We have a thread in the GT forum where people introduce themselves, post a pic and a little bio. I'm starting one here, because nothing helps a community more than openess and friendship. So, come on into the room, take off your hat, and put your boots on the table.

Most of you know me by now, but in short, I'm a native Texan, 50, located in Houston, and I like long walks in the moonlight. Have to consider myself a fan of Theodore Dreiser, Bruce Springsteen, and Wolf Peterson. Motorcycle rider since forever! Been playing computer games off and on since 1979. Blue Max was my first simulation.

Hi all

Hello fellow simmers! I've been here awhile (2008), took a 7 year LOA b/c my job kept me away from my simulations. I have given up the ghost, so to speak, sold my truck and folded up the business. That's a story for another time :). I'm glad Subsim is still alive and well, and have always appreciated the info contained in the forums, so much I just donated today to help keep it going. As for me, 43yo, from Sumter, SC. I love anything with computers, lately except my own...lol (God I hate MS). Former US Marine, and now former owner operator (20 years), currently involved with operating my own VA (PITA :/\\!!), alpha/beta tester for various games (WOT, WOWS, WOWP, MWO, AW, RoF, and WT), and finally getting back to sinking the dreaded IJN!!!! lol, I hope I can be a contributor in some way to the forums. Hi all. I'm Kristine. I'm 42 and from Indiana. I'm a super silly turbogeek, which is my username at GameFAQs haha. I thought SH5 would be fun, and it is. I really don't know what I'm doing, but I'm learning! I don't really hit much, but I think the important thing is just enjoying it, I love sneaking up on ships, and I'm pretty excited when I hit something and sink it, because it's actually kind of rare. I'll get better though. Most of this stuff I don't understand, but like I said I'll get better, and I'm really enjoying the game.

You guys have helped me a lot, and the mods are pretty great, as is the advice in the forums, so thanks for that!

Hello Everyone! I'm happy to become a member here!

I bought this game thinking, "Finally a sub sim that can satisfy all my fundamental wishes!"
My frustration mounted.
I Googled around and landed here.
Spend a few days downloading stuff and trying to make this game sweet. 90% success.
I keep doing some things wrong and getting glitches.
Found out that by donating five bucks I could get a mega mod 50 files in one thing-a-ma-jig.
Downloaded that and wolves of steel - I hope one of these will bring me joy. I watched some let's plays of other people using these mega mods and it seems hopeful.

I'm not designed to cope with all this hahaha
Wish me luck!

Hi. My name is Chris.

I'm not technically a SH5 player yet, but I ordered the game at Amazon and am awaiting its arrival any day.

I have been playing "Aces Of The Deep" in the old pre-Pentium days, on my "486" CPU PC and later "Tom Clancy SSN" and have enjoyed both games.

A few days ago, one of my favorite Youtubers uploaded a Let's Play video of him playing "Silent Hunter 3" and I commented that it is a pity that submarine simulations seem to be a dead genre, because I hadn't heard anything about new submarine games coming out in the last 10 years or so. Somebody told me then that "Silent Hunter 5" exists and is relatively recent and I was immediately interested, because the ability to walk around on your submarine and interact with the crew was always something I had been missing in those older games and SH 5 looked very good.

I was also told though that the game is horribly buggy and apparently almost unplayable, so that cooled down my interest immediately again, of course.

Then somebody else said there is a mod pack that fixes the game and makes it playable and I should search for "Sober Mega Mod", which is what brings me here.

Now that I looked into the description of the mod pack, it seems though as if it changes a lot about the game and I'm not really interested in stuff like having more mines in ports or changing the mission criteria from tonnage to date and stuff like that.

I just want a well running, bugg-less version of the original game, that is all.

Are there mods or mod packs that do just that, fix the game without changing it significantly?

I'd be grateful for any advise in that direction.

Alright, another newbie saying hi!
I am actually not much of a navy-guy (I work in the Army!) but there is something about the U-boots that excites me. Way back I played SH3 but when SH4 came out I lost the joy of SH (probleby because I have been playing to much...)

So Now I just bought SH5 and have installed The Wolfes of Steel mod serie and are trying to get back into it. Just missed a Slow Merchant with 3 torpedos at 1500m... so I got allot to get back and re-learn...

I'm not new to Subsim but new to involvement with the forum having sailed in and out since 2009 and SH4 and the then :new: SH5 which I bought the first day it was released which I don't wish to knock we all no its shortcomings in any case the job of bringing it up to very high standard of playability function and graphics has been done here . All involved have my utmost respect, Well done :yeah:. :salute: :sign_yeah:

For the first time I've started to get involved with this forum and hope to give some valuable and interesting input as many of you do now :up:

Arma 3 is my other passion I have been heavily involved with Mission Making Scripting/Coding and some basic Modding/Retexturing. Up until recently I have been Hosting running missions linked with my Teamspeak Server using a Mod called Taskforce Radio with a big emphasis on Realism. I'm taking a break from it to concentrate on SH

In the past few days I've posted a few comments I ask a lot of questions :know: and hope not to make a nuisance of myself also I'm just trying to find my way round navigating the threads being new to this I find it a little difficult to find/retrace items of interest sometimes, threads seem to splinter all over the place sometimes



Recently I have been comparing SH to new tiles and find it amazing how well its Graphics/Physics etc have stood up to the test of time. It still outshines :sunny: most in its sheer beauty , there is still lots of life in the old Boot ! :ahoy: :lurk:

Howdy from Arkansas (Third Mountain on the Left),

Signed up about a month ago because I saw a post about Enigma Rising Tide on the internet. Any how, I did the download and it still won't work on windows 7. No big thing I thought....:06: So snooping around the site I found the store and purchased the Naval Combat Pack though the Affy Link. But I didn't know I would have to spend a year in Basic Training reading the manuals to play.

I am use to the games like, Battle-Field series, COD, MOH, and Sniper games, where you can jump in and start the action.
So I guess there will be a BIG learning curve for this Land lubber.

I read about the Silent Hunter Series, and found that SH 5 will work on Win 7. So I now have it.

I have a lot to learn about how to use it, and I see a ton of info from you all on this forum, which I will be studying.

Now for a long story longer:

I'm Al Nelson, better known as PaPaGrizz. 60+ years young. Spent 3 1/2 years, 22 days and 17 hours in a lovely country in Se Asia.

After that I went into the construction business and started a company, which I ran for 30 years. Then, the (deification hit the oscillating rota-tor) the Doc's said if I continue with what I'm doing, I'll end up in a wheel chair.

So I decided, I would work in sale, doing blueprint take offs, consulting, etc...

So now you might be thinking...Why the heck is messing with Sub-Sims?
Darn Good question! 12 November 2014, I suffered a major stoke, which the Doc's and everyone said: Yup it's time for his dirt nap... But Heck No!! I fooled them by being the ornery S.O.B I am and lived.
Again, Long story Longer.
I thing that playing a Sub Sim will help my feeble brain to keep working to get better.

So here I is!

Hello fellow skippers, looking forward to playing this game as i have always taken a fancy to war simulators (especially those that represent the WWII era) i've played ALOT of them through the years, too many to even remember. Although i do remember playing the whole series of Silent Hunter, my very first sub game was "silent service". Now with the Silent Hunter series it lets me either be a commander of a german uboat which actually tickles me pink or if i can find it i could also be a skipper in the pacific. I started playing Silent hunter 4 like a year or two ago and since then I got every silent hunter game I could get in steam. I love silent hunter series but it does have a lot of bugs (esp SH5) and that's where this awesome site comes in.

Just saying hello guys, good to be here. I am returning to SH5 after a long lay off, recently bought it on Steam then realized that for mods sake would have been better off buying the DVD so did that, oh well, no accounting for stupidity.

I am using the Wolves of Steel mod atm and am so impressed. It is a challenge for me but thats what I was seeking.

I have to say how impressive this community is, its freindly and constructive unlike many many other game forums out there. And the talents of the guys that have made this forum and the mods possible are exceptional. Really top quality stuff.

I am afraid that I am not in the same league as the vast majority of your contributers here but hope to maybe add the occasional positive post in the future.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good day. I was looking on YouTube Videos on Thursday and came across SH5. It was in my Amazon trolley before you could say Dive!

A long time player of simulators on maximum realism, but normally focused on flight (especially Falcon 4, Falcon SP, Falson AF, Falcon BMS - all the same sim just various mods).

I used to play 688i back in the day and many many many years ago tried to write a sub game in BASIC.

Looking forward to the learning curve of SH5. Although not looking forward to the bugs. My copy ETA is Monday so I am spending the weekend readin about the VII on various websites and peoples tips and tricks here.

Is there a better manual than the "back of a fag packet" couple of lines that come with the game.

Also any tips for a new skipper.

Live in New Zealand at the bottom of the world, Port Chalmers is my home town a little sea port near Dunedin.

Could not agree more. Only started playing this last week and having a blast. I am having problems getting the sextant working at the moment I want to take sights to navigate properly (although will use the navigator to do in most occasions).

Hello, my.name is Tommy. I am a 29 year old former pawn broker, medic, and journalist.

I've always liked Sims. From first attempting to play Flight Simulator 3.0 on a Tandy 1000, to playing my first sub simulator on a 386 (Silent Service 2, I believe)

I became a member on here playing Silent Hunter 3. I remember the hoopla about SH5, bought it nearly day one, and was extremely disappointed in it.

I took a long break, life happens, including one instance where a custom pc I built was shorted from a proximal lightning strike.

So recently, I finished another custom rig and put on SH5 and carefully installed TWOS, my oh my.

I'm studying for water treatment now, but occasionally I look at my flat screen tv and see my U boat chug slowly along in a stormy sea and smile as the music plays.

All is well again. :)

Hi everyone! My name is Thomas, 23 years old, currently working as IT Support.

I've been a fan of these games since playing Silent Hunter 1 on my dads old pc, barely being able to understand english, and just enjoying pressing the buttons!

I didn't start to fully enjoy the series until i bought silent hunter 3, though.
The game got way easier when you actually knew what was shown on screen!

Yesterday i decided to reinstall Silent Hunter 5, after a looong break, and i can't wait to play it again later today!

I'm so happy that these games are kept alive by you guys, it's really nice to see!

Not sure I am captain status yet, but with luck and lots of training I aspire to be one.. Hopefully with the mods and this game I can learn to be a great sub captain..

I will use the Wolf pack mod, but without real navigation at least for a bit till I get used to it all.. I will use manual TDC, though I guess with navigation turned on it will not be as realistic..

This is actually my third return. Not because I quit the game but because I had to dump my old machine due to getting a big dose of wine and upgraded to a desktop. Time elapsed and now I have SH5 reloaded and ready for more.

Took down my perioscope 8 years ago, due to the opposite sex, lame excuse yeas but it´s life. Figured I´ve earned enough pointes to load my SH5 (just have to find it ;) Got a nice birthday email and figured it is time to get back into the game. Was part of the Wolfsatwar roleplay pac with SH3 at that time but they do not seem to be active anymore. I'm Swede 53 living on the pack ice just under the artci circle. Still 3 weeks with ice left but when that is gone, at the sea is where you´ll find me. Have an old 30 feet sail boat in pine that is under renovation. Good to be back :)

PS. was looking around adn you guy have done a great work, hope it wount take me a PhD to get everything up and running but I´m really looking froward to get active again :) GMY DS.
