It seem they discovered a species of mushrooms in the Amazon that is able to digest polyurethane. And they're edible.
So mushrooms eat plastic, we eat mushrooms, now we only need to close the circle by making plastic out of poop

Plastic has the same components as sugar or fat, so it's plausable that the mushrooms completely re-arange the C H and O in the plastic. If it only ingests it, then they really haven't done anything.
