With a modern computer having 4 gigs of RAM memory (or more), it's become apparent that we should keep several things in-mind as we install games/programs with the Operating System (anything between Vista and Windows 10). This tutorial should help in keeping things working as expected when older games/programs like Silent Hunter 4 are used. Windows10 has some quirks that we need to be aware of, plus, an additional program like Large Address Aware (https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/large-address-aware.112556/) are "must haves" when your system has a minimum of 4 gigs of memory, no matter which OS you're using. LAA is my personnel preference, some others like the app called "4gig Patch"....either one does the same thing for your system. I'll explain these points further in this thread.

First installing Windows10.

For most of you, you won't need to follow the next couple of paragraphs. You've upgraded your system from Windows 7; 8; 8.1, and have "carried over" some of your settings right into Windows 10. That's fine as long as those settings were correct to begin with. You should still learn how to check your computer to know just what's on it......you may find your older/carried-over setup wasn't correct to begin with! You can move on to the paragraph with the ***.

For me, I had to purchase a new edition of Windows 10 to work with my newest computer build: i5 6500 3.20 Ghz CPU; 8g of RAM; CrossFireX RX 420 video cards. I chose a 64 bit OS and proceeded to install it onto my newly formatted hard disk. Even though the OS CD was just bought, I found the Automatic Update feature began immediately to update the OS. I also learned that the Power settings for Windows 10 are set to "Sleep" after only 10 minutes of time. Hardly enough time for my slow DSL to get started on the download of upgraded files before it decided to take a nap. I found the downloading of the updated "Win10 v.1511 Build" files ended up "Failing" after looking at the "Update History".

Once my Power settings were adjusted to "Never" turning off, the updates installed fine. After some time, maybe 3 hours into the Updating, I was asked if I wished to Update to version 1607 Build, more commonly known as the "Anniversary Edition". I clicked YES, with Automatic Update starting once again. Some 12 hours later (yes it took all night to install) I found my computer sitting quietly with only the "Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1607" showing on the "History" page. The history of v.1511 updates were deleted as if all things were new again. This update is a big one since all remanence of the older version are gone. Since then, my Update History has grown, with all updates showing a "Successful" install.

***For those who have had Windows 7, 8, or 8.1..... your process of updating to Windows 10 has been a bit different. The object is the same.......to put the latest edition of Windows 10 onto your computer, with its most recent updates AND, to check that your existing files are compatible in running this 10 year old game. To find what "build" you have, left click the "Windows Logo" button in the lower left corner; then left click the "Gear" looking icon:

https://s25.postimg.cc/s535hlurj/745a3311-e75c-42d5-85fd-eae535da167f.jpg

A "Windows Settings" page pops up:

https://s25.postimg.cc/e7q2wyfi7/Win10_System.jpg

Click the "System" heading and the following page appears. Scroll to the bottom of the list to "About", the following information appears:

https://s25.postimg.cc/ieaxcaf3z/Win10_SystemAbout.jpg

This way you know what version of Windows 10 you have...... the above shows my "Version" is 1607 (the Anniversary Edition); plus which "Build".....14393.479. This Build number will change as updates are installed. The information regarding your system is important if your wanting to know how much memory your computer has, or if your system needs an update.

Two things need to be stressed before installing the game.

First, allow Windows 10 to update Automatically to get the latest updated files.

Secondly, keep your Silent Hunter game install out of either the "Program Files", "Program Files (x86)", or the "ProgramData" folders. The reason is to avoid the handicap Windows uses on us when a program/game is defaulted to install in one of these folders. Windows won't let you change the properties of the program/games loaded in these folders because it thinks you'll screw something up. Or, it tries to prevent computer corruption if these programs are changed in some way. If your planning to add content to your game (like a modification through JSGME, or JSGME itself, or a memory helper like LAA).....you're changing your original game files. Believe me, this old game didn't expect to be treated like a "problem waiting to happen" by the OS......so don't install it in these folders. You'll not need to change the game files to "Run as Administrator", or any other setting, if you just install it as follows. Newer programs/games that are designed to work with Windows 10 are fine to be installed in these folders.....but not older ones.

For us older guys, working with files/folders was how computing used to be when using DOS Operating Systems. Today it's more visual...... Icons for every aspect with one window opening to another. However, you still need to get used to seeing your computer contents as folders/files to do some of the necessary things I'm going to bring up. Knowing how to find your "Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific" main game folder is important to keeping track of what goes in it, like the Jones Soft Generic Mod Enabler (JSGME) which is used to add mods to your game.

When at your Desktop screen, along your lower Task Bar, you'll find a yellow Icon that looks like a folder, it's called "File Explorer" (just below the red dot).

https://s25.postimg.cc/4r09qbvnj/Win10_UpdateHistory01.jpg

Left clicking this icon takes you to a list of contents of your computer showing in the left pane. Find "This PC" and click on it to open. It expands to reveal, among other contents, your hard disk drives and their partitions if you made one. I made a new folder on my "Local Disk (C)" drive by right clicking it; clicked "New"; then clicked "Folder". I named it "Games". It's within this folder where I installed the game. The reason for this specific "Games" folder is for keeping you from needing to tell Windows you have "Administrative" rights to changing your game files (which you will if you mod; or add Large Address Aware to your game). It also will keep you from having to run the game in some "Compatibility" mode.....you can eliminate these extra duties just by not putting your game in these folders....."Program Files"; "Program Files (x86)"; or "ProgramData". The game runs fine on Windows 10 v.1607 without any extra concern for setup, as long as you avoid putting it into one of these folders.

I should point out that when installing the SH4 game, besides directing the new "Path" for the game to go to your "Games" folder (use the "Browse" tab to get the correct path), you also should allow the DirectX v9.0c install to check/add the appropriate files to your system:

https://s25.postimg.cc/6dphbk7pb/SH4_Installation.jpg

Yes, you've got a much newer DirectX (v12) in Windows 10, but allow the game to add any additional files that support the DirectX 9.0c version the game requires. Further in this thread, I've added a specific post regarding DirectX (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2459400&postcount=6) and why its important for all of us who have a newer Operating System (above WindowsXP) to allow a "Mircosoft DirectX Runtime Installer" to check your system for missing DirectX files. Yes, you have older/missing DirectX files if you have DirectX 12 installed!

Getting back to the installation, you should skip out of installing the Adobe Reader, or Game Shadow to your computer.

Once installed, run the game to set your games resolution to match what your Windows 10 desktop uses, then exit the game without playing. Back in Windows, install Jones Soft Generic Mod Enabler (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=204594) to your Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific "main" game folder. Add JSGME even if you never plan to add a mod to your game. You'll be able to use the "Compare Snapshot" feature of JSGME (further instructions to follow) to check your stock game files....which is important if you run into trouble with your game. During JSGME's install, you'll need to "Extract" the files from its compressed folder; again use "Browse" to extract using the correct path to your "main" game folder. Once JSGME is installed, open its .exe file to run it. In the middle of the JSGME program screen you'll find a menu heading "Tasks...", click it to enable the "Generate snapshot of game files". This is so important!! To take a "Snapshot" of your clean/unmodded game files before adding your first mod. It's the only way of knowing if your game has corruption or not when adding/removing mods. AND, by all means, read the JSGMEHelp.txt file that's in your main game folder!!

I'm suspecting you'll need to add Large Address Aware (https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/large-address-aware.112556/) to your computer in order to direct the game to use additional memory if you have at least 4 gigs of RAM memory. Windows 10 requires more memory than ever before to run. Most computers today have 4, 6, 8 gigs (and more) of RAM memory installed. So, plan to put some of it to work with this older game by using LAA. This old early 2000 designed game had no idea that RAM memory was going to be so cheap, or necessary for today's computers. The game limits the access of RAM to a maximum of 2 gigs as it comes out of the box. With LAA enabled within SH4, it will give a 32 bit OS the ability to use a total of 3 gigs for the game; with a 64 bit OS.....it doubles the access to 4 gigs. Keep in mind, for a 32 bit OS to work with LAA, a special "Switch" must be enabled. Follow the LAA "Spoiler" instructions for a 32 bit OS. Again, you need at least 4 gigs of RAM for either 32 or 64 bit systems before LAA can work. It's been proven successful with dozens of older games and programs.

I've already seen the difference in having LAA work on my computer, compared to not using it. I had a CTD every time I opened a heavily modded game of SH4. Mods like FOTRSU that double the ship models will definitely be improved with LAA. I was playing an older game on my sons laptop (Sid Meier's Railroads) and couldn't get it to play more than 10 minutes before it CTD. After adding LAA, no issues at all. Here's what to do to install LAA.

First, you need to set up your game's .exe (execution) file to have changes made to it. By going to your "main" game folder, find the file called "sh4.exe" and right click it. A menu list pops up, left click the "Properties" heading, the following menu appears:

https://s25.postimg.cc/5k7ryaiv3/EXE02.jpg

By default the game set's the "Attributes:" to "Read-only". This is not good, it won't allow LAA to work if it's left as is. Uncheck the box; then click "Apply"; then "OK" to leave the "sh4.exe Properties" page. Now you're ready to have LAA access your sh4.exe file. LAA will set the flag to allow more memory to be used in-game.

Using the above link to Large Address Aware, read the introduction of what the app will do, then scroll to the bottom of the page to start the download;

https://s25.postimg.cc/laxg5nri7/LAA01.jpg

For a Windows 10 OS that's updated to v1607 (or newer), download the "laa_2_0_4_NetFramework_4_5.zip". This version is designed to work with the NetFramework edition that's on Windows 10, which should be at least version 4.5. The download on the left, "laa_2_0_4.zip" is used for the older systems that only have NetFramework 3.5 or below.

You may be wondering just what version of NetFramework do you have? Here's how to check.

Right click the "Windows Logo" button (lower left), and click the "Run" menu heading:

https://s25.postimg.cc/w45gl327z/Win10_Run.jpg

In the text box, type "Regedit":

https://s25.postimg.cc/ss75rsagv/Win10_Regedit.jpg

This will take you to the System Registry. Be careful, don't change a thing. You're just "looking"!! Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/

https://s25.postimg.cc/w2viro0e7/Registry01.jpg

Under the Microsoft heading, open to NET Framework Setup/NDP. You should find at least v4 and v4.0 listed. On mine when I first looked, I did not have v3.5, v3.0, v2.0 listed. My "stand alone" Windows 10 DVD doesn't come with these older versions. I had to download them from Microsoft. You folks that upgraded from Windows 7 thru 8.1 should have the older versions grandfathered over. The reason to include all possible .NetFramework versions on your computer is to cover all possible programs that may look for that older version and not run as expected when it doesn't find it. It won't hurt to have the older versions sitting on your computer.

As you can see, my current version of NetFramework is 4.6.01586 (with the added v3.5, v3.0, v2.0 listed):

https://s25.postimg.cc/4cyxqqbjz/Registry02.jpg

If your Registry has the v4 and v4.0 listed, you're up to date. Use the "laa_2_0_4_NetFramework_4_5.zip".

If the version shown is 3.5 or below, you'll need to download the "laa_2_0_4.zip" file to enable LAA on your system.

Close out of the registry, then extract the correct compressed .zip file of LAA onto your computer. I put it into its own folder on the "Local Disk (C)" drive. Once installed, open the Large Address Aware.exe to run the program. The program opens in the Basic mode:

https://s25.postimg.cc/9odc4j473/LAA_Basic.jpg

In Step 1, you again use the Browse button (to the right of the Path text box), following it to the "sh4.exe" found in your main game folder. In Step 2 you simply check mark the LAA Flag....enabling the games .exe to access additional RAM. Step 3, you then "Save" your setting. You're done! LAA will be configured for Silent Hunter.

A way to check your settings is to go to the Advanced mode. Click the "Options" menu, then click the "Load Previous Files". This should populate the list of games, you've enabled with LAA, including their correct Path to the game's .exe file. Under the LAA heading, you should find the "True" text for the Silent Hunter game:

https://s25.postimg.cc/a3olxjq4f/LAAConfirm.jpg

Your system is now updated to handle that stock pile of games you've wanted to play, starting with Silent Hunter. With other games, I suggest you follow the same procedure. Put them in your "Local Disk (C)/Games/" folder, and have LAA open up your system's memory to the added game following the above instructions.

As a help for those reading this thread for the first time, several critical additional processes need to be pointed out. I've added the most important of them to the following "links" so you don't have to read the entire thread to get the most out of my tutorial.

".NetFramework versions (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2453045&postcount=2)" Easy enough, it follows directly after this post.

"DirectX installation, all versions (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2459400&postcount=6)" It's important to run the "DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer" to have the older DirectX files added to Windows 10.

"Tips for stable gameplay (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2468826&postcount=7)" One of the more critical game play areas has been how the game keeps tract of "saved games", (or the lack of it!). These points will help.

"Compatibility and Windows 10 Troubleshooting (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2491418&postcount=11)" This post covers what to do when you find SH4 won't start after a Windows Update.

"Latest Windows Update's (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2609672&postcount=64)" This post has the current Windows 10 updates (as of May 16, 2019) and the importance in allowing Windows 10 to complete "Updating" before playing SH4.

I pointed out in my first post, that those of you who had Windows 7, 8, 8.1 installed on your computer before updating to Windows 10 may have had some differences in your install compared to mine. My Win10 install came from a stand alone CD due to the fact that my last operating system was Vista. I found that when Windows 10 isn't upgraded from a previous version (newer than Vista), the older NET Framework editions (v3.5, 3.0, 2.0) are not installed, nor are they "Enabled" in Windows 10! I can't personally verify that an upgraded version of Win10 from one of the earlier Windows versions actually brings with it the older NET Framework editions (if you had them to begin with) so.....it's important to know what versions of NET Framework your system has. I showed you how to check for yourself if you have them or not in the first post of this thread.

Since I know my Windows 10 does not include the older versions of NET Framework (which many times only works with the older games/programs), I thought I'd show you the process of how I got them, and how to enable them.....all at the same time.

I found this answer on Microsoft's site:

https://s25.postimg.cc/566fyoyrj/Confirm_.net_Framework.jpg

As the instructions state, click the Windows Logo (the old Start Button) with the "R" key at the same time. Type appwiz.cpl onto the "Run" text box. This will take you to the Programs and Features page:

https://s25.postimg.cc/g4hpgvncv/Confirm_.net_Framework02.jpg

Mouse click the "Turn Windows features on or off". This will bring up the following page.....On my Windows 10, the NET Framework 4.6 was partially "enabled". The NET Framework 3.5 (includes NET 2.0, 3.0) was not:

https://s25.postimg.cc/fb9p206pr/Enable_.net01.jpg

I check marked the v3.5 heading, not adding any of the sub menu items. I had previously read from a Microsoft answer that the sub menu items are mainly for programmers:

https://s25.postimg.cc/8pwz28qv3/Enable_.net02.jpg

Clicked the "OK" button. Windows "Automatic Update" kicked in, downloading and installing the necessary files. When it was all done I was asked to restart my computer. Upon checking my "Registry" (instructions in first post of this thread) I found my computer now had the older versions of .NetFramework installed and enabled.

This is so important to know......Windows 10 DOES NOT give you these older .NetFramework versions. You have to separately add them to your system and "enable" them for your older programs to work!

As a Windows 10 user and modder with SH4, one of my first additions to my new system was Silent 3ditor (S3D)...a great program for making modifications to the game. After installing it, I attempted to open it, only to be greeted by a message box stating my DirectX files needed to be updated. Hmmmmm, I've got DirectX 12 with this OS!? Why do I need to update my files?? I've since learned that many of the older DirectX files have been eliminated over the past several Windows versions!! In order to give all possible older apps/programs/games a chance to run as expected, you need to add back to your system their specific DirectX files. In Silent 3ditor's case, it couldn't find the proper DirectX files, and stated so with the warning message.

As many of you know, when installing Silent Hunter 4 to your system, you're asked to have DirectX v9.0c files added to your system during the install wizard. In the same way, other programs/games need specific DirectX files to work. There's no harm in having the DirectX files checked for completeness, so its become apparent that even a newer Operating System like Windows 10 needs to have the same checks made. Any Operating System newer than Windows XP should have their DirectX files checked with the following installer, and restore those missing DirectX files that have been removed with the newer versions of DirectX....up to the current DirectX 12 version.

Luckily, Microsoft has made it simple to have your OS DirectX files checked and added-to as needed, with a single download......"DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer" found HERE (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35). The following download page has a description of what it does and how to run it:

https://s25.postimg.cc/spi6kanzz/DirextX_Runtime_DL.jpg

Again, it's my opinion this should be used for ALL Windows Operating Systems, post Windows XP. The fact that specific older DirectX files have been eliminated with the newer versions of DirectX.........it's important to put them back onto your system if you plan to use older programs/games that MAY require those files to be present. There's no harm in being prepared, and you may find that unlike S3D that provided a warning message, another program may not give you such a warning.....leaving you to wonder why the game/program doesn't work as intended.

Checking for all previous DirectX files, and installing those not found is the way to keep your programs/games running as they should.

Tips for stable gameplay:

1. Do not add additional mods to game play unless you are 100% sure they are compatible with the modifications you're presently using. All kinds of stability and gameplay related issues will come into play by having mods "overwrite" each other that wern't made to work with each other. Unless the additional mod you're adding states it's compatible with the first, assume it does not.....don't use it. The term "Mod Soup" is related to using mods that aren't compatible with each other....causing poor game play or CTD's. Avoid "Mod Soup" by knowing what you're adding to your game, and whether its compatible with the version of the game you have, or the present mods you use.

2. Never replay a saved game point that was made with different mods than what you currently are using. The saved game expects to find the same files in-game as when it was made. If a change in mods (adding/removing) is planned, delete your entire Documents/SHIII; SH4; SH5 folder from your computer. This "SHxxx" folder contains your chosen game options, plus this is where the game keeps your game saves. The game will produce a new set of Documents/"SHxxx" folder/files the next time you start the game, with the changes from the mod(s) currently activated included. You'll need to "reset" your particular "options" (like screen resolution), but that's a small price to pay for game stability by eliminating the Documents/SHxxx folder after a problem arises, or when changing mods.

3. Do not jump from Single Missions or from viewing the Museum directly into Campaign mode or vice versa. Before "switching gears", its a good idea to exit the game and restart a new session when making these kinds of changes. When you wish to load an individual Campaign saved game or Single Mission........restart the game first. SH tends to "remember" things from previous sessions which can affect stability, corrupting the game saving function.

4, I've found that giving the game time to load/unload or just allowing it to perform its tasks with plenty of time, has been the best approach. Don't be too quick in moving from a Campaign game to a Single Mission; or exiting from the game, then jumping into JSGME to pull out a mod from the game. I've seen files getting "left behind" due to not allowing the game to "clear" itself before starting another task. TAKE YOUR TIME!

5. Avoid using "autosave" game saves. They can easily become corrupted. There is an autosave made every time you leave port when you start a new mission, I would delete it, and make a self made save instead. But, do it either before entering Port, or just after starting a new mission.

6. Save and exit/restart your game completely once you leave your home base or when approaching home base for docking (approximately 100-200 miles from the home base). When I say "exit", I mean you quit the game completely, returning to Windows. This will improve game stability and unburden the game engine for upcoming rendering issues that may be present when a heavily modded harbor is either entered or exited. I would rely on your "manually saved games" much more than the automatically "saved" points the game provides when in "Port". I would delete all automatically saved points and keep the latest "manually saved" points for future replay.

7. Avoid overwriting of old/previous game saves. Always make a new one, with a new title or numbering system. Keep the most recent couple of saves, while deleting the earlier saves.

8. Occasional "save" and completely exit/restart the game in-between the actions/encounters, or when approaching an area with potentially dense sea/air traffic. At least once in every 72 hours of sim time!

9. Avoid game saving, or the use of high Time Compression after the "action" starts (deck gun attack; approaching/attacking large convoys; approaching ports; evading escorts etc). Try to save games prior to these kinds of expected activities. Saving during high rendering activities will almost always cause issues with replay capabilities.

10. Keep your Time Compression low and try to limit duration of your playing sessions while operating in areas with dense air, sea traffic or near ports etc.

11. When things calm down after successful (or unsuccessful) engagements, surface the boat, get some distance away from the "action" and save the game.

12. Set the game resolution/aspect ratio the same as your Windows "native" screen resolution.

13. If your computer has 4gigs or more of ram memory (and has a 64 bit Operating System), by all means use either "Large Address Aware (https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/large-address-aware.112556/)" (LAA) or a similar app called the "4gig Patch (http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php)". Do not use both......either one or the other! These apps will allow for more memory to be utilized by the game. Both SHIII and SH4 were made prior to the advent of systems having a bounty of memory as they do today (I'm not sure about SH5). It's important to give the game all the possible memory access it can get, especially when adding more content like mods. Having the game access the additional memory will help eliminate slowdowns, speeds up game play, helps the rendering of scenes, lessons the possibility of CTD's, and generally makes for better game play.

14.Do not use the Alt+Tab Windows feature to leave the game, returning to Windows Desktop! Exit the game, and restart the game when returning to Windows. The game has no instruction for this keystroke...do not use it!

I'll be adding more as they come along.

This past week (June 12th) a new update for my Windows 10 version 1607, the "Anniversary Edition" was introduced to my computer. Microsoft is calling it the "Creators Update". After a lengthy download, all was fine with running Windows. Upon checking my "System" Windows 10 version, I see the new version is 1703, with a present build of 15063.332.

I then decided to check my SH4 game by attempting to run it. I got through the opening Ubisoft Video's but then blank......the screen went black, nothing happening. After several minutes I opened "Task Manager" with the old Ctrl+Alt+Del keys and canceled the SH4 loading. Tried it again, same blank screen after the loading video's.

I then went to my games "main" folder and right clicked the "sh4.exe" file to open the "Properties" tab. From there I opened the "Compatibility" tab.

I ran the compatibility troubleshooter:

https://s25.postimg.cc/53r5plkhr/New01.jpg

After some time of churning, the following screen appeared as if to say "I found something, you want to try it"?

I clicked the box:

https://s25.postimg.cc/3ttcajqpr/New02.jpg

Windows must have added whatever thing it figured to do, because I then was presented with the following screen where I was asked to "Test the Program":

https://s25.postimg.cc/ogi1vva4f/New03.jpg

As the above screen showed, the troubleshooter decided the best answer was to set the game into "Compatibility" mode using Vista (Service Pack 2). Up to this point, my Windows 10 worked flawlessly with the game, without any intervention to its "Properties".

Upon clicking the "Test" button, the game cranked up again, this time opening to the "Main Menu" screen. I ran a quick test Campaign, we were in business.

Upon closing out of the game, I was asked to "Save" the new settings:

https://s25.postimg.cc/69v5oe8sf/New04.jpg

At the end, I was greeted with the following screen:

https://s25.postimg.cc/z21x7vgfz/New05.jpg

Whatever the new version of Windows 10 required, the answer was to run the game in a specific "Compatibility" mode. The OS Troubleshooter worked better than expected, and the game seems to load even faster than before!

Hi CS
That is useful information that there is a program that will fix this problem.
Windows 10 Creator version 1703 works initially until Microsoft updates the driver to 382.05 which is incompatible with SH.
I got around the black screen problem by rolling back my driver to the previous version 376.53 and all 3 SH games were working again.

Peter, is the "driver" you're referring to for video?

How did you roll back to an individual version of a driver?

i think is Nvidia driver, but to me works fine 382.53 driver with same version of windows :Kaleun_Salute:

I'm in the process of putting this thread back together after a policy change from PhotoBucket (the holder of my images within this thread). This policy change declares I'm in violation of their rules regarding "3rd Party Hosting"......Photobucket defines 3rd party hosting as the action of embedding an image or photo onto another website.

This policy is new considering I've been with PhotoBucket for over 13 years, and have had no issue, until yesterday (except for their recent excessive advertisement that interferes with viewing/uploading/downloading my images)!

I'll be reconstructing the thread soon as my images become available to me....if they will?!? It would seem PhotoBucket considers my images as their's and have made my access limited.

Which brings me to ask..... Peter you stated:

So, just which driver is it that's causing the issue. One for the "Video", "Audio", some other process that requires a rollback in driver version?

Thank you Peter, I'll have to check my own set up.

I use an AMD Radeon card, RX 460. Up to this latest "Creators Update", I didn't have to do anything with my games execution files to have the game run effortlessly. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, my TroubleShooter program has my game running in a "Vista Compatibility" mode as a fix now. I'll have to see if rolling back my Video Driver would help in displaying the game, or perhaps AMD has a new driver that catches up to what changed in the "Creators Update" version of Windows 10?!?

What folder did you install the game in? You want to stay away from the Program Files directories. If you're on Windows 10 and have the recent updates, that may have trashed your video driver. In THEBERBSTER's signature is a link to SH4 Tutorials, and at the top of that page is Total Black Screen > Sound No Picture > Picture No Sound Fixes (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2408009&postcount=17). See if any of that can help you also.

If you install the game to a folder such as "C:\Ubisoft \ Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific", the SH4.exe file should be right in there, along with about 3 or 4 dozen other files and folders.

Type the words "Folder Options" into your Windows search bar, at the bottom left on Windows 10, or on the Start button with Win8.1 and 7. I haven't a clue how you'd do it if in plain Win8... Anyway, run that applet, and on the "View" tab, down just a bit from the top should be a check box for "Hide extensions for known file types". Un-tick that check box, click on "OK", and then go look in the "c:/ games /ubisoft /sh4" folder. What were listed previously as "SH4" and "SH4" should now show as "SH4.exe" and "SH4.ico"...

Yes you have missed something. The "main game" folder definitely has an "execution" (.exe) file....or it wouldn't be able to launch the game at all. You may have put a shortcut for starting the game on your desktop, but it still follows a path back to the games "SH4.exe" file in order to launch the game.

As explained in the previous replies, the games SH4.exe file "Properties" needs to have the "Attributes" set to allow for both Reading and Writing to it. By removing the "Read only" flag, this will allow the execution file to be changed by LAA....giving the game more access to the memory you may have. Hopefully, you have more than 2 gigs of memory in your computer?

Poppeye, have you read THIS (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2491418&postcount=11) reply regarding the latest Windows 10 updates? As I've stated, this new update has required me to run the game in a "compatible" mode in order to run the game without it getting a black screen at startup. This wasn't the case with my first couple of updates for Windows 10, but it is now. You may need to do the same, which is the very reason why you need to find your games execution (SH4.exe) file and run the "Troubleshooter" feature to change the way the game is loaded/launched in Windows 10. As I point out, running the game in "Compatibility mode" of a "Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)" did the trick after this latest Windows 10 update.

I'm wondering what's going on?? Why would images just not show after they were there a short time ago? The site I used after the PhotoBucket debacle(where they demanded payment of $350.00 to access your images due to them changing policy regarding "third party image hosting") is a site called Postimage.org. My images are there, and seem just fine with their "links" to SubSim…..I have no idea why they aren't being displayed??

If you "edit" one of your post's you'll find the "link" to your images, (Postimage changed their extension from s25.postimg.org to s25.postimg.cc) you just need to change that extension reference.....change the ".org" to ".cc" and your back in business.

Any "new' links coming from your PostImage images have this change in them.....you just need to change your older posts, where you've used the older address, as a link to the image with the ".cc" as the extension PostImage is now using.

Wow Peter, that's not what I had to do. By using the "Edit" feature of the original post, the images were still there in "address" form. Here's an example:

https://s25.postimg.org/s535hlurj/abcderg.jpghttps://s25.postimg.org/s535hlurj/745a3311-e75c-42d5-85fd-eae535da167f.jpg{/IMG]

(I had to change the bracket in order to have the line show).

This line showed where the image should have been in the text. I just had to change the postimg.org to postimg.cc and the image was good. I [I]do notice that on my Windows XP computer I don't have the image "address" as I do on my other computer running Windows 10. It's the difference between the OS that allows for the [IMG] Address to show or not I guess?

That horse of yours sounds strong enough to pull against a semi-tractor... You shouldn't have issues except around harbors or lots of planes. What mods are you running? How much do you have running in the background of Win10? Look in the SysTray (lower-right, by the clock), and see what-all is going there. If you are using a "Cloud" service, that might do the trick. Also, some AV scanners "live time" scanning might be hitting every file as the game opens them. Main thing though, is to open LAA again and select the SH4.exe file. Make certain that the LAA is set to "True". If you're in the "Basic" mode, it will have a tick mark in the check box when you select it. If you're using "Intermediate" or "Advanced" mode, it should say "LAA True". If not, then check the file in Windows Explorer, and make sure the Read-only attribute isn't set on its Properties page. Then use LAA and enable SH4.exe. Even still, in "high-traffic" areas of the game, the game's engine can't handle things smoothly, especially if you're using time compression... :salute:

As they say..... It's not the size of the worm that catches fish, it's how you wiggle it!

Since this older game was designed for specific computer specifications, having newer/better/bigger computers doesn't translate into better game play.

You need to check your Windows 10 setup and see if the NetFramework 4.0 is on your computer....it should be with Windows 10. Refer back to the earlier posts of this thread to know how to check for this.

Then you'll need to make sure you've downloaded the correct version of Large Address Aware that works with a 4.0 NetFramework......that's the download called "laa_2_0_4_NetFramework_4_5.zip". If you've downloaded/installed the "laa_2_0_4.zip"....you've chosen wrongly.

If you have downloaded the wrong version, I'm suspecting you'll need to remove completely the game from your computer and reinstall as my instructions provides.

If you're certain you are correct with the downloaded version of LAA, then your next step is to check the DirectX files by running the "DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer" found HERE (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35). This will update Windows 10 to include the past .dll's of the different DirectX versions that it no longer keeps in its current release. Yes that's right, DirectX doesn't keep tract of older files that are required to run older games. As a matter of fact, it removes the older files....you have to re add them in order to have them available for an older game/program to run correctly. That's what the Microsoft Runtime Web Installer will do.

If after checking/completing these tasks above, and you still feel you're not getting things to run correctly, you'll need to get back with us.

BTW, I noticed in Task Manager, SH4 says "32 bit" after it in the Background Processes even though my laptop is running W10 64 bit vers . Does this make SH4 run differently? Is there anything I can/should do to get SH4 to run properly on a 64 bit system?

My newer computer plays the game just fine, actually much better than my "modding" computer which is an XP Operating System; 32bit; Pentimum4; 2gig maximum RAM memory computer (I can't even use LAA with it due to the limited memory it has!?).

My newer Windows 10; 64bit; 16gig RAM; LAA enabled SH4 game hums' along with no issues at all!

The fact the game was designed for 32bit systems makes no difference.....a 64bit system will run the game just fine. However, as I point out in this thread, using the correct LAA enabler is important (either the one used for the older 3.5 version of NetFramework; or the newer 4.0/4.5 version).

As well as making sure your computer has the older DirectX files that the game expects to find (use the "DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35)" to check and add as needed).

Lastly, allow the OS to check for trouble with the games start-up "sh4.exe" file by using the file's "Compatibility" tab, then using the "Run Compatibility Troubleshooter" to diagnose the file as defined HERE (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2491418&postcount=11). Windows does a remarkable job in doing this automatically.....allow it to correct as needed.

Yes of course you have a link to the Large Address Aware thread (found here (https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/large-address-aware.112556/)). It's the first link in this thread found on page one. First of all Capn, thanks a bunch for this TEC post!!!!!!

I'm in the process of uninstalling / reinstalling SH4 to get it to my Games folder.

One thing of note- for people doing what I'm doing or who are reinstalling SH4 to see if it fixes a problem. I'd recommend adding the step of running a registry cleaner after the uninstall.

Hmmm, I think a light bulb went on with another game. Have not been able to run BoB II wings of Victory (The updated A2A version) reliably since installing Win7. Under Win10 it crashes all the time. Just hit me that I've never seen anyone mention using LAA or the 4gb patch software on it. Will have to give it a try.

03-06-19, 11:04 AM
One more thing I ran into. Depending on the card and driver you're using, the Win10 scaling options may be causing a crash. So here's one thing you can try.

If you are here, you should already know how to get to the sh4.exe and open the properties window. Go to page one if you don't.

With the properties window open (See attached file):
1. Click on the "Change High DPI settings button. This will open another window.
2. Check the box "Use this setting to fix scaling problems . . ."
3. Click on the "Open advanced scaling settings" link. This will open the associated window.
4. Click the "Turn off the the "let windows try to fix apps so they're not blurry" switch. I was told that because you are accessing this through the properties window, it will only affect the executable currently selected
5. Close the advanced scaling settings window
6. Check the "High DPI scaling override" checkbox. Make sure Application is selected in the drop down window.

Now turning off the Advanced scaling and selecting the high DPI override may be redundant, but I didn't find something telling me this was specifically so.

Many older games created before Win10 and before high res displays have issues with the Win10 scaling, even if they've been upgraded to include those display settings as an option. The issue has to do with the in game text scaling rather than the graphics scaling.

dave,
you need to remove the read-only status.
open a windows explorer window and browse to the folder where SH4 is installed.
right-clock on the highest level SH4 folder and select Properties. Uncheck the read-only box and click OK. you will be asked at what level do you wish to apply the change, select "this folder and all subfolders and files". the process will take a few minutes, so have patience. :-)
this should cure your problem.

What's important for everyone who has a Windows 10 computer is to keep your computer up to date with the latest Updates provided by Microsoft.

This latest set of Updates took about an hour to accomplish, which is something I think everyone should keep tract of.....knowing your system needs an Update, and giving it time to do just that!

Here's the latest update's found on my computer with their "Successfully Installed" Dates. As you can see there were actually four added today:

https://i.postimg.cc/hvnpMw8R/Screen-Shot033-copy.jpg

Two, KB4494441 "Cumulative Updates"

One, KB4497932 "Security Update"

One, KB4499405 "Cumulative Update"

All four done today.

However, to have the "Windows Update" return the following screen of "You're up to date", I had to check twice to let the "Cumulative Update KB4494441" Download/Install before completion. Why? I have no idea, but not until the Cumulative Update KB4494441 was Downloaded twice and the computer Restarted twice did I finally get a current "You're up to date" OK from Microsoft.

This brings up an important point I think a lot of gamers aren't doing....especially when trying to play the SH4 game. Players are not allowing their Windows 10 to Update before sitting down to a gaming session. Most of us have the Windows Update running in the background, to freely Download/Install Updates as they become available. But, we don't check to see if the Update process is occurring before we start using the game. I believe to have your computer NOT to be slowed down when playing SH4, make sure Windows Update isn't running in the background.

Getting a "You're up to date" from Microsoft before executing a game (or any other side program you may wish to use), must be done. And, it's important to check twice, since this latest KB4494441 required two installs before completion. Finish "Updating" before starting other programs that may need all the memory of your computer to function properly.

When playing SH4 with mods like Fotrs Ultimate you'll need all the computer resources you can give it....... making sure you follow the basic ideas in this thread, along with allowing Windows 10 to Update properly will help in keeping this old game running as expected. As a general rule, manually check Windows Update for new downloads every time you start your computer, or before starting a gaming session.

However for anyone that has their steam directory configured to not save things in the watchdog'd directories like on another disk or partition like my J:\ 4TB sata ssd. It has 2 partitions one of which is the medium speed Steam directory that games that don't have huge or small but rather medium reads to load into the game or to load saves etc.

Anyway, this way if you download the game from Steam and run it, then do the german missions dlc for the 1.5, then all this crap is installed in a not watchdog'd directory and for me on windows 10 x64 1909 build 18363.657 the .exe isn't r/o it's got no attributes of that kind. the LAA tool for .net 4.5 worked fine without any dickering. It worked fine until I was getting chased by a DD and it CTD'd, so I came sniffing around for the LAA thanks for the thread!

Ahoy,

Do you have any suggestions for me? I followed the instructions in this thread for LAA. After locating the executable file in step 1 and checking the save box in step 2, advanced mode always indicates C:\SH4\SH4.exe with a False flag. A settings.sav file is created, but apparently it is not saving the check in step 2.

Thanks for any suggestions,
GC

Ahoy, greatcouloir... :Kaleun_Cheers:

1st, did you open the folder that SH4 is installed, scroll to the SH4.exe click on it to highlight it & in the menu up top, click on the properties selection there, to open up SH4.exe's properties menu & ensure that it is NOT set to write only... :hmmm:

This is an important step, as when adding in mods, the .exe needs to be allowed to be written into for the mods to work... & think that would also apply here, to Large Address Aware (or LAA as some call/refer to it by... :yep:)

Only other thing that I can think of.. would be the possibility of a bad install/corruption of LAA, in which case... a dump & reinstall would resolve that... & Yes, it can, does & will occur.. as that will with any app, program, anything related to computers... & downloading, installing stuff. Murphy's law... in effect.

Most game launcher's if you grab your games through those... now include a means to verify files... that process, just... hasn't made it to other areas... yet.
Would suggest, a check on the .exe properties, 1st.. if still no joy, then a dump & reinstall... as I mentioned, should resolve the issue.

Hope this info helps... :yep: :shucks:

Mad Mardigan,

You were right on the money with your advise. The box was checked Read only. After making the suggested adjustment, LAA behaved as advertised.

Thank you for your speedy and effective assistance.
