all this in sometime around the New Year.
As a thank you to all who supported Cold Waters and made it such a success, this additional content will be added free to the base game.
Feel free to discuss this new content here:

New Playable Submarines
Two highly requested submarines are being added for players to skipper:
- Seawolf
- 688i
Neutral Vessels and Oil Rigs
Neutral vessels will now be transiting the combat theatre and oil rigs may be present in some regions, making it crucial to correctly identify targets before unleashing weapons.

Well from what the devs already mentioned, moving forward with a single version of the game will be much easier to support vs. several different versions which would come up with say two DLC releases (ie standard version with no DLC, one with all DLC, one with DLC A but not B, one with DLC B but not A).
The upshot is that the added free content should lead to increased sales and win over at least some of the fence-sitters who haven't yet made the plunge for Cold Waters. Some companies could learn a thing or two from how Killer Fish Games operate and I think that most of the success this game has had comes from sound decisions on their part.

Looks like some good stuff.
I'll admit, I was hoping you guys would fill out the earlier periods, adding Barbel and Skate classes, as well as friendly and allied surface ships and subs. But heck, I'll take this and happily!

I too had this question. It might be an idea to drop the cost of the steam game say $10 and then make this a $10 add on. That way it entices newcomers and still generates a profit from DLC. I understand the simplicity of a single game to maintain, but other companies manage DLCs just fine.
I want companies like KFG to make good money on these games because it is a niche market and it's good for us for companies to want to make these games.
Just my $0.02. :salute:

Will we see Soviet/Russian warships in the SCS campaign? Seems a bit unfair to be rampaging around in the SCS in a Seawolf with only the fairly obsolescent PLA navy to contend with.
"On steam you guys said this will be free? How are you guys releasing this for free?"
There is a difference between "free" and no additional charge.
As has been proven many times over the years, new features and refinements to an existing game generates new sales. DLC is not the only way or always the best way to generate income.

Just noticing a willingness to keep KFG financially going with CW. Apparently, it is a good sim game and it is/could be a long-term hit for KFC. I hope KFC goes that way. I really enjoy it.
Maybe I got an Army Commendation Medal for stopping a Spec Ops Team from landing somewhere. I never really put the two things together. I will have to watch for that.

i just hope resupply at sea becomes a thing (or at least in other habours) and the mission generator takes the location of your submarine into account ... some missions have a super unfair time limit when you just resupplied.

Going for critical ships/subs saves ammo. I have taken out the supply ship and left the escorts. I still got credit.
Yes, a random notice that ammo resupply is available for a three day period would be nice. But, I don't know that any old smuggler can toss a torpedo over their shoulder, plop it into a black rubber boat and meet you in the harbor at midnight.
But, then again, Norway is a friendly country. Don't the U.S. Marines train in Norway? They have hefty shoulders.

I agree with supporting both, KFG makes a damn good submarine game and on a good day KFC makes some fine chicken, in a way the two kind of go hand and hand (a good game is even better, with chicken:up:).
Oh yes!!! Can't wait for the oil ring to be release but a side from this will we be able to drive a SSBN? I really like the Vanguard and i know it is kind of silly but i want to use it as a attack sub(i am using the playable sub mod and still they are not offical right?)

Did I see a rumor at some point that we may anticipate friendly surface units / subs to contend with/cooperate with? Just curious. Think that would really stretch the game construct, but it would be pretty amazing too. Would love to pop up to periscope depth and zip off a burst transmission to an E-2C, then maybe do some inshore targeting for a CVBG strike package. Lots of other cool options I'm sure. Looking forward to Neutrals and oil rigs though. Spicing it up and making it more immersive!

I was one of those people who kept requesting the 688i and Seawolf. I honestly can't wait to play both of these submarines.
The Chinese campaign is icing on the cake.
I assume down the road they'll add a 90's Russian campaign with Akulas, so if anyone is worried about the lack of Russian stuff, i'd wait and see what happens.

Do you also enjoy shooting (Chinese) fishies in a barrel? Maybe :).
I play the 68 campaign the most, so it's going to be some fun with the Chinese Campaign being "Easy" with the Seawolf/688i's... it'll be fun to see the other side of the spectrum.
Still hoping to see a 90's campaign with the Akula/Akula improved added (with a playable Soviet campaign to go with them) down the road.
"Did I see a rumor at some point that we may anticipate friendly surface units / subs to contend with/cooperate with?"
Not "friendly" in the game sense, rather neutral (don't shoot vessels.)
Stated in the first post on thread You are reading:

What might be confusing is there are a great many posts on the forums talking about "friendly" ships and using the word inconstantly. In other words "ships on your side" but I haven't found any posts by KF that "friendlies" in the game sense ("Allies") have been officially announced. Neutral ships are not aligned with anyone and the battle just happens to occur around civilian assets and shipping lanes. Some games like this will have "escort" missions. These are the kinds of missions were friendlies/allies should be added to the game. The opponent then could not shoot their own friendlies but you could shoot theirs.

Great news!
Oil rigs and civilian vessels would be great to hide behind/under and attack from.
Would be nice to see some better landscapes, i.e. underwater formations, like steep cliffs and canyons that subs could hide against/in. Just like in Red October when they run through the canyon because they have a hyper accurate survey/chart to help them hide from detection.
Julhelm
11-16-17, 06:26 PM
Those formations just don't exist like that IRL. We use real-world bathymetry data in the game. If the ocean floor looks featureless, it's because it is IRL.

what do you guys think about noise maps like a procedural generated "detail" layer for different terrain types. i know on macro level, it's basically flat, but on a more micro scale, you'd see rocks, corals, etc

I've been looking at ways to populate the seabed, but every day we spend on this is a day we don't get to produce additional content and gameplay features. So while we would like to improve the terrain, it is currently a low priority.

Hey, I have played a couple of days now and figured this would likely be the best thread for feedback. I have used the two highest difficulty settings.
When it comes to sub vs. sub combat I believe improvements such as shooting towards heard launch transients are on the way but what about surface vessels? They dont seem to ever avoid my torpedo attacks. I'm not sure what exactly they could do or what could be done game balance wise, in other games surface vessels use countermeasures and can try to outrun the torpedo, often with success, but in CW they just maneuver hard and get sunk. This makes the 1984 feel easy because all the ships I meet need just one torpedo and I can shoot very far. Surely this helplessness cannot be the case in real life?
Enemy subs are almost as helpless if only I get to shoot first but at least the helicopters make sub captain's life exiting. :)

In my experience, that's not really the case. Even on easy I had warships maneuvering and dropping countermeasures to evade torpedoes almost every time. That doesn't mean that they'll succeed, modern torpedoes like Mk48s are designed to defeat countermeasures and can outmaneuver most ships. Also, not all the ships in the game have sonar, unlike the movies, modern torpedoes don't leave a surface wake, so they really can suprise enemy shipping that's not listening for it.

Aye, they do maneuver and drop decoys, but my point was that those dont help them much. They'll drop a decoy and start turning as the Mk48 enters go-around logic. If they turn to same direction the Mk48 will just slam their side and its a kill. If not, Mk48 will shortly find the ship again and kill it anyway. No matter what ship it is it will at most get to drop maybe 3 decoys. Some of the ships can run nearly 40 knots and they'd be better off just running straight while making knuckles and dropping decoys in hopes of making the torp run out of fuel.
The same problem plagues submarines but they at least maneuver in depth too and every now and then they manage to lose a slow Mk37. But Mk48 just kills everything it gets within seeker range of, without fail. Its the combination of very long seeker range, very high speed of 55 knt and superb range and endurance. It's so good that missiles are almost useless other than for taking out fleeing transports from behind their escorts when I dont want to just sink everything to save torps and time.
Capt.Hunt

That sounds like Gould/Honeywell's problem more then Killerfish's. Mk48s are really that good. A surface ship just isn't going to outrun a Mk48. Like it or not, Turning is probably the best option for a ship, even if it's the lesser of two evils, there is a chance that your ship might be able to get clear of the seeker head's FOV, or keep it turning long enough to run it out of fuel. Running away is about as useful as manning the lifeboats, eventually that fish will catch you.

They should do what the player does: that is keep running straight, drop decoys, make knuckles and let the torp go around those two until it runs out of fuel. Most warships are fast enough to do it, if a 33 knot 688 can escape a Mk48, a 38 knot ship can too. What they do now, is that once the torp gets close enough, they will make hard maneuvers and circle and they will die 100 % of the time when there isnt something else nearby that may get the torp's attention.
I refuse to believe Mk48 is one shot, one kill on every naval target in reality, and in game AI's bad tactics dont help.
