Question Answered. Thanks!
hello all o7
the silent hunter series always caught my eye when i was younger but never got into it. recently i decided to give things ago. I had gotten SH3 on steam during a sale for super cheap and have been playing with it + GW3 + huge list of other mods and have been enjoying it for the most part.
i recently watched some SH4 videos on youtube and was really impressed with the changes made and workings with mods like TMO. Then the added uboat missions and i believe atlantic campaign (mod?) it sounds great.
so my question is this:
1) am i going to get enough of a gameplay enjoyment boost for the $20 to 'upgrade' from SH3 --> 4? I understand there is a difference in sandbox style open-ness but SH4 does look impressive.
2) If yes; where is the best place to buy it? is Steam version ok or do i need to find the gold box on amazon or something for example? ive read that a lot of the download versions dont have the proper patch version incoporated (1.4 or 1.5) and dont want to get screwed over on my purchase if that is the case.
thank you!
(ps...if you have a recommendation on best place to buy it for price or know someone selling a used copy id be more than happy to take suggestions. Grad student living on loans atm and the wife wont justify another video game purchase most likely lol)
Best place? If you can, I would recommend buying it from Amazon via the Subsim link here, because that way Amazon gets a cut of the sale :yep:

Otherwise, Steam is okay, but because it forces you to run the game via Steam (and creates problems if you want to modify the .exe, along with sticking the game in the Steam folder where it can be easy to confuse things with mods), I prefer other options first. Gamersgate ( http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-SH4GE/silent-hunter-4-gold-edition ) is a good other option.

Ok, thanks for the input. i probably could of worded the 'best place' question. my main concern was if example the steam copy only installed w/ say 1.3 game version and/or caused other conflicts which i know steam has a tendency to do sometimes especially with modding.
ill go with the hard-copy version like you recommended from either amazon or gamergaste.
thanks o7

I think you mean that it is SubSim who receive a small percentage cut of the sale :03:

Welcome to SubSim bowsewr :sunny:
Thank you for the kind words =D
I am pretty excited to get into silent hunter series after always seeing in on the shelves of CompUSA and BestBuy as a kid. (i do miss the days of going to the store and going up and down the isles and isles of PC games in BOXES....something about looking at a game box and holding it)
any suggestions for mods in addition to TMO to get started with? (i can reference the great stickied links, just see if you have a personal preference)

A wise shopper is an informed one.
Another site is iNetVideo (http://www.inetvideo.com/products/silent-hunter-iv-wolves-of-the-pacific-gold-edition-pc). The DVD Gold Edition is today selling for $14.99, excluding shipping. Shipped from UbiSoft's Canadian Division in Montreal. Got mine in four days after making the purchase.
Steam had been selling the SH4 (version 1.3) as its basic download. As far as I know, they still are. Version 1.3 is a terrible version of the game, that required version 1.4 to fix some of what 1.3 changed. Why does Steam do it? To get you to purchase their second offering...... their U-Boat Missions Addon download (version 1.5) for extra money!
GET A DISK COPY OF THE GAME.

I bought my Gold version, 1.5, at ebay for $12 a couple months ago.
Yet, another source to buy the game from. (Although mine was new)

By all means, GET A DISK COPY OF THE GAME!

The game pricing is like a futures commodity on the Chicago Stock Exchange!! It fluctuates up and down and even goes "off market" from time to time.
I bought my Gold Edition (new) from the iNetVideo site two years ago for $8.99, plus the $2.50 shipping. It was for sale at that price for another couple of months, then nothing......the game wasn't listed in their inventory at all. At the same time, Silent Hunter V's DVD was selling for only $4.99 new (all of iNetVideo offerings are new).
I noticed last summer iNetVideo had SH4 back in their inventory.....with a price of $19.99. Today they have dropped the price to the standing $14.99 selling price. With no Silent Hunter V offering at all. :dead:

I noticed my ebay link is no longer good. It's been sold.
I don't see a 'cheap' English version for sale today. Maybe tomorrow. :03:
Your analogy, futures commodity on the Chicago Stock Exchange, is very accurate and funny, CapnScurvy. :haha: :yeah:
At any rate, make sure you get a disk copy of the game. :yeah:

I play on Steam. If you do that though, do make sure you get the U-boat expansion. Here's my mod list:
Generic Mod Enabler - v2.6.0.157
[C:\Steam\steamapps\common\silent hunters wolves of the pacific\MODS]
1_TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5
RSRDC_TMO_V502
RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1
1.5_Optical Targeting Correction 031312 for RSRDCv502
1.5_OTC_Realistic Scopes for 16 to 9 RSRDCv502
Improved Ship Physics 2.6_TMO_RSRDC_OTC
If you're a manual targeting kind of guy then I highly recommend this setup.
Welcome aboard!
