From where can one download the playable demo?

We are currently working on a completely remade demo. We have implemented most of the features we described in the kickstarter video, and also updated the graphics. The game is better now than ever, with many features we hadn't even thought of when we launched the kickstarter.

Please check out our Facebook-page for updates.

More information will be published shortly.

Hello!

Time for an update since the game
has gone through some radical changes in the last months. All players are
now able to move around freely on the sub, and lots of new features has been added. More updates coming soon!

This is a short video showing the current state of the demo.

Damn how long did that take you, modelling a post wwII guppy boat is taking me forecer to even get the conning tower done. Your interior with my boat physics would be a great combo.

I'd call it a great tech demo but a gamble trying a kickstarter on basically co-op only.

The mesh controls are REALLY smooth and the audio for them set up well.

Definitely has a future I just worry about a failing kickstarter for you, but I hope all goes well so development can continue and speed up.

Is it a realism choice to have no GUI at all?

Hello,

I'm really liking the demo and I hope that your kickstarter campaign succeeds, however I'm having trouble connecting to friends who are also playing the game, could you post a tutorial on how to set up a game to play with friends over the internet who are not on your Local area connection, or if anyone else happens to know how to do this could clue me in?

Hi! I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble connecting. We are making a tutorial on how to connect, but it's not finished yet.

We are also adding feedback messages when something goes wrong with the game. Currently, it just fails silently.

Most likely the cause of the connection failure is that the host is behind a firewall that refuses the connection, or that the client is connecting to the wrong IP.

The IP shown when you click show in the game might be a local address if the host is connected via a router. To find the host IP, the host can go to
https://www.whatismyip.com/

How to let the game through the firewall varies between different operating systems. On windows 10, go to the firewall settings. Then select allow an app or feature through windows firewall. Then find hmsmarulken144 in the list and check the checkbox.

I hope this helps!

We are aware that the project is not ideal for a Kickstarter campaign, but we do not have much choice at this point. We really need the funding in order to finish the game.

The lack of GUI is in fact a realism choice. We decided on this design in order to enhance the feeling of really being on the sub. We belive that a first-person game like ours really benefits from it.

how did i have missed this so long ?

everything i saw on videos is on my likes for a sim !! surelly the best effort i have seen so far !

Amazing work in the hydrophone-radar room something that is really missing !! (especially the hydrophone device totally captured me !)
Amazing work on the map too and especially the ruler with the active accurate range marking plus the relative to boat bearings is exactly what is needed there ! you guys know very well what you are doing !

for the periscope i would like to see a horizontal split prism too for getting AoB and also the rangefinder

Definetely i will put some money to your kickstarter page !

A big bravo to you guys !

Thanks for the quick reply Oscar I appreciate it very much, I was only able to do a partial test as currently my friends are offline, however I was able to connect to myself by running 2 instances of the game one on each monitor I was able to join my own game by using the IP listed in the game and also by using the "localhost" option as well but when I tried using the IP listed by the website I could not join my own game so I guess i'll try to continue using the listed IP as my friend and i have tried doing before (btw thats a nice feature to show the IP of your own computer) but since I'm connecting to myself I'm probably bypassing the firewall issue so that must be it. I'll post again with the result of my next attempt when i try to connect to my friend. I hope i can get it to work as i really look forward to some CO OP submarine operation and its the perfect tool to showcase the game to my friends, what better than an interactive demo that you can play.

PS should we always leave the port as 7777 or would that have to be changed for some reason?

Im running the sub single handed at the moment, and preparing to be able to understand all the stations in order to help crew when they join in.. also have a teamspeak server ready to go. Send me a pm if interested in setting up a time to join.

The radio room does use real morse code by the way, and allows sending encrypted messages to other subs on various frequencies.. (chat channels with enigma) - big thumbs up!

Well, just tried a coop game with a guy, but we were unable to connect in the game.... I have sent a message to the devs, maybe they can provide a procedure.

Leo_93
05-28-16, 02:20 PM
hmm I wonder if you were running into the same problem my friend and I were running into, the devs have suggested it may be a firewall issue and that they are currently working on a tutorial. I believe I have allowed the game through the firewall but I have been unable to test this so far. also I wish the firewall and Norton were a little more transparent in what it blocks cause I could never find evidence of it blocking the game before I made changes to the settings but I guess it could also have been my friends firewall blocking him from connecting to me also.

If you have the time, I could recommend visiting the HMS Nordkaparen which is a museum sub in Gothenburg. It could be most useful for getting the interior of the sub looking right. There is also the U-3 in Malmö.

Cpt-Maxim

I am in subsim teamspeak now, ready to test multiplayer - and can stay for a few hours.

Edit: Over the internet didn't work with two people who came on teamspeak, but we are now looking to try LAN in our own homes by running two pc's.. to confirm that portion of the networking is "working or not". Will update later.

(I hosted and port forwarded 7777 and setup my internal ip to be used as seemed necessary)

Usurpator
05-29-16, 04:21 PM
Several people have contacted us and reported that they cannot connect through the internet.

It seems that the (poorly documented) library we used to make the networking portion of the game doesn't handle NAT punchthrough natively, meaning that if the host is behind a router, the connection will fail.

This means that the host will have to configure their router to forward the port to the internal IP address in order for the game to connect properly.

We are working on solving this issue.

If you don't want to configure the router (or if that for some reason doesn't work) you can use a program like Evolve (https://www.evolvehq.com/welcome)
to create a virtual private network. That will take care of this issue.

Instructions:
http://hmsmarulken.se/HowToJoin.html

We want to stress that this is a workaround to the problem, and not a permanent solution!

That sounds great! We did get a tour of the modern sub HMS Gotland last year, but the older ones would be better!

I've been testing and emailing the devs regularly. I got the router to work without the evolve program and tested with two guys.
I do not recommend this method to anyone who is not comfortable with the risk.
I made several changes to my router.
1. I port forwarded 7777, but when starting the game, we randomly picked port 1234, so all players entered 1234 instead of 7777 and it worked if I was the host, but not if the other guys hosted. Probably because of step #2
2. I set my router to DMZ.
3. All three of us tried to run the game in administrator mode, by right clicking the .exe and choosing run as admin.

My belief is that because I also opened my router to DMZ- demilitarized zone which is dangerous as far as being attacked by viruses, or pirates, that I had more success.
Some of these changes introduced variables that I have not weeded out completely.. still testing variations.
Not all routers have the same success, some are poorly designed, work unreliably, or have less software switches inside for choices..

Onkel Neal
05-30-16, 06:26 AM
Max, good work. I will be online Tues around 0800 for some testing. I don't think I can make those kind of changes to my router, since I am using a mobile as a hotspot, so I will try the Evolve solution first.

Just tried the evolve method the devs put up on their site (http://hmsmarulken.se/HowToJoin.html) with one other person and we were able to make it work so it looks like we have a viable workaround until a proper fix is implemented. Thanks again Devs for helping all of us out on the teamspeak servers the other day for a few hours despite what time is was for you :) now it will be much easier to spread the word on this one of a kind game now that we can crew a sub together.

I made a rule after getting burned on Up Front not to do non-Shadowrun kickstarters anymore, but I would contribute to this more than the value of 4 pack if the stretch goals were gameplay related instead of VR-related. I would encourage the devs to check this out before putting too much time and money into VR development: https://www.quora.com/How-big-an-issue-is-the-nausea-problem-for-Virtual-Reality-products/answer/Steve-Baker-9?share=1

If there were any prospect at all of larger maps, time compression, and moddability, this might be my perfect subsim. I've always hated having to do everything yourself in single player subsims on "maximum realism" settings, but when the AI's doing most of the work, there's not much gameplay.

Hello gang,

It's been a while. The new game looks interesting. I'm downloading the demo and we'll give it a go. Not sure how the 4 player co-op will work. Does this mean I can't play if my other 3 team mates aren't online? I have many questions but will hold back till after playing the demo :)

Good luck.....

I am not too impressed with the sim, it puts too much effort on the player and now you need more people to use it effectively and getting a team to play the sim is not always easy.

I don't see myself going forward with this game...

Having said that, all the best!!!

Me and my friend have both installed evolve correctly (we can see each others' ip) and have the game and evolve allowed through our firewalls. Still we can't connect to each other. When one of us tries to connect to the other through the evolve ip and port 7777 it acts as if the "ok" button to connect doesn't do anything. Any ideas? (we can both ping each other on evolve with times of under 100ms if that's of any use).

Edit: We fixed it through running as administrator :)

BONUS QUESTION- If you can name every NAVAL game shown on the MonopolyNaval board below, you get as many free copies of that image you wish to download absolutely free, without obligation, no dice, no paper money included.

Don't misunderstand my quotes below, this is just one man's opinion, backed up with 35 years of programming software, and playing earlier model software from others which understandably came with lesser capabilities for older PC's, with worse hardware.. see image below..

Batara72
Not sure how the 4 player co-op will work. It works with good people who want to operate in a manner showing they are educated in their role and having fun in their role. Your job as captain goes beyond running the periscope and includes promoting to the right groups of people until you find the 3-4 that are ready.. the rest should swab the deck. Or just run the sub solo and/or understaffed.. see reply to next quote.

Definition: MultiCREW - (Several people or more in a single vehicle - distinctly different and in addition to Multiplayer)

See reply to above quote, because any "real" sim ever made had the ability to run Multi-CREW in a single sub, otherwise it was never made as a "real" sim.. and instead it was just a physics based solo player per vehicle experience as far as subs go.

This is the very first non-military or non-classified software the general public ever had a chance to try (for FREE) with sub Multi-CREW. It has different expectations than the standard solo video game. Otherwise, you get a full refund for any valid complaints during the free download period and a free delete option already installed on your computer. :)

Hey! Just downloaded the game and I'm quite amazed at it.

Although just wondering if it's possible to have 5 players on one Sub?
As of lately me and my mates have been doing LAN games together and we're looking for other games to play.
Still I'm going to suggest this one to them regardless of the crew limit.

Will be keeping an eye on this.
Keep it up Devs! It's looking amazing.

It is currently only possible to be 4 players in one sub. However, it is possible to create several subs with 1-4 players on each of them and play cooperatively in the same level :)

I have checked this forum less and less lately. I've grown tired of long loading times and CTDs with SH5, and lost interest with the dated visuals of SH3/4. Ever hopeful for a successor to SH5 (done right, finally?).

Was sent an email telling me of this new(ish) development. I'm behind it 100%! Take my money, take it all!!! Just make this game a reality, make it good, and do all the things we wished ubisoft had done but didn't.

Already I'm designing a time machine to pop out in 2017 to play this, but until then I'll enjoy the alpha, *which seems more functional than SH5 1.0 release!

Thank you for what you are doing. Seriously, this needs to happen. I hope this forum is still active enough to have the critical mass needed. The Subsim community has always been effective, I have to believe that this kickstarter will work. Until I know for sure, I'll pledge as much as possible

The most interesting comment I've heard this week while on Subsim teamspeak, was from Domestos as he ran engineering...

4 of us were crewing my sub named "Triton". We were being hunted by a DD, and we took turns being the captain..

Paraphrasing - at one point Domestos said "With a new game like this that lets you multicrew, It's interesting to see what different captains do for defensive tactics all in real time while in the same sub together"
