Hello Kaleuns,

a german grey wolf (literally) reporting back to duty again.
I'm returning back to SH5 once a year or two, usually in winter time (immersion). I guess I'm hooked since watching "Das Boot" with my father at cinema and playing Silent Service on my C64. Probably my grandfather, who served on a WWII minesweeper, was the one who sparked my interest.

Now enjoying TWOS, trying to play with a "dead is dead" approach (hope this makes sense). I really want to thank every modder and helper in the susbsim community for your outstanding work ! You guys rock !

2443More of a revisit really, I was a Subsim member years ago but lost track of my login info after a long layoff from sub driving and getting myself a new PC.
The rig was a 65th birthday present to myself last year when I officially became fully retired.
Spent most of my working life as a maintenance engineer, first with TVs and then computers (mostly mainframe stuff).
Been simming for many a year, I think the earliest sub game I remember was something for the Spectrum many many years ago.
Followed the Silent Hunter franchise right from the beginning, and I was sad to see it end, especially as SH5 was so bad out of the box.
But now the modding community have made it into what it should have been from the start and I've gotten the bug again to get out to sea.....

PS. Picture is quite old from my folk band days. Still play but just casually these days....still got the beard, but it's now grey!

Hey, just wanted to say "Hi!" and thanks to everyone who contributes to this board with mods and tutorials. I have been a casual sub-simmer going back to Silent Service II in college, then Aces of the Deep, Janes Attack Sub and the Silent Hunter Series. I just started getting into SH5 and trying to up my game with manual targeting (well, manual in that I set up all the TDC stuff, at least!) So thank you to all the tutorials that have helped as well as to all the modders on Wolves of the Pacific that made this game work!
Here's a video of my second successful torpedo attack, where I managed to forget which direction to use the protractor from to get the AOB, so I just estimated and was close enough to make it work anyway.

I'm 36 years old - a general physician from Denmark- with a life long, deep interest in history and wwII in particular. Especially the war at sea! The U-boat Campaign stands out for me as THE most interesting part of it all!
After reading the "Silent Victory" book by Clay Blair (and playing modded SH4, of course) - the submarine war in the Pacific, is also incredibly fascinating!

I am from Spain, 43, and for a long time owner of SH5, which I played very little because the game was, well, meeee... for my tastes in their original state. Then, one day, a little more than a year ago, learnt of WoS megamod, and tried it... as a former naval industry worker (competition yachts) and soldier that ended in the army but for some time expected to go to the Spanish Armada, I really appreciated some of the realism details that WoS added, and found the game really interesting in that state. Now, after transiting to WoS 2.1, I restarted the play, and come here to say Hallo!! to my peer Kaleune...

I just wanted to introduce myself. I have been "simming" since the golden era of the C64 and Microprose, playing classics including Silent Service 1 & 2, Red Storm Rising, Pirates, Flight Simulator 2 (SubLogic) and F-19 Stealth Fighter, just to name a few. Now I'm into Flacon4 BMS, DCS, Xplane 11, IL2ClOD, the Silent Hunter series, and I even get into Elite Dangerous every now and then. I also play CodWW2, Star Wars BF2, BF1 and Tomb Raider on Xbox1X.

I my username suggests, I was a Midshipman in the RAN for nearly a year commencing pilot (Birdy!) training until the MedicO's wielded the mighty axe. I transferred over to the RAAF as a military Air Traffic Control Officer where I reached the lofty heights :03: of senior FLTLT during an 8 year career. I then transitioned to civilian ATC which I have been doing for the last 8 years.

I purchased SH4 (retail DVD) about 5 years ago played the vanilla/stock version and enjoyed it. I'm now keen to look at playing a super mod version to see the vast improvements and appreciate the time and effort people put into these old classics to keep them going.

I purchased the SH5 box from Amazon (It came in a pack with Il2CloD and Wings over Europe) about 3 years ago and have never installed it as yet due to the bad press it received. However, looking through the forums it appears there are some awesome mods out for it which I would like to try. I just have a feeling though that it will be a Steam version that installs which appears far harder to mod with that TDW generic patch (when I installed Il2CloD it went straight to a Steam version even from the retail DVD), but I'll give it a try, as I would really like to play the Wolves of Steel mod, although I'm not too computer savvy. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone. My name is Peter and reinstalled SH5 and playing with TWOS. I'm a retired truck driver and back in the 80s was with the Canadian navy. A couple of questions. Playing this fantastic mod, I managed to finish Scapa Flow and I think Eastern Coastal and I'm presently heading to Northwestern approaches. When I exit the game, shows the missions that I've finished and still ongoing. I think I finished eastern coastal waters but, still shows ongoing? Good morning all, just a quick hello and thanks to the community here for such a great forum, without it I'd be somewhat lost.
My Father was in sub's in the RN before he spent the rest of his career in the MN in container shipping. For myself, I loved boats but going to war in one was out the question, so I joined the army and served as a para!
Just returned to the SH series after a long absence. I started in SH1, still remember the daunting experience of being in a tiny sub with the Japanese invasion force heading south on day 1.
Currently trying to get my head around TWOS in SH5. Looks great, guess I'll be hiding from the heat this summer in a dark room...when the wife is out lol.
Dreaming on an SH6....

CAJ reporting for duty! When SH5 SH4 SH3 came out I became hooked Its a love-hate thing because there is so much to learn. SH series has me continually kept on edge and now play SH5 with TWOS, it's like a whole new game re-hashed. I love the simulation. I love the sea EXUS navy spent a lot of days at sea aboard the USS Kitty hawk Cv63 &USS Carl Vinson Cva 70. I can just glare at my SH5 uboats conning tower and watch the simulated seas roll on, reminds me of MY US Navy days

I visited The Western Approaches Museum in Liverpool recently, then on the back of that read Iron Coffins (in one sitting). I found both very compelling, so here I am now!

I've never played a subsim before but am looking forward to it (and slightly worried that I'm not going to be getting much done around the house for the next few days...maybe weeks.... even months!!!)

I am an old dog with no sea legs and have just been assigned to my first command (SH5) via amazon being a old dog in new boots I am bound to mystified by the technical aspects of my command, so hopefully you will not tell me to RTFM too much.
I've started but yet to complete a mission, but hopefully with your help I will stay on track and progress to a level of if not competence to a level at least where I can with confidence stop the population of Great Britain from getting their ration of Bully Beef from South America.


I have other boots by the way, these are quite scuffed and I use them when flying DCS, finally I hope to add to your membership and in time become valued if not for technical help but for general moral.

55 year old landlocked truck driver finally able to play over the road.

I'd used to play 9 or 10 years ago but had to put it aside...just wasn't practical on a truck. But now I've found a system that works and makes it injoyable to play again.

I've forgotten most of what I'd learned back then so expect many stupid questions and fill free to demote me to fish bait firstclass.
But mostly I'd want to say thanks to everyone for making these games so much better.

I am a little forward in my mission since last post, and at this moment am in the middle of the north sea headed towards the enemy
( shhhh keep that under your hat, walls have ears ) .

As per the email I will add to my first post with a little about myself and my interests, used to play in a band ( several) just local pub n club but not played live for years, still have a lot of gear but sadly it only gathers dust,

I work as a tech at the Uni, have done for the last 20 odd years, hopefully I want to jump ship in the next couple of years, the older I get and the more I hear about so and so shoving his mortal coil early sixty's the more I want to take early retirement.
I like many of my age group like books, tend not to watch too much TV and spend the time away from that at night on the PC, doing flight sims(DCS) and I ashamedly admit you tubing LoL Cats and Dogs ( funny don't have a pet)

Can't think of much else at the moment that's remotely interesting to say so I will sign off for now.

Never made time to do this when I joined the forum, so here's my story :
Bought SH5 on cd when it was released, but it didn't last long and ended somewhere collecting dust. Stumbled on the latest improvements and mods and gonna give it another run. Great to see that even after all those years you're still around...


Now the boring part, I'm a technical manager from Belgium, been put on early retirement because they decided to close down the doors at the factory where I have been working for the last 40 years.


Been on computers since the very first ones ever where available for the public. Like to see what's possible and what's not with them. Like to go for some carp fishing once in awhile. Into RC-Models (also submarines) and had my part in Car Tuning scene. Plenty of things done in the past...


Anyway, if anybody needs some advice, help or what ever... give a yell.

Greetings! I played SH2 on Win95 laptop and had a blast. Joined Subsim and had a blast! Then real life intruded on my fantasies, got a good job and a dear wife who I still have BTW. Silent hunter became a fond memory of mine. I could remember all of the glitches and frustrating moments in that version but the fun was outstanding and made it all worth while.

Finally I bit the bullet and bought SH3 for WinXP I believe :hmmm: I could not remember my login and password for Subsim so I created a new account in 2015. Needless to say I had a blast all over again. Then darn it real life plagued me again! :doh: I hate when that happens.

About a month ago I was reading the Subsim Forums about SH5 and the game bug bit me again! :subsim: I bought the simulation on DVD and after it arrived I installed it, anticipating even more fun but I couldn't get it working. I pleaded with THEBERBSTER to assist me, his encouragement & ideas helped to keep my hopes up and last night all the trials and tribulations paid off!

I will be setting sail once again soon, I just need to learn the games keyboard shortcuts again and get the Wolves of Steel mega mod installed. I can't wait to visualize the crowds cheering as I and my crew set off to new adventures during WW2 in the Atlantic Ocean.

Thanks all for the warm welcome. I have the Steam version and it works fine, but I am reading up on how to perform the patching and adding key mods. I have seen several YouTube videos on this sim and it looks great. Looking forward to finishing my first campaign.

Hi, not new to Silent Hunter or SubSim forums but new to SH5 so here I am introducing myself. A while ago I played through a campaign on SH3 which didn't end well for me and my crew (RIP) once the enemy started getting good at detecting me, I was playing with the LSH megamod which I enjoyed very much, started again with the GWX mod but didn't get very far (also the game crashed occasionally which was frustrating). I picked up Silent Hunter 4 on DVD from a charity shop but haven't played it yet, had a bit of SH fatigue.



After a bit of a break from SH I've just now picked up Silent Hunter 5 on DVD from a charity shop (50p!), hoping to patch away the 'always online' DRM and improve the game in all sorts of ways from the get-go before I start playing, so will be reading the 'get started' threads here. I already have a Ubisoft account which I used for The Division.


Would be really good if I can get my head around manual targeting solutions and such, watched an excellent YouTube video on the subject but most of it still went over my head, the guy made it look so easy. Guess I wouldn't have passed the Commander's exam back in the day! :arrgh!:

Sniper to start off you should only consider TWoS mod as a starting point. Once you have mastered that mod you can look about for something else that suits your mode of play.

Hello everyone,

I´m 28 years old and from southern Germany. I Played a lot of Silent Hunter 1, 2 and 3 many years ago without Mods. In the last few days i wanted to play Silent Hunter 3 again, first time with a Mod namely LSH3. But i am frustrated becaus of many CTD´s after 3 or 4 hour patrols. (no critic!)

I noticed that i have Silent Hunter 5 in my UBISOFT Account. Now i want to play it to the first time and Mod it. I looking forward for more stability.

Hello from SFO, CA. I think SH5 is one of the better games once modded. There should be a SH6 that does the more modern submarine warfare; like the modern Diesel/Electric Subs and the Nuclear ones. I am into Civil Aviation in real life and have a penchant towards most simulators tilled to their most realistic settings.

On current SH5 patrol - Arctic Convoy - Distant Covers and I am totally sucking at it coz I am not able to spot even a single BB or a carrier. Actually I did sink a carrier earlier in the Arctic Convoy campaign but that didn't count towards my mission. And now I am just floating around like a moron looking for only those ships that'll count. I am bored sinking convoys already. :haha:

Who needs SH6 when we have TWoS. Ubisoft could never produce anything as good as this.

I'm a 57 year old former professional musician/radio presenter and long time sim fan (starting in 1982 with Psion flight sim on Spectrum)
I've only just moved to SH5 from SH3 (I bypassed SH4 although I DO have it.
After DAYS of pulling out my hair, trying to make the Steam version of SH5 work with mods (patch this, open this data file, install cabinet file viewer, edit this, etc. STOP!!!!) I have found a DVD copy of SH5 for sale and it is on its way as I type this.
The main reason for my writing in this, is to thank all of the modders, paint jobbers and those who contribute to these Sims. I'm always knocked out by the dedication of you guys and to find people who share my passion for these sims is a complete joy. I hope that buying the proper version of Sh5, I'll soon be able to join in properly.

I have found a DVD copy of SH5 for sale and it is on its way as I type this. You will not be able to use this dvd unless you purchase a new DVD key.
All SH5 discs are locked to the original user in Uplay.

Your SH5 STEAM download is compatible with the TWoS mega mod which contains a STEAM conversion as part of the installation process.

Good morning all

Not new here by any stretch of the imagination, but i am a long time Dangerous Waters driver and SHIII and IV player i also do have limited experience in SH5 which i have been playing on and off since its release.

I have never managed to get all the way through which really bugs me i get as far as 1940 and that's it i cant go no further and i have failed the missions anyway because i couldn't get the tonnage, i mean how can you? i do play with nearly full realism on so its difficult at best and with the depth not keeping steady is a pain too.

After spending many years playing SH III GWX, I purchased SH V and played the stock version, never truly being able to immerse myself in V as I did III.

Well, seeing game play on YouTube the bug stuck again and I'm playing stock to get a feel for the controls as well as wanting to play, I am back.

Ultimately, I hope to get TWoS up and running but my first two attempts have resulted in CTD. GRR. That was the issue that I had playing the modded version the first go around.

I see many tagged posts about installing TWoS and apparently am not smart enough to figure them all out.

Wondering how it is possible to complete the British Coastal Waters Patrol XX area without any official "patrol grid" map in the stock game. Interesting that they included that mission but not a grid map. Always confused me.

Anyway. Back to the patrol.

This is a great community and I want to thank the modders and those that have provided a wealth of info for us players. Without you, I wouldn't be playing Silent Hunter.

I'm 63 and live in Florida, A LONG time ago I worked on 688s and Tridents at Electric Boat in Groton, CT. Now I'm a Real Estate agent - not retired yet.

I've been playing sub sims since Red Storm Rising on a C64 back in the 80's. I recently reinstalled SH3 and SH5, and have been having a ball.

Due to life, kids, work etc, I haven't been able to spend much time with the silent hunter series.

within the last few months, I have re-installed silent hunter 5 after happening upon the twos mod, and wow, what a game changer it has been :)

my work does take up a huge amount of my time, but I am truly enjoying SH5 now and the effort these incredibly talented modders have put into the sim to make it as enjoyable as possible.

I don’t think I ever did one of these where I introduced myself. My name is Bstanko6. Currently a patrolman in Illinois. My subscription says I started in 2015, but I’ve actually been on subsim even earlier than that. I Love the Silent Hunter series I Love all submarine games, and have played most of them. I am a 100% immersive player, so I’m the nerd with the red lamp next to my desk when I play this game at night. I have played in virtual flotillas, used to be in DEF. I love making tutorial videos for SH, and I am willing to help anyone who wants to learn. I know a lot of the guys already know who I am, but for the new guys I hope we can get together and play this game and learn more about it together sharing stories and methods of attack! The guys who run this show know their stuff, and I appreciate all of them for a website I can call my own. This is my club and my mates! Long live Subsim.

Well G'Day everyone and thank you for having me on this site.
Now NO i am not a Pc guru I am a Paramedic and as such I love my sim games, so if it is an aircraft sim, driving sim, Train sim, or in this case sub sim, all of my games are on steam and yes before you all jump up and down on me.
I have read lots about how to install some of the mods.
But no where can I see where it tells me if the mod is steam compatible? so I would love to install some, but most of them say Not Steam usable. I did try and Install the TWOS but it did not work and had to uninstall the game back to steam.
Question
what version is the steam game does anyone know??
is TWOS Steam compatible??

is TWOS Steam compatible?? Yes.

There are many STEAM players who have successfully installed TWoS,in theory there is no reason why you could not become one as well.
Very important that all parts of the installation are carefully understood.

Subsim is great, haven't found a nicer community for any game, also, the number of mods and modders out here is amazing, thank you for what you do, you make this game so much better!

Trying to read the how to's here but it is like a huge mine field...
I ordered the SH5 Gold addition from Kinguin and downloaded it thru the Ubisoft-uplay.

everything (uplay and SH5) Downloaded under 1 folder and I have seen the DAM Trailer load up with out sound mind you about 12 times but still can not get the basic game to run on Win 10.(all I get when launching is the trailer w/ no sound in upper 3/4 of my screen then nothing)

Any way I will be happy to finally get this to work(posted in SH5 gereral for some direction)

Hey AP, I think I know you. :P

Had the same problem trying to get this up and running a few days ago and after much trouble found a solution:

Go the the sh5.exe in your install folder and right click. Select properties and go the to compatibility tab [while here you might as well check "Run this program as administrator" under Settings]. At the bottom of settings under the compatibility tab there should be a button for "Change high DPI settings". Select this then check "Override high DPI scaling behavior. Scaling performed by: Application."

That let me get the stock game running, then installing the TWOS mod was no issue.

Just wanted to drop by and say hello. Playing SH4, SH5 and now wolfpack all at the same time. Have to get my subsim fix I guess. One question, I have the steam version of SH5 and would like to know what mega mods and anything else to make it better. At this point SH4 still takes all over SH5. But, I know SH5 has it in her, the graphics are amazing!

Hey all! I'm new to the sub simulation scene. I'm 24, married, and originally from the states. Currently, I'm in Germany. (I know, pretty ironic that SH5 is what led me here) Already donated to keep this fantastic community around! I have read through some of the forums already looking for mods and tips. Let me just say that you are all a fantastic group! I'm looking to get into Wolfpack and Uboat (when it releases on the 30th!!!) but, I'm currently learning my way around a sub playing SH5 using the Wolves of Steel mod with all realistic settings. im totaly new to that kind of games. I managed to do my first exploration in SH5. Grounded the U-Boat and had to learn a lot. Now im able to get to some locations and can dive without hitting the ground :doh:
Seems like a promising beginning with TWoS-Mod :yep:

HI all, I'm a 71yr old widower living in Bunbury Western Australia. I have Sh3,4 and 5 on my computer. I like to change from one to the other, this can be confusing sometimes as the format is not the same. At the moment I'm on Sh 5 and I'm not getting the credits for sinking the allotted tonnage for the British coastal waters or the western approaches. Can anyone put this old fart in the right direction? I enjoy the games as they stimulate the brain and fingers. A must at my age to help keep dementia away. Keep up the good work, shipmates. bigted
