Hi guys,
i want to say hi to everyone.
I come from germany but i live since 17 years on the canary islands, due to my passion for the sea and my hobbies in watersport and submarines.
My submarine hobby started early in school and kept on developing in every kind of subsims that came to my hands.
I'm 45 years and want to salut the developers of this amazing work the put into this sim. I always gave sh5 many, many chances, but as you know it was not always easy to play.
Not anymore!

Keep up the good work!

Hello people!

my name is Nitai and i'm 21 years old (i have the sneaking suspicion i'm on the younger side of this communtiy? i don't acctually know thougth..). i live in isreal and i'm finishing my mandatory service in 2 monthes. i'm installing silent hunter 5 wolves of steel again while i'm typing this and i'd love it if anybody wants to show me around in a co- op campaign(you will discover i have a capability of learning these type of things very quickly, and i have already learned a lot of the important stuff, but there's nothing like the guidance of an expirianced captian to get someone going). i got the game on uplay if that matters for the sake of that.

being compleatly honest you will probebly not see much of me on the forum, if you want to contact me the best way is throgth discord (Nitaihatr1#1306).

Happy hunting!

I dug out SH3 from a stash of old game-DVDs the other day and got immediately hooked again - even more so since I installed the "Living SH V15", too - great stuff !
This mod was what got me here in the first place, and seeing what great people are contributing here and the overall decent tone and manners, I decided to stick around.
I'm a 46 year old play-child from Dortmund in Germany, so the only real-world water I have before my doorstep is the beautiful river Ruhr, and I use to spend a lot of quality time with my girlfriend kayaking there, whenever weather would allow for it.
Right now, while I type these lines, it's Sunday, weather outside is outspokenly dreary, I'm having a good, locally brewed beer and I am searching through this forum, trying to find out, which mod I would need for SH5 ( with Twos), which I also installed after being re-infected with Silent Hunter, to finally enable my XO to identify ships for me.
So, I'm hoping to find my solution after all, have a good day everyone, prost (or skol/cheers) and have a good day !

Happy hunting !

Hi all,

My name is Pim, originally from the Netherlands, but the last 30 years living in the US, of which I am a proud citizen for the last 6 years.
New to the forum, but have played all SH versions. It has been a while since I played SH5, but I am a World of Warships player since Alpha weekend and am thorougly enjoying it.
The fact that soon(ish) we will be able to take subs in to battle and a conversation I recenlty had with forum member 'Kapitan' renewed my interest for SH5, and he also recommended me to become a member here!

So, I have been doing some digging and found the original Silent Hunter 5 Collectors Edition files from Ubisoft/Digital River that I bought for $39.99, as well as the licence key in an old email from January 8 2012!

My interest in ships is mainly due to my 12 years of service in the Royal Netherlands Navy, as well as a museum ships website and sidekick Facebook page, I have been running for nearly 5 years now.

So give me some time to find my sea-legs again in SH5, and than I want to know all about this 'Wolfpack' I keep reading about.

BZ to the staff of this forum, for I am one who still thinks it is the best form of social media to communicate with likeminded people.

Thanks, and as somebody once said: "I'll be back"

Cheers!
Pim

Hi

I've been a major military history buff since I could remember, but naval history (past about the mid 17th century anyway) just never really interested me.

I'd played other naval combat sims waaaaay back in the day, then I played Silent Hunter 2 and Destroyer Command. The tactics were a bit beyond my grasp back when I played them. I wasn't used to games where simple reflexes and arcade skill were next to useless, but it fired up my young imagination. Being in essentially a hollow torpedo designed to carry slightly smaller torpedoes while being shot at with torpedoes.... it seemed an utterly insane way to fight a war.

So anyway, long story short, naval history oddly still doesn't interest me very much. The psychology, tactics, and insanity/bravery of the sailors, those stuffed into little metal tubes and those walking on floating metal bullseyes.... that is what I find utterly fascinating.
And yes, I really, really suck at SH5. Worse than I did at SH2. There's obviously a lot of learning to do.

Howdy,

32, I live in the PNW, I have always been fascinated with WWII planes, vehicles and ships/subs. I never had the commitment or patience to learn previous sub sims, however, I have tried SH3 previously and just started to get into SH5. I have played Cold Waters, Wolfpack, SH3 and now SH5, sort of a lot for someone who never got particularly competent with sub sims!

I am happy to be learning as I go, however, I am finding I need to mod SH5 a bit, but I am loving the game.

Glad to have joined and enjoy browsing the forums and all the tutorials out there!

I'm a young Subsim skipper here who loves Silent Hunter 5,4, and 3!
I live in Indiana, USA. When I graduate High school (I'm a senior) and I turn 19, I'm gonna try and get a recommendation from the Senator to the US Naval Academy to be an officer in the Navy.
I like to write stories about WW2. Varying from pilots to a paratrooper in WW2 who is fighting in the battle of the bulge and then Submarine commanders. I'm a proud ladies man who is better at being friends with girls in my grade at my school than being their significant other, sadly :(.
I have a wide range of musical preferences from Billy Joel, Swing era, and old raps like 'Hey Ya!' performed by OutKast in 2003. Most of the kids in my school love rap, I cannot stand rap of the mid 2010s to the present day. I'm what I call a "Torpedo Head" or a guy who knows a lot about WW2.
I like war propaganda movies like "The battle of Midway" filmed by cameraman John Ford in 1942. I also love movies of that era, such as The Wizard of Oz (who wouldn't love that classic!) or Casablanca.
Other war movies like Midway and 1917 which just came out recently are personal favorites. I work with my grandfather on breaks to earn money for equipment and donating to Subsim!

Thats me.

I'm a long time lurker of subsim from Porto, Portugal. Made my first introduction on here in 2016.
But in reality I've been playing since the days of SH3, then SH4 and through SH5 all these years but never really "dived deep" into none of them. Just casual playing.
In these trying times we are living when a lot of us are self-quarantining and with a lot of free time on our hands I've decided to give SH5 another try and modded it with TWOS.
Now I'm hooked, amazingly different experience and I've been learning so much new stuff about WWII as a whole, U-Boats and real navigation, all the different ships, etc...
Of course I have a lot of questions and some of them have been answered here, reading through the threads or watching youtube videos about the subject.

I just wanted to say thanks to all of you who post here, you've contributed to make these days less trying for me and to keep me entertained and at times to conpletely get my mind of what we are living right now.

My name is Larry Halpin. A 74yo from the north coast of NSW, Australia. A military history lover from way back. Napoleonics mostly but WW2 Russian Front more recently. No interest in Naval until I came across, by accident, a solitaire board game called The Hunters. As I had downloaded a number of PC wargames (but played hardly any/none), I did a search & this game looked very attractive. A great price on Steam made it even more attractive.

So I watched a couple of videos & it looked really good but then noticed that the poster had added a multitude of mods (SH5). Then I started to look at the forums & it seems everybody has a multitude of mods included. Then I went to the latest forum pages & one mod, The Wolves of Steel, seems to be a one size fits all. But still other mods are also talked about plus a mod enhancer!

So what the hell do I do? How many mods do I need to get a fun game? Do I need any? Should I just scuttle my sub & invest in a Lancaster bomber?
HELP!

Hey all, I'm back after about 5 years of being out of the game. I'm an upgrading NFO in the Navy and there hasn't been much time for gaming.

Used to have SH5 from Ubisoft modded with Wolves of Steel installed but that was 2 motherboards/harddrives ago. Just went ahead and grabbed it for a few bucks off Steam.

Trying to get back into the game. I must admit, it's a little overwhelming due to the length of time this game has been out and the work everyone's put into it. Is getting TWoS installed and running the fastest way to get me playing again? Anything I need to look out for or just start with the Megamod thread? Thanks, all! :Kaleun_Salute:

Name: Ross
Age: 62

I grew up in the SF Bay Area. I have lived in about 6 different states but now call Minnesota home. I am a Marine Corps veteran, retired electronic engineer, amature astronomer, a writer and I play the bagpipes! Yes, I am a proud Scot and can trace lineage to about 4 Clans. I found Subsim with cryptic search: ‘sub simulators and forums’.

I served in the Marines as an avionics technician repairing communications, navigational aids, and radar for the A-6E, F-4J and A-4M aircraft. I used my GI Bill to get my degree and worked as a design engineer for about 38 years. I took retirement a few years back and I’m finally doing all the things I didn’t have time for when I was working.

I’ve always had a love of naval combat sims. I think my first was ‘Silent Service’ and ‘Task Force 1942’, Harpoon and I still play ‘Jane’s 688I’ and ‘Fast Attack’. Some of my other favorites are ‘Total War 2: Medieval’, the Close Combat series and the Wargame series.

I have done a considerable amount of sailing. In the early ‘80s, I started the course work to get my sailing master license. I took the Coast Guard Auxiliary inland waterway navigation, dead reckoning and navigation courses. Though I finished the required classroom and field work, I never took the final exam. I loved the courses and learning to read charts using the tools and especially the sextant. My dad and I sailed from SF bay to LA on a 35ft Yawl and I navigated. We made it without falling off the edge of the world! I have salt in my blood and I think I come by it honestly. My father retired a Senior Chief Machinist Mate and always considered himself Destroyer Sailor. He had some interesting tails of playing cat and mouse with Soviet subs in the 50s and 60’s!:Kaleun_Cheers:

Right now I’m in deep with SH5. I really like the immersion factor and all the other intricate details. One of the hot topics in the forums is realism. I’ve started a routine that really brings the sims to life: I write bios on all my captains. I’ve been a writer for years and right now, mostly short stories. I found that my personal, after action reports and patrol logs were getting rather large so I decided to start saving them as RTF docs. Writing a bio just kind of happened. I composed bios for all my captains now. Maybe I can start collections of stories for some interesting reading!

I’m glad I found this community for the fellowship and wealth of knowledge and experience offered! :Kaleun_Salute:

I have been around SH titles since 96 even though at the time I had no idea what I was doing. Played them all until I bought SH5 day one and was extremely disappointed...After a 10 year hiatus (more or less lurking in the depths of the forum too) I have decided to re-surface the boat and fortunately found TWoS for it...been enjoying it for a while now.

My name is: Heđin, born and raised in the Faroe Islands🇫🇴, where I still live with my family.
I started with Silent Hunter in 1996, 17 years old and I was hooked, but didn’t go for 2,3,4, or 5 because I got kids and there really was no time.
Anyway now I got going with sh5 wos real navigation, and I am total crap at it, but havin alot of fun with it👏👏

hello everyone :)

I'm 33 years old, Born and Raised in Australia Brisbane, I have always been intrigued by U-boats from a young age, their engineering has always astounded me, growing up there was not many documentaries on U-boats but the books I read only made me more intrigued to learn more about the boats themselves and the men that sailed them, with sh5 and twos I can finally get a glimpse of that it was really like on a u-boat, would first like to thank the creator of TWOS Mod and the mod developers of the mods in TWOS absolutely brilliant.

my fav is still Silent Service 1 and 2, I remember finding it on an old amiga PC that belonged to my dad, having to use the game booklet to access the game through paragraphs and ship recognition, I believe I must have been around 7 years old at the time, remember spending countless hours trying to learn how to play it, at the time, I had no idea what submarines or U-boats were.

I continued to play silent service into my teens, I had no idea silent hunter 2 was a thing. at this point around 2004 2005, the internet era had arrived, I was at a friend's house, browsing this so-called internet sorcery I still only had an amiga pc at home .this is when I saw silent hunter 3 was about to be released.

I begged my parents for a new pc, after mowing lawns and doing house jobs for 6 months my dad finally bought me a new pc with a copy of SH3.

it was mind-blowing, I had never had 3d graphics, I would never trade this memory for the world, I spent many many school nights playing it till 4 am to zero sleep at all and acting like I was asleep when mum and dad would wake me up for school haha

so thank you guys very much for keeping the silent series alive, I play a lot of sh5 these days thanks to TWOS. :Kaleun_Cheers:

Hello everyone,

Born & Raised on coast of Louisiana here in U.S..... Currently live in country called Bayou Chicot area. I spent 10 years on U.S Navy Submarines. I served Five years on USS Woodrow Wilson SSBN-624 Gold Crew in Charleston. S.C as a Machinist Mate ( A-Ganger ) from beginning of 1980 till end of 1984 and boat I qualified Submarines on having achieved 10 Submarine Patrols total. I then did my last 5 years in Navy stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii as a supervisor for the Submarine Repair Facility over all the outside machine shops.

I Decided to get out of Navy after 10 years & attended The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center ( FLETC ) in Glynco, Ga. & after 25 years retired on New Years Eve 2014.

Anyway being retired I get bored especially at night so I play games on the PC, Mostly SH 3, SH 4 & SH 5 which my daughter & Son gifted me last Christmas as a present.

I been meaning to join Subsim for a long time but never got around to it till now. Appears to be an awesome forum of people who love Submarines & Submarine games as much as I do.

This is part two of the SH5 players, Introduce yourself: roll call thread. For part I, click here. (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=162825)

We have a thread in the GT forum where people introduce themselves, post a pic and a little bio. I'm starting one here, because nothing helps a community more than openess and friendship. So, come on into the room, take off your hat, and put your boots on the table.

Most of you know me by now, but in short, I'm a native Texan, 50, located in Houston, and I like long walks in the moonlight. Have to consider myself a fan of Theodore Dreiser, Bruce Springsteen, and Wolf Peterson. Motorcycle rider since forever! Been playing computer games off and on since 1979. Blue Max was my first simulation.

Hello all. SH3 player from a few years ago. i have started again and have just started playing SH5. Retired US Navy Chief Petty Officer. looking forward to learning much from you guys.

Good Morning Everyone
How are we all?

I have been stowing away in the stern Tubes ever since I joined in 2017, mainly downloading different mods and going on patrols whenever I have the time or not playing a different game.

My names Pripyat12, A 23 year old Australian volunteer in the Digital Scanning Unit at a local town museum.

For anyone who does not know what digital scanning is, we convert old Photographs to a digital image like .JPG etc etc in an effort to preserve them.

Also a bit of an amateur historian with a passion for studying the Chernobyl Disaster that happened back in 1986.

I started playing the Silent Hunter series with SH2 back when I was really young then progressed to SH3,SH4 and finally SH5.

Its heart-warming to see SUBSIM is still going strong for so many years.

Without a doubt the best community on the Internet!!.

Hope you all have a great day and good hunting Kaleuns!

Hi everyone! I am a submarine officer from the naval capital of Russia, St. Petersburg.

I have been working a lot on astronomy in Silent Hunter 5 TWoS lately and overlooked this thread. Now that my work is mostly completed, I will take this opportunity to invite to my YT channel (link in my signature) those who are interested in celestial navigation in SH5 and are not yet familiar with my work.

In 4 hours of video tutorials, I summarized the experience of 4 years of my research on celestial navigation in Silent Hunter 5, thanks to which it is now possible to determine the u-boat position by the sun and 58 navigational stars using Kriegsmarine "F-Tafel" tables. You will learn how to do this from my video tutorials.

Best wishes Alpheratz.

Hello from from the submarine capital of Canada, Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. Just getting back into subsims with Uboat and now Wolves of Steel for Silent Hunter 5. Still getting the hang of targetting. Tried my first attack on two ships simultaneously and watched both torpedoes go completely off track because I put the angle on bow to port instead of starboard.

Thanks to everyone for all the hard work on the mods. Having a blast.

I just bought SH5 on the recent Steam sale. I read that it was only really good once modded. When all of my searches for good mods seemed to come back to Subsim, I figured I would join to check it out. Looks like you have a nice community here. Using information I found on the forums,I went ahead and also installed TWOS last night. I've not played at all yet, but I've seen some videos of the game and am looking forward to my first run.

I am a newbie (67 LOL) to Submarine Sims ....
when I was a child (and still do) I used to Love OLD B/W Submarine WWII movies! "Stick me on an Island" with one movie it would be
"Run Silent Run Deep"
SH5 has a Steep learning curve, and after 40 "hours in" I still cannot manage Torpedo loading/firing so I plan to spend some time in the Welcome tutorial section!
The absolute Beauty of the Sim for Me is just riding around in the BOAT! The detail is incredible and I still like walking AFT just to look at the Engines running!
Maybe after 80 hours-in I might be able to SINK SUMPTHIN'
After playing this sim I probably will not boot-up SH3 or Crash Dive 2 again.
What I would like to see?
You could hook-up with a Supply Ship and get more Torpedoes!

Hi, been out for a while last playing GXW, (1 and 2 before that). Starting this time with 5 TWOS. Install went well, man playing Silent Hunter, its like you have to go through install hell to prove you deserve to play. But when its running all modded up isn't she a beauty. First impression of TWOS is about same as my first impression of GWX, wow what an amount of work you guys put in, hats off. The tutorials on TWOS are fantastic for just getting feel of the controls again. I was blown away by the tut on 4 bearing method, I never even tried that before awsome.:arrgh!:

PS forgot to ask How do you take a screenshot in TWOS and where in the ocean do they go I cant find them.

Well, Ive been silent running for quite some time but I have found my way back to base. I go back to the SH3 days and its good to see a lot of the Old Guard still around. Used to go by the handle Deimos if any of you old timers still remember back that far. I fired up the old girl and reinstalled SH5 the other day with TWoS mod (fantastic job on that BTW) and having fun relearning the ropes.

Ive also been playing Uboat in early access and that one is really coming around but the old SH5 just has that emersion. Anyway, its good to be back.
