Ahoy there from a currently bitterly cold Suffolk, England.

Purchased my first subsim Silent Hunter Five when it first came out some years back and played it for a while but then gave up.

Being a big gamer I seem to have exhausted my games list recently and looked at my Uplay and I thought i'd give it another go. I've reinstalled it from scratch and was about to load it when it occured to me that there might be mods available now and googled upon this awesome forum.

I'm going to jump in the deep end (pun intended) and see if I can get it modded the way you've all have intended :o

Hi all, just thought I would say what's up to everyone and introduce myself.

I am from Scotland and have been playing SH3 since its release in 2005. Then went onto playing SH4. Only just got into SH5 again properly over the past few weeks when I final figured out how to mod it and keep the game working at the same time.

I forgot that I made the account of SUBSIM and when I finally remembered i again realised that the games really do still have a large community.

Just something i hope to happen in the future:

If they are to bring out more games for the SH series I hope that they have the mechanics of SH3 and also SH4, especially the UI and the walking around feature and the graphics, though i am sure they can be much better now, of SH5. No matter when it is set i am sure it will be great, perhaps a more modern one will put a spin on things and all will be well.

Hello everyone. Been on and off thses forums since SHIII. Last time on here 2012 and back to try SH5. I did have aplay around with it in 20!2 didn't like the basic game.
I'm from Manchester in UK, a board and video gamer. forever now it seems.
I have around 300 military type boardgames from ll era's. My latest two buys are both for solitaire play and are 'The Hunters' U-Boats in WWII and 'Silent Victory' same theme in Pacific theatre. both great fun.
I'm pushing the brain train nowadays as I've reached 80 years.
16 years in REME and since civvy life wworked as a signer and communicator for both Deaf @ DeafBlind people.
Avid packpacker complete with 2man tent and all trimmings, all over UK

Had a PC since early 1990s, played most sub sims on it. Perhaps Hunt for Red October was a favourite because I'm not sure I ever finished it and ended up in some mission loop. 688 Attack Sub was perhaps the first one I played.

A Brit but currently in Central America. We don't get many subs up our way, well maybe narco ones!

Hi all, I heard about subsim on steam and tho it looked like a good place to to check out, I'm 54 and live in Australia and enjoy military sims. After looking at the steam forums I decided to buy SH 3,4 & 5 as a package which should arrive in the post in the next 3-4 days. Which game would you recommend as the best in the series?, I found the steam forums to be a bit confusing, some saying that SH 5 was unplayable without mods etc, would appreciate any advice, cheers Ausprey

Hi all, I heard about subsim on steam ... Which game would you recommend as the best in the series?...

Depends upon what you want. Most of my time is spent in SH4 in the "Pacific Theatre", playing as a US skipper on a Fleet Boat. Lots of "deep" play time there (sorry, bad sub joke...). I've played with and like the Uboat campaign just fine in the v1.5 (which you may not have in the Steam package), but it is rather thin in "stock" form. While "outdated" from a graphics perspective (supposedly), if you like being a Uboat commander, SH3 is the way to go, especially if modded. However, I'm a recent SH5 purchaser (also via Steam), and it definitely has tweaked my curiosity more than a little. Again though, it's Uboat-centric. So of the 3, if you're after commanding a US Fleet boat, then SH4 is where I'd start. "Out-of-the-box", probably the easiest interface (for me) to get used to - but then SH3's interface is easy to navigate also, if you're after Uboats. SH5 is sort-of like an FPS, in that you have to walk all over the place, and the screen layout is quite a bit different from the others - and it almost *has* to be modded to be playable. All that said, next person will tell you something completely different - :lol: - welcome to the forum, Ausprey (and all the others)! :salute:

After a few years, I'm back with SH5 installed via bootcamp on a new Mac - my old one was struggling to run it and I lost interest.

Now I am trying to reassemble a decent mod list (old bootcamp partition was blown away long ago) but have come across the old download limit issues.

Hoping a post will help and nice to say hi to you all again. Off to try and download a stock OH2.5 mod that I found on a separate site to get me up and running quickly:

Hey guys,

I have been playing for a month.I am a bit of a history nerd. But, despite that I would generally disregard the Kriegsmarine's part in history. I picked up SH5 off of steam, found subsim and am now applying trig to a freaking videogame. This is a serious addiction. I'm applying stuff I learned about aircraft navigation. which I might add is not too surprising considering these techniques came from mariners; a much older trade.

Here I am buying books I probably never would have.

Been awhile here as well. R/L concerns as stated before although I am a LONG ways from retiring yet. Just had a few reconsiderations as the Winters grow longer and now am taking another look at some of my prior hobbies and evaluating their relative worth.

Or, in plain English I gave up smoking two years ago and drinking about a year and a half ago, lost 30 pounds and am re-evaluating my life choices as I cruise from middle aged to Senior status. I'd like to find time for subsimming as it was a great way to read while gaming and in fact if one was reading Padfield or somesuch it added greatly to the immersion and "feel" of the game.

Unfortunately I was never able to capture that feeling in stock SH5 so when the itch would come I'd try to decipher how to get a Steam copy of SH3 w/GWX working. Having less luck with that nowadays I'd usually just shelve it.

So now I shall try "modded" SH5 for which I shall make Onkel Neal a donation, and a hearty thanks to all those who helped to make this possible for all of us. Salut!

Warms the heart to see everyone still as helpful and good spirited here as I remember. Helps especially given all the riots we're having here in far-lefty sesesh-ville. I won't be baited by political sentiments and frankly they don't belong here anyways, but I will go so far as to say I find it humorous that California and(the Portland Area of)Oregon think they can secede from the Union.

Enough of that and back on target to say.....I'm currently sorting out SH5 with Wolves of Steel 1.06. Successfully sank a merchant and continued with patrol off coast of England. Made patrol grid, patrolled until contact with 5 ship small convoy which I proceeded to attack until I was in turn attacked by AC which damaged me enough to affect my ability to maintain proper trim due to flooding in the forward torpedo room. Lost the boat which became unmanageable and slammed into the bottom at about 40 meters or so with the loss of all hands. In hindsight, I tarried far too long on station surfaced attempting to close ship number 5 to be able to identify it and got caught out by a quickly scrambled response AC with not enough water under my keel to be able to crash dive effectively. Bad luck, greed and bad timing killed all those fine young men and a wiser Skipper would've bugged out sooner. I had the mission complete, just got greedy and pushed my luck too far.

So as far as immersion goes this gets pretty good marks in my book anyways and a heart-felt "well-done" to vdr1981 and all concerned. Quite a good bit harder and I really should have "appreciated" the tonnage I did get!

Ohoy fellow subbies!

My name is Captain Geir, and my organic organism I'm trapped in, was made in Norway. Since age of 6, after seeing Das Boot for the first time, I got insanely addicted to submarines. First subsim I could develope the addiction on was the game Silent Service I on Commodore 64 at about the age of 7-8. As any other relationships with something that really touches you inside, it wont wear off that easy.

At age of 12 I drawed my first submarine after best knowledge after studying Das Boot, and with good help from teachers at school, and other relative grown ups. With hydroplanes, ballasttanks, pipes, vents, etc. This was the absolute peak of my addiction, what could be considered a mix of fantacy psychosis and manic depression. This lasted about a half year. No sub build due to lack of funds, lack of RL orientation, lack of age. But! It was fun.

Since then it came to an halt due to other real life stuff after puberty age.

After 2005 discovering SHIII the love for submarines have flowered again, but in moderate way, and been playing since then.

Im 37 years old now, and I dont regret getting subdued in subs, specially in the VIIC sub, what is the most thoughest, best looking, most advanced sub during it's era.

(Calling it "addiction" since the thought of a sub was more or less a part of the brain at that time, just for getting the word right.)

Thanks for a good community over the years, and specially thanks for the devs for making solid mods and supermods like GWX 3.0, what made SH3 10 times better! :Kaleun_Applaud: Im sorry I cant contribute much other than actually sink as many ships as possible. Must be a couple of megatons now after all those years.

I am 56 and have been a keen player of simulators since I had my first Spectrum back in the eighties!
I live in Madrid and I am Spanish.
I am 2nd degree aeronautical engineer and thus my favourite sim is IL2 and all related WWII aircraft simulators
I love to fly and sail myself. I used to be a private pilot and sail a 15 m sailboat in the mediterranean sea,
I also love scuba diving
I had been playing SH3 a lot but I had left it aside and now I am trying to play SH5
To my surprise the Game is a total disaster. I would like someone to recommend me which mods are needed to recover at least SH3 standard
I have updated to 1.02 versión and installed The Dark Wraith 7.4.2 Mod.
I have found two bugs now after playing not too much.
I saved an historical misión I am playing (to recover the "touch") after hitting a 8000 ton cargo ship with a torpedo. She was happily burning and sailing at 7.5 kt after the hit and I fired a second torpedo. I was expecting, as it used to happen in SH3, that the draft should have been increased by the hit but it remained so my torpedo passed below without exploding.
Then I tried to load the game which I had saved after the first hit but now the merchant was sailing at 10,5 kt and no fire on board while I had minus one torpedo.

Back after a few years. Found the SH5 DVD in a closet I was cleaning and decided to give it another go. I remember the game being crap and nothing like SH3 GWX I was addicted to.

Installed it, my UPlay account was still active, with the last save being in March of 2011. LoL.

So I got the game up and running, ran stock for a few minutes to make sure it ran. Closed the game, and made my way to Subsim, first visit back in a few years!

Installed some very good mods, and enjoying this game as it should have been released back in 2010. Also playing on a very updated computer so I have all the graphic options set to its highest, and with vertical sync on, I am getting a rock solid 60 fps. This game, for being 6 years old, looks really good. IMO.

Anyway, thanks to all the modders who contribute to this game, SH5 and previous. Looking forward to diving deep into this sim this winter!

Interested in a starter rookie mod package but most mega packages ive seen are not for steam... any out there can point me in the direction of an easy guide in installing for steam and a list of available mods.. would prefer mega packages..

Its not mods that are a problem with Steam.
You cannot use the essential application TDW's Generic File Patcher unless you use the fix.

I again reinstalled, patched and followed instructions to the letter.. keeping accurate notes on what I did so as to allow me to better determine where I may have made a mistake.... I did not:<)

It all works as advertised. The Wolves of Steel is a work of art... now to learn ... or relearn how to play this sim to its fullest potential.

Interesting past 4 or 5 days. My pc sys was acting up badly. Hit an icon to start a program and ......... it would disappear. well I tried everything ......... more items went into the ether. I did not want to reinstall windows 10 and did not want to back everything up .... so hired a tech ,m........ who after 2 hours........... we need to reinstall a new copy of windows!#@!@3

Well I finally got windows 10 installed and finally got my 2nd hd recognized as :"E" again.

Problem... "SH5.exe" was one of the files that was sent to DDE ... I do not have a DDe:<)

Anyone know how to reinstall the sh5.exe file in folder? any help would be appreciated.

Hello, fellow Submariners. As you can propably tell, I am a new member of this forum. In fact i am entirely new to this genre. My name is Tobias, 27, Germany. And as it happens, I live in the exact City, where the last existing type VII boat is located. :)
I don't know why this happened, but a few months ago i wanted to play a subsim :))) I remember, back in my early youth, i played games like Wolfpack and Silent Service on my Amiga, but thats about it in terms of experience.
So i read much about SH5, and not much of it was good, but it still looked quite interesting. So, a few days later, i saw SH3-5 in a Shop for 7€, and instantly grabbed it. At first i was all satisfied with SH5, but of course you cannot bypass all these mitakes, and especially after i played a few hours of SH4, i realized what SH5 could have been. Beeing at 30m depth and 3 Destroyers constantly pinging at me and throwing depth charges for HOURS...and 1 hit with some tiny little damage...yeah. And in SH4 one destroyer bypasses me throws 3 charges and i instantly die. :D BUT THATS WHAT I WANT. I WANT SH5 TO BE LIKE SH4. Can you help me with that? Can someone give me some cool advices for mods. I don't want all graphical changes and optical tweaks, what i want most is the fix for the biggest bugs and a bit more realism in terms of danger. And i want to have better command options for my crew, like in SH4. It can't be possible that i have to go to my Radioguy and turn the Funkmess on everytime i surface. :D Thats not what Commanders should be doing, is it?
I also have seen that there are unbinded commands for the crew in the cfg,so it seems to be possible?! I would be very happy for any help and/or suggestions from some Veterans. :)

Well, here I go:

I'm a Belgian, living in Sweden since last year. I've always been a sucker for realistic combat flight study sims like Falcon BMS and DCS World.

Something weird happened to me in the past two weeks however, and I'm pretty much hooked to the sea now.

I've never played SH5 stock, so I'm not sure what the community has done to make it into this really great sim. But I'm very thankful nevertheless.
I'm really amazed by the immersion you get.

At first I convinced myself I'd play 100% realistic without even using time compression. Unfortunately, after my trip from Memel to Kiel, I realized I'd have to dump my family and job to be able to keep that up. :D
