Thought it would be good to come with some more ideas for campaign missions. It's kind of tricky, a lot of things subs did were more or less variations on the SEAL missions currently in game (get to a point quietly) which aren't the most interesting. Likewise finding a particular sub that doesn't want to be found is pretty much done already and also not the best in gameplay terms (especially in '68).
I did come up with some ideas though. They may not be the most realistic scenarios but it might mix things up a little.
Boomers on Ice
This would be similar to the last mission of the campaign only slightly easier/or at least less of a needle in a haystack. The briefing mentions that intel has provided the rough location of a Soviet SSBN hiding under an ice flow from Aerial and Satellite search. When the player gets there they have to search 3-4 icebergs for the Boomer giving some idea where to look but not an exact picture. Further wrinkles could be added by having attack subs in ambush at one or more of the bergs.
Distress Call
This could work in several different ways. Having to protect a friendly sub/ship would be good but that probably requires a fair bit more code than currently exists so I'd probably switch it around. The briefing mentions that a distress signal from a surfaced Soviet sub has been detected, the player is tasked with intercepting the relief convoy sent to rescue it and the sub if possible (but sink it early and the convoy will flee). This gives the player a chance to set an ambush at a known destination. The wrinkle is a chance the Soviets are using the entire distress signal as bait, with a clapped out old Whiskey and a skeleton crew with a number of modern attack boats lying at a dead stop nearby with aircraft support.
Any other ideas?
