View Full Version : "Smoke on the Horizon" ad nauseum!

I wish that somebody could tell me how to stop the Watch telling me there is "Smoke on the Horizon, bearing xxx" every 30 seconds for the entire time you are trying to overhaul a convoy.:dead:

Twice in this current mission, it has been too dark to commence an attack so I've had to tail the convoy and then get into position for a dawn shot. The whole time the Watch repeating about "Smoke on the horizon" ad nauseum.

I usually mute the voices in the player options, but then you get nothing about other warnings like "Escort sighted!". Idealy reporting the initial contact and then reporting when the contact was lost would be great.

I wouldn't want to remove or replace the sound files as with the "Shallow Waters" annoyance.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try this...
Open main.cfg file (documents/SH/cfg/main.cfg) and change marked value to higher number, 32 or 64 for example...

[TIME COMPRESSION]
; The first value is the default one, the second value is used when 'travel mode' is activated.
; The two values should be separated by a comma.
; If only one value is specified, that value is used for both default and travel mode.
TimeStop=0
RealTime=1
LandProximity=1,256
CriticalDamage=1,256
CrewEfficiency=128
AirEnemyDetected=1
SoundEffects=2
CharacterAnim=32
FriendDetected=1
EnemyDetected=1
RadioReport=256
Particles=32
PrayState=1
HunterState=1
3DRender=512
Maximum=512

Thanks for the reply vdr1981.

I'll change that values and give it a go.

Makes you think that when programmers are developing these games, they never actually play them.

No one in their right mind could sit and listen to that voice repeating the same thing every 30 seconds for hours on end without wanting to throw their PC out the window!!:wah:

Hi Kev

It sounds like it might be a sound mod compatibility issue.

I have never had this problem with SH5.

You could check this by making a mep file of your enabled mods.

Cut and paste your sound mods from the mep file to a safe place.

Make sure you save the mep file correctly.

Load the amended mep file and go back to your game play.

This should not be a problem as SH handles sound mods differently to the usual mod types.

If this cures the problem then add your sound mods back one by one testing each time.

It may just be that the sound mods are ok but one needs to be repositioned to work properly.

G'day THEBERBSTER,

I am using the English version of SH5 with German voices installed from the CD.

The only sound mods I have installed are: DynEnv v2.9 - 12 Sounds, MadMaxs_SH5_Subdiesel (mono) v2, Wasserbomben and DBSM_Music_1_0_4.

I'm not sure these mods would have any effect on the contact repetitions. I have modified the main.cfg file as per vdr1981's suggestion but have yet to find another contact to see if this reduces the repetition rate.

Here's hoping..........Regards, Kev

I remember this being an issue with SH3 as well. Though somehow foggy (it's been a long time since i haven't played it) I kinda recollect it was something related to the way sensors lose and reacquire a target. I seem to recollect that i solved it (in SH3) by changing a parameter in the turning radius line (or something like that) of the sensor file. Might be a similar issue.

Hope this bit of a hint will help.:)

Hi Kev

Quote > I am using the English version of SH5 with German voices installed from the CD.

Can you tell me why you use the English version with a German speaking crew?

Logically you would use the German version.

I use the German version and I still get “We have a message from the BDU” in English spoken.

You need to run the JSGME Mod Validator and look at the 1st and 3rd parts.

Part 1 shows the mods enabled and whether installed correctly

Part 2 shows you the conflicting mods and which files.

See my tutorial Post #28 if you have not used it before.
