View Full Version : correct English pronouncing
Was told by my Sister today that my Niece got scolded and reprimanded by her English teacher. The reason was that my niece claimed that the English word "calm" should be pronounced ... (do not know how to write the word "calm" in the way it should be pronounced) She was told that the word "calm" should be pronounced as "Claim" or as my sister said
Teachers claim that in "real" English the word "calm" is pronounced as "claim".

"real" English the word "calm" is pronounced as "claim".
Nope 'Calm' \ˈkäm, ˈkälm, ˈkam, ˈkȯ(l)m\ is pronounced like 'balm' \ˈbä(l)m\ short 'a' sound: silent L (soothing panacea or unguent) Otherwise a statement such as: "The 'Calm before the storm' which may 'claim' your life...unless U spread a little balm upon the stormy waters" would B a little confusing... woodn't it. :O:
Was also told it is the same teachers who could not see the difference between "holly" and "holy"
Until some month ago, I had only read about the lack of knowledge our teachers have. I have never thought it would happen to my own Niece-having a English Teacher who is lacking a lot of English knowledge

Tell that to her teacher.
Her English is almost perfect, even though she is only 10 years old.

MarkusIf English isn't the teachers first language I could understand a bit of confusion. I grew up west of the Mississippi and sometimes I need a translator when I visit relatives in Boston. ;).

I do tend to trip my tongue when trying to pronounce some words in English
but after a long day work when I have to switch between Dutch, Spanish, English, German(Shut it Schroeder :O:) a bit of French and Italian it can be quite the car crash when it comes to my pronouncing of words in any language.
Mapuc, the English word 'calm' sounds very close to the Danish word 'karm'
Get a new teacher, preferably one that has not studied at the Donald Duck School of English:know:
I have a question, too.
How do you pronounce the name of the English bicycle company "Raleigh"?
"Raaleigh" like in raw or "Ralleigh" like in ralley (Dakar)?
I own a Raleigh bike and I want to talk about it in proper English.

No kidding? Thank you Jim. So I guess, I can now stop arguing with the local Raleigh dealer about the correct pronounciation.

And that's where dialect and accents come in. I'm sure Jim's pronunciation is the correct one, since 'Raleigh' is originally an English name. If you're in America, though, don't be surprised if you hear someone pronounce it "rawlee". :D

Get a new English teachers-it is probably easier said than done. The teachers are employed by the municipality and this school in which my niece goes
Get a new teacher-then my niece has to change school or my sister has to run a long process to get the teachers removed.
Another major problem is as follows-It seems that my niece is better at English than what this teachers is.
However, it is only the teachers who can give points(or what you call it in English speaking countries) for how good a student is in her English lessons

In the UK it is generally referred to as 'Marks' a kind of assessment system where marks/points are awarded to reflect the quality of the work.

hit the sound symbol, gives you both English English and American English.Technically that should read "The Queens English" instead of English English, right? :O:
We say "Oxford English" for British English standard language here in Germany, to point out that we are not subject to the Crown.
And "Rex" is a dog's name, typically for a German shepherd male, for female German shepherd's it is "Blondi", you know.
Your law cases: "Rex vs. Smith & Carpenter" etc. etc., very strange :hmmm:

That afternoon Hitler summoned Professor Werner
Haase from the emergency hospital to the bunker to
stage a dress rehearsal of his own suicide.
Hitler no longer trusted the SS and he wanted an
assurance that the poison capsules he had been
provided with by the SS doctor Ludwig Stumpfegger
actually worked. The guinea pig chosen for this
experiment was his beloved Alsatian Blondi.
Hitler's nurse, Erna Flegel, said in 2005 that Blondi's death had affected the people in the bunker more than Eva Braun's suicide had.

When you call your dog 'Rex' you are simply naming him 'King'. The law frequently uses latin terminology.
Currently, with a female as the head of state, court cases are: 'Regina' v...
and for those of you who are unclear 'Regina' is pronounced in the same way as...STOP CLIVE - JUST STOP RIGHT THERE!
